Firstly, I apologies if this has been covered many many times already.

Let's say hypothetically that I have a character mesh just standing up. How do I create multiple animations with it? I know how to basic animate using the keyframe technique along the segmented bar at the bottom of MAX 5. But how do I "give the animation I just created a name" and then "start a new animation with the same mesh" ???

My end result will be to export this to an .X file to load in to my DirectX game engine.

Thanks for any advice

When you are using Max 5: Character->Create Character. Then you add all bones to this character. In the character options you can easily load and save animations.
In Max 4 I think it's only possible by using character studio. Or you save every animation in a different maxfile.

What you're asking is essentially what Non-Linear Animation is all about. MAX is, as it currently stands, not the strongest contender in this area I'm afraid.
