Anyone know what resolution film quality or near film quality texture maps are? I keep trying to make as detailed a texture as possible for something simple just to see what quality I can get and all I end up with is a model that either looks like it was painted with a busted crayon or a bad felt marker! I'm going for the quality of textures like in the Ant Bully. Cartoony yet pretty cool. I did an experiment where I made 2 textures using UVMapper and Bodypaint, one was a 512 x 512, the other was a 1024 x 1024... then painted both in photoshop to make sure they were exactly the same exept the 1024 size had a bunch more detail, then applied the textures to the model which I duplicated so I could see them side by side and compare. And what did I see???? No difference! The larger map looked as pixelated as the smaller!

So, how do I get a good looking texture without cranking up the texture to an unpractical size?

Thoughts? Tips? Ideas?

Cheers!

Start here, with the estimable Leigh van der Byl's articles (http://www.onona3d.com/tutorials.htm). The second one is 'Size Does Count' and concerns sizing textures. The first one, 'Texturing for Dummies' is also vital reading.

Try different sampling (under your texture) as well - the default MIP is quite soft. Try circle or square...
