View Full Version : Shooting points
BrassEye 03-06-2003, 05:03 PM When modeling, after a while moving points smoothly around become impossible because they seem to be locked on an invisable grid or shoot off in many directions.
What am i doing wrong or is another of max's great 'features' that it seems to have many of? :annoyed:
btw running max 5.1 on win xp with geforce4

sounds like you've got Grid Snap on, check your help files and you'll find out how to turn it off.

Thats what i thought, but it turned out that it was tiny! Resizing it fixed that problem.
But now when i apply a symmetry modifier it is massive, ruining the join. Why? Can anybody help?

If you post a screenshot of your prob I'm sure someone here will be able to help :)

i get that problem sometimes, have a look at the grid scale, (just next to the time line) next to it there is the counters for x , y & z when you move a vertex watch these counters they may be going up to 10's of thousands. The only way i found to fix this problem was to move the view around a bit so that im looking at the vertex from a slightly different angle. I know it sounds weird but it worked for me.
if you need screen shots i can post some.

i had this same problem. i would try and move a vert after a while and it would not go past its original position on the mesh in a certain direction.
i restarted max and it was fine, it only happened when i went to 5.1. if ur problem is different then i dunno, but it may just be a another bug.

Hi, thanks for the replies, even though my posts were incredibly vague!
What happened was that points weren't moving around properly. When I attempted to move a point this happened:

However I managed to work out that the object was incredibly TINY!. It had shrunk. However scaling it up had no effect in its home scene, even large I couldn't even move the points.
Thus I imported it out, restarted max and brought him back in and scaled him up using a box as a guide. Thus the points started behaving normally again. Hurrah! Only now, when I applied a Symmentry modifer to continue, this happened:

:shame:
The gizmo was all currupt.
When I uncheck weld seam it appears normal but now there is the join down the front of the head. Can anyone help?
Ill quit moaning now and try some of your tips. Cheers!
