View Full Version : Boats and their wake?
neilyb 03-06-2003, 02:16 PM I am about to animate objects moving through water, but I ain't got dynamics. Is it possible to create reasonable wake as they ove through the water. I am trying Proximal but so far results are not super...!
Thanks

This is not the answer you want. But I wanted to post this here anyway . .
If you have access to a DVD player, rent the movie Contact. It has some of the best effects "how we did it" reel I've ever seen (besides Fight Club.
On the DVD is how they did this crazy ocean scene with a composite of a wake!
Even if this does not help you - check out the DVD anyway - you won't be sorry. NOTE: Set aside at least half a day and be prepared to take notes! Unless you buy it of course!
You should check out RealWave if you are on a PC. They have a fully functioning demo that you could use. It allows you to bring in objects from Cinema to leave a "wake" in the realWave mesh.
Look on Plugin Cafe -> partners section for the link.

I did a ship going through the water recently for a test on an upcoming animation. We do not get real close to the boat so this may not work or you may be able to adapt it. I used a spline to make a shape that started around the front of the ship and went into a feather shape surrounding the ship and trainling some. I then extuded the spline and gave it some rounding. Then put some animated 2d SLA noise in the alpha channel and made the color white and made this a child of the ship. After tweaking the speed of the animated noise it looked real good.

Heres a quick and dirty test i did, first part was setting some particals with deflectors to make it branch out, then rendered from the top view.
A few effects in after effects noise ect(render out as tga+Alpha sequence), reimported in to cinema as a texture, in displacment/alpha/colour-channels. (play arround) then attach it to a plane that is child to the boat.

Divx avi.
i think with some time this could work.

I'd use the Waves plugin (free!), although it has some issues (don't know exactly what) with R8. You can download it from http://home.arcor.de/m1.haller
Install the plugin and try it out. Warning! When you open the sample files, R8 complains that the plugin is missing, but don't worry about that. (I think the samples are made with the older version of Waves). You should check out the example3.
Sorry about my terrible english :-)

Thanks guys. I am going to check out the waves plug, just as well I speak German!! I am having some small sucess with proximal, effected by a spline trailing behind the boat. By duplicating the splines after animating their scale outward i can get a sort of result! I will try to post if I get it good enough!
Waves looks cool!
Slouchcorp....er....not sure about all that After effects...way too complex for my small brain. Cool effect though!

Oh by the way this is what I am working on.....the project involves toys being animated and modelled. I intend the lego man to jump into action on seeing a wind up shark....he will dive in and pull the plug before the boat is attacked....
That looks cool bud
Bath wake and sea wake is going to be completely different.I would fill a bath like your image and mess around in the water and study the interaction of the ripples. You could even try the old PLA point move animation type for a small scene, might work, animation is not my strong point,or not yet :)

For that small amount of water you may be able to get away with NICKLE{SP}
hey pig nick can you explain exactly you get the waves to bounce off another object using the waves plugin. I cant get this to work

Make a plane. Then make, for example, a sphere and scale it down a bit (or scale the plane bigger). Go to the timeline and select the plane. Then choose "New Track -> Waves 1.11"
Add a new key and open it. Give name of the control object (in this case it's Sphere unless you've changed it). Go back to the editor and make the plane editable. Now plane should be deformed...I haven't used the Waves much so I'm not an expert...Just play around with the plugin like I did...
Thanks man ( I probibly should have looked in the examples before posting here). Thats a Big help
