while its great (and trust me it is).....i'm not sure if the use of a previous model like this....evn if it was lowered in detail is allowed....you should check in the thread that Roberto just posted to see if its okay

but still....good work

Cool model and nicely sculpted!

ChrisCorr
03-26-2007, 09:40 AM
Nicely sculpted indeed but a bit extreme... Gandalf has in no way such deep and "deforming" wrinkles around the mouth, makes him look like he's 100 years old (in real life).

The beard occludes alot but still... http://cache.kotaku.com/gaming/gandalf.jpg

Thanks for your comment,i do gree with u.also i'm not satisfied with the likeness,so i brush off the detail and adjust it a little bit. Thanks for your comment again, and the reference photo is really helps a lot.

I think perhaps the thickness of the folds of the skin is too thick. Ian face is a bit thin in the skin. He doesn't have much fat in his face so the wrinkles wouldn't be so rolly. More sharp. He's really coming along quite well, though.

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w116/DanielZ1979/low_01.jpgok,so far today, maybe i should hold on the high rez, finish the low rez first.

amazing work daniel!
Very interesting way to start box modeling a head, i've never seen it done like that.
I'm curious, and sorry if this is way off topic, but how did you make the hair in the model you first posted? is it geometry or a hair sim?
keep up the great work!

Dark-Dan

Magneto looks great. :-P So far, I think this is the best model I've seen for the challenge. I look forward to seeing him completed, especially with the textures and hair applied.

still have one month time to kill,i'm not gonna rush into texture and hair.what i'm gonna do is catch the best feeling of the pose:)
And this is the start.
some low rez wire frame of head and the magic wand(still wip).any suggestions is welcome and cool.:bounce: i'm here to learn from everyone.

I think this pose is hidding alot of the great modelling you did, also i dont think its powerfull enouth, i would suggest to do the pose he is in front of bilbos door ( smoking ), or maybe the one facing the balrog. This is a great entry, and im sure u will do a great job with the pose in the end.
keep it up.

Hey you're moving realy fast ! i like your pose for the character and the lighting too ,i think it could be a nice final posture but not so much with the head in profile ,maybe a semiprofile would be better.I like the hand too but i think it look much more as a witch hand than a wizard hand...So what are you going to do in the final render, useing some displacement maps for generating this detail? For my character i tryed some rendering but MR is crashing and Maya too for a mesh biger than 500.000 poly,So i think i will use displacement too.

Good Luck !

really nice. i agree with tiger, a 3/4 shot would be better (especially since we want to gawk at all those nice details.) i love the hand, it looks great. but you might have gotten carried away with the wrinkles. it looks very old. almost like the skin is just barely hanging onto the bones.

Hey tiger,i can't find good reference picture of the profile, and this head lowrez is not the final one, just like the hand, will be adjust to fit the high rez.as u mentioned about the displacement map, sure i'll use that, otherwise i don't need to redo the lowrez.

Haha, wow! Keep rocking it Dan!
The staff looks really sweet for just slapping a color map on that baby.

On the hand, you might want to subdue the middle knuckle wrinkles. They look a bit too stylized (reminds me of ripples in a still body of water when you drop something in it) but overall it's freaking sweet!

Keep it up!!! :D

As a model that will have a lot of hair, It is hard to tell the likeness while it is bald. subconsiously(sp?) we look to the hair for reference points to where facial features should be when comparing to a different image. I find that it's extremely helpful to build a very rough poly or nurb temporary hair. What origionally looks like there will be very little likeness, will end up looking very close. If you find yourself second guessing yourself, try building a mesh to see what the face looks like with hair around it.

somehow the head looks a little asian to me. may be its the eye lids or the nose or both. may be the face is little flat. the eye socket can be pushed back a little i think. other than that very good progress.

Star-Scream

I think he looks so asian because of this hair because when i look at the renders above he doesn't look asian.

Very nice work dude, i love it

In my opinion he looks a bit too old. I can remember that he is an old person, though he does not look that oldi^^ Your last pic looks pretty good. I hope that your CPU goes on working, so you will finish Gandalf. Want to see the final image =)
