View Full Version : Non square pixels rendering
illusioniste 03-25-2007, 10:15 AM Hello,
I just wanted to know how you do your rendering from your 3d soft for non square pixels rendering (such as NTSC or PAL).
Do you do it in square pixels and resize your image properly in your compositing application ?
I am asking this because non square pixel rendering tens to increase rendering time and causes some troubles for antialisaing ?
Please give me your tips.
Thanks

I haven't done a lot of this, but you have two choices... either render square pixels and let your compositor scale the image (which can lead to artifacts), or you can render non-square in which case your pixels most likely won't be scaled by someone else. By scaling I mean changing the original pixel data, re-rasterizing.
If you render square pixels, the compositor will need to either scale down one dimension or scale up the other dimension, depending on what image size you render. Scaling down has usually given me better quality than scaling up.
If rendering for NTSC, you should also look into interlacing. Interlaced CG tends to look a lot smoother than non-interlaced. Worth the rendering time and effort IMHO. You'll need to use non-square pixels I think.
Try some tests, taking them all the way out to the final output. Then compare. Should be obvious at that point which is best.
