///////Original #1 Post///////
Update details: I wasn't going to post something up for this one until I was sure there was a chance I could do it. I've always been terrible at doing faces, let alone trying to get a likeness to someone famous, but I saw this as my chance to bite the bullet.

I made a first attempt by just jumping in the deep end with a box, and I started drowning, lol. It was horrid so I thought "I need some sort of tutorial" so I found one. It was the first tutorial I'd semi-followed in about 3 years, and I got to here.

For reference I had a struggle finding any so I had to end up using the ones that Hardwork found for his McClane, hope you don't mind that I borrowed them.

Just for fun I chucked my front reference pic on the model, and it looked kinda okay.
http://img249.imageshack.us/img249/822/003pn8.th.jpg (http://img249.imageshack.us/img249/822/003pn8.jpg)

I feel as though i have his side profile right, it looks right to me, but the front view needs a crapload of fiddling to get it looking right.

Extra: This was the last attempt I made at a head. Bear in mind this is meant to be Johnny Depp, lol.

http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/2614/qwts1.th.jpg (http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/2614/qwts1.jpg)

I did that back in July last year, and after 8 months modelling alot of other things I'm quite happy that I've been able to jump back in and actually model a head that doesn't look too bad, lol.

Update Details: small update....i tweaked the mouth/nose area to fit bruce a bit more...although i might have messed up his side profile a bit.....but overall i feel it looks more like him....

Okay my memory has gone on me again.

I haven't seen Die Hard in so long (will be buying the DVD asap). Is the first one the one where McClane has the gun taped to his back? And with the bare feet and all the broken glass?

I'm only picking up fragments of memories and I hope I'm getting the right movie, lol.

I just have a few idea's for what I want to do with the model and need clarification.

Yeah that's the first one. Nice model so far. Face looks a bit narrow, but I guess I just never realized how narrow Bruce's face is :D

robo3687
03-24-2007, 10:49 AM
Thanks Mitchel. Yeah his face is pretty narrow, lol

Update details: I tweaked the eye area this time, but I'm have trouble getting these wrinkles into the mesh easily. Also the lips are still bugging me so I'll have to work on them.I think its the corners that are off.

Of course you can use the references I found, that's why I put them on my post, and why everybody does on theirs.
and I m really happy to have a partner in this challenge.
Some critics :
-I think that your nose is too straight, the line in side view must be more rounded
-The mouth is too large
-The bottom eyelids needs to be more pushed

However, good start, and good luck for the next steps !

robo3687

hardwork: I honestly don't know where his nose bump went, lol. I had it, now it's gone. I'll fix that up.

Update details: I fixed up the mouth last night, I think it looks a bit better now, the eyes also got fiddled with heavily.

I made a bit of a to-do list up for my next few updates.

Click for larger
http://img86.imageshack.us/img86/5947/todojq7.th.jpg (http://img86.imageshack.us/img86/5947/todojq7.jpg)

The writing stuffed up a bit so it says:
- have to round out the cheeks (towards the top)
- and put the bump back (on his nose)
- and add a few wrinkles (I missed so many, lol)
- and add his ears of course....

On top of that I need to:
- see what I can do about the mouth, it's still bugging me.
- make him some new eyes.
- start making him asymetrical, his right eye is actually a little bit lower than the left, lol
- define the line from his nose to his mouth a bit better (laugh line)

And then start on the body.

robo3687
03-25-2007, 02:20 PM
Update Details: Okay well I finally tackled the ears, now the side of his head isn't so bare, lol.

I'm quite happy with them, they're the best ears I've managed to do so far. But even though I know they're in the right place they still look like they are too far back, but then again I never realised how far back ears are, lol. Maybe once he has some hair it'll look better. Still have some tweaking to do on them as well....

I also re-worked the mouth again, I think its much better this time around. I also added in a few creases and skull bumps. It's quite handy to have a bald head to work with (even though i'll be adding hair later)

As I see that you have made the crease and lines and wrinkles , I suppose you not
going to refine it in other app .
so I suggest you try and work out your polyline flow , and you got five vertex poly .
it still doesn't look like Mr. Willis . so a little more work on the overoll shape is needed.
good luck .

robo3687
03-26-2007, 02:26 AM
Doch: I don't actually have ZBrush or anything like that so yeah, I won't be refining it elsewhere, I'll just model in all the details.

That said i'm not overly concerned about the 5 sided poly's, cos as Roberto said topology doesn't matter for this challenge, plus its my first real solid attempt at a head so there's bound to be some topo problems.

I am however going to go over the whole model and fix things up as best i can, but since its only appearance that matter I figure that if it doesn't affect the surface then I'll just leave it, lol.

I'm trying to work out which part it is that is the wrong shape for Bruce, and I'm starting to think its his chin, seems a bit big. I've also gotta rework the laugh line entirely as it runs too far out from the mouth and should curve back in a bit, his mouth may need to be moved up slightly as well.

The eyebrow area also needs some fixing i think, and I have to fill out the head behind the ears so they don't look 'stuck on', lol.

I seem to be getting closer each time I revise it so hopefully I'll get there.

But yeah, after all that longwinded stuff, I am thankful for your comments.

He.. He.. no problem mate !!
Even though this contest not about polyflow & topology. trying to figure out a better
polyflow to your mesh is something that will make you learn something new from
this contest and will make you a better modeler .

a little note : you getting hard to define bruce face beacuse of that matter .

robo3687
03-26-2007, 03:58 AM
Thanks again. Just looking at the model and I've spotted a few places where I can simplify it a bit and hopefully make it flow a bit better, whilst keeping the definition.

I should have an update later on today.

robo3687
03-26-2007, 07:00 AM
I just spent the last couple of hours entirely reworking the poly flow and topology of the model and I think it's a lot better now. It just looks alot cleaner in general. I'm currently in the process of resculpting a few area's to match Bruce a bit closer and will update this post a bit later with some comparison shots between the last update and the current version.

The new one is starting to look more like a younger Bruce, which I guess is what I'm after, lol.

Hi,
I see that you've made the ears this week end, but be carefull on the reference of the profile, the photograph isn't exactly in perfect side view, that's why I think that your ears are too far forward. I've made exactly the same mistake sooner, and I couldn't find why his face seemed strange...
I'm sure that you'll get it soon, you advance very well...

Yeah, it looks much better, great job, but i think the ears is too way back, i think it could be a litle foward, and perhaps the face could be a bit fatter aswell, it looks spot on in the orthografic view, but it looks too thin on the perspective view, i would try to make the perspective mach more with the images u hv.
amazing job mate, you should try to get a trial of zb or mud to play with.

Andre: thanks, means alot to have someone else think it looks like him...lol....I almost can't believe I made it...lol....

I was going to try and do a bump map for small wrinkles but unwrapping faces isn't a strong point for me. I would use ZBrush but I've always had troubles using it and its in my bad books...lol...

However I haven't yet tried mudbox, and since it's true 3d as opposed ZB's 2D (which always bugged me), it may yet prove an option for the smaller details...I'll be sure to look into it.

thanks Binder, hopefully I'll make ya's all proud...lol....considering organic modelling hasn't been my thing for my entire 6 years of using max (less than 5% of my models have been organic...and 100% of those have been rubbish...lol) I don't like my chances of pulling off a win again, but my progress so far has given me hope...I've surprised myself alot this time around.

I've also just been checking out mudbox for a little while and am incredibly excited at the possibility of adding some nice fine detail to Mr McClane.

Update Details: Alright I've done a fair bit of tweakin on the head to make him a bit more Bruce-like. Moved the ears forward, fattened the front of his head, modified the laugh line (it now joins up with the nostril crease I also added), reworked his eyes/eyelids completely among a few smaller adjustments.

dude iv just read all the posts, you have come a long way since the begining, and I must say there are problems with the face but they are very easy to fix just by moving the bits around a little, I havent got very far on mine as im a bit busy with a university project but hopefully during easter i will work on it some more! I think the reason why we find it hard to spot the things which are wrong is cos we work on the models constantly, I like to take a little break for a day and go back and things tend to jump out at you! If i get a chance i will maybe do a paint over like i did for MrJames and see if i can point out some stuff to help you! This is a tought challenge but you havent lost the look of bruce, its just a pain to get it spot on! After this we will all be relieved to have completed the challenge lol :P :D

P.S. man you just posted up some new stuff just as I was writing that above lol! It has come along tones, it really is very very close! Great stuff :D:D:D

robo3687
03-29-2007, 02:13 AM
Jorel: Thanks, I also reckon I've got it pretty close in the last one. I was in a panic at about 3 o'clock the previous morning (was watching the cricket...lol) because through all my tweaking I'd done something drastic and I'd lost Bruce. I was so annoyed that I switched it off and when I came back to it yesterday I was able to see what I'd done and fix it as well as other errors I'd previously made (my model was slightly off center for my ref so things weren't positioned correctly....).

But yeah I have other projects and jobs that I work on when I need a break from Bruce, which is probably what I'll do today, cos when I come back to it I want to tackle the body.

03-30-2007, 03:19 AM
mitchel: nah that's not a final.....i was just messin around to see what it would look like...

Update Details: Now I know I said I wasn't doing anything until after the weekend BUT after watching the movie I felt inspired to do another round of tweaking, with the hair as well as the face. I think it's a lot closer now that it was...and I'm beginning to think maybe the headshape is right and now I need to move onto the "asymetrical" side of things and texturing to get the final look...thoughts?

Undoubtedly I will continue to fiddle with it anyway...lol

Update Details: I made a start on the body, just roughing it in at the moment, but I've noticed that Bruce wasn't exactly ripped in Die Hard so I won't be defining things too much. Also made a few small adjustments to his face, mostly his nose bump. I also started to do the inside of his mouth but don't have any renders of that yet, I wanna be a bit furhter along when I show that, its just two bright green gums at the moment, lol. Oh and he got some new eyes, not sure if I like them though.

nice... looks good so far... I thought you were doing a bust not a body :D.... lol... neway there is one thing that I noticed...

I'm not sure exactly what it is but in some angles he does look like Bruce, but in others he doesn't.... like I said I'm not sure exactly what it is... maybe his head is a little too thin... I'm not sure...

but it looks good sofar... good luck...

I think his ears are a bit too far back, i would bring them a bit closer to the front (with jaw line and everything on it). I would also, maybe pull the back of his head to the back a tiny bit. Nice body topology btw

robo3687

Fess: Thanks

Update details: I now know what had been stuffing up the look of Bruce, it was the field of view in the perspective views. I found this when I was trying to match it to photos in various angles and adjust small parts of the model to match. So once I got that sorted I realised there were other things that needed fixing, such as:

- ears needed to be slightly smaller, shorter (in height) and brought forwards more
- the cheeks needed a little bit of puffing out
- the back of the head and neck needed alot of widening and thickening
- his nose needed a small resize and a bit of adjustment where it meets the brow
- his eyelids needed to be tweaked a little bit for more shape
- his eyes needed to be a bit smaller

and his mouth also needs a bit more adjustment but it was about 2am when I realised that and I wanted to sleep...lol...anyways I present to you the new Bruce...

binder: thanks, I've got a lot of tweaking still to do on the face, mostly just minor things, but I took about 250 screencaps from the movie today which will be a great help to sift through and get things pretty close....

also in the next day or so I might show which poses I'm doing. I'm going to be aiming for

- 1 shoulders up
- 1 or 2 waist up
- 2, possibly even 3 full body...

because I'm rigging it, hopefully this won't be too hard to pull off...once i get the initial model done that is....still don't know how it'll go for the entry....whether i'll just have to pick one for each category....or do separate entries for each....

might do some work on the body tonight

Paul, you have done an amazing evolution on this model!

Just one suggestion, the back of the head still needs adjustment, it should be wider than the front, look at your model from the top view and it should be like an egg shape, the widest point being more or less five eyes wide viewing from the ortographic front view. hope this helps

cheers!

Update details: Didn't end up doing body work last night, just kept working on the head. I'm pretty happy with where it is now and other than adjusting the back of the head (thanks WhileYouWereArt) I'm probably going to leave it as is now. I matched it to about 5 or 6 photos and about 20 or so screen shots and for about 90% of them it matched pretty darn close. So headshape wise I think I'm done (of course I HAVE said that before...lol)

lookin much better... the other ones looked like the perspective was way off... but this is looking much better, keep it up

robo3687
04-04-2007, 09:39 AM
thanks Matt, it was so annoying when I finally figured out the perspective problem it was like "THAT's what it was?"...lol...

now that I'm happy with the head I was going to go ahead and texture it...but then I thought I should probably finish the body model first and then texture it...

Now I'm a texturing noobie as far as UV's and painting maps etc goes so I need a bit of clarification from someone in the know before I even get there....

can i use separate sets of UV's for various parts of a single mesh? (ie head, upper body, hands and feet)

Or do I need 1 set of UV's for the whole mesh?... I'm feeling like theres a shark in the deep end nipping at my feet and I really need some help with how to set all this out....

robo3687
04-05-2007, 03:24 AM
Update Details: Ok so I couldn't help myself and I ended up texturing the head somewhat anyway...lol... What we have here is a mental ray Fast SSS skin shader, with a colour map (doesn't show up much, need to make it stronger), and for lighting we have a skylight and an IES sun.

http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/1848/034gd8.jpg

This is the colour map so far

http://img295.imageshack.us/img295/9280/coloursmalltj7.jpg

And just for fun I thought I would put a Die Hard screen cap in the background and the play with it in photoshop (probably played a bit too much though..lol)

http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/4665/035kg6.jpg

And this is a comparison between this time and the first time I tried the mental ray skin shader on Bruce.

http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/5607/comparison3bc3.jpg

Spec, bump and displacement maps (and a finished and refined colour map) should be soon and should really help sell it as skin, but its certainly the best I've managed before. What do you guys reckon?

morphius-ms
04-05-2007, 03:49 AM
you know honestly I haven't tried anything like that... I always made it one set of UV's for one mesh... I haven't tried a different set of uvs for that one mesh...

about the head still lookin good... though I think that the texture is a bit pale...

robo3687
04-05-2007, 03:57 AM
thanks Matt, I agree about the pale thing, hopefully the next pass of the colour map will be a bit stronger...

Update Details: Only a small update, worked on the colour map and theres a bit of a spec and bump map done as well...it might be too dark now...lol

looking good man, keeps getting better and better, your doing a good job of getting that 1988 look, my bruce is looking far too old. looking forward to seeing the final model.

robo3687

Update Details: okay...now its getting ridiculous....i'm exceeding what I even though I was ever going to be capable of....lol...sounds over the top but I'm really surprising myself here.....

updated skin shader, no where near the "bad fake tan" look that I had before....got a bit more pink in it...still dark but I found that that is what matched closest to 1988 Bruce.

http://img296.imageshack.us/img296/2808/037qx7.jpg

fairly sure this is pretty damn close....due to this composite i did on a frame from the film... (hair, eyebrows, and majority of neck are real..oh and the body too obviously.)

http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/6950/038lq5.jpg

by doing that i identified a few things in need of a slight adjust:

- cheeks are too puffy, need to be brought in
- nose needs to be a bit longer (and thus the gap between nose and mouth shorter)
- neck needs to be thicker and shorter (hence why its not in the composite...lol)

but on a whole i was fairly shocked at how it matched in...lol..

thoughts?

I agree with you that the cheeks are a bit puffy. Also the eyes seem like they might be a bit wide. His eye balls look like they are completly white which looks a bit odd. You might want to sample some pixels from a real photo to get a more realistic color. Good start. I'm sure it looks more like him than his stunt double did. :)

robo3687
04-07-2007, 04:30 AM
yeh with the eyeballs they do have a texture on em, and its only about 20% white, but for some reason it doesn't show up very well...lol...i'll work on em a bit more....

and i only just noticed the eyes size as well, i think they just need to be brought in on the outside edge....hm...I'll check that out too...

Nice details on the bump map. I would made the wrinkles in the middle of the eyebrows a bit thicker, not so strainy.

robo3687
04-07-2007, 10:14 AM
thanks mitchel, yeh i've got to get those damn wrinkles right...lol...they've always annoyed me...

i really want to try and put the face into a more Bruce-like pose to see if the likeness sticks around......I might do that tonight....might as well do it in one of the poses I'm going to use for the final entry as well so I'll post those examples up later as well...

Since its slow here over the easter weekend, I thought I'd do a bit of a rethink over where I want to get for this challenge. I stated earlier that I wanted to do several busts, and full body versions of this model, but now realise I was probably getting a bit far ahead of myself...

So in response to that this is what I'm going to be aiming for as a priority:

1. A traditional form, shoulders up bust in this pose (or something close to it)

http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/8104/ndvd141li1.jpg

2. A waist up bust in this pose (with the gun taped to his back and probably a different facial expression)

http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/3255/ndvd000ys3.jpg

and then if I think I have the time:

3. A full body statue with this as the pose (maybe a different expression also)

http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/1/ndvd212co9.jpg

------

Now thats for the challenge, but for beyond the challenge I've started up a thread in the WIP area where I'll continue the project. My hope is to do some full scenes, with proper sets and lighting etc.

Most probably this

http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/3092/ndvd171he6.jpg

and this to start with

http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/6250/ndvd220xc3.jpg

The first of these was my initial idea for the full body statue but wanted to ease the load of the challenge.

------

Now back to the model. Last night I made a few feeble attempts at trying to push Bruce's face into some sort of smiling expression, the results were a bit messy and un-Bruce-like.

My method of doing it was to select some verts, put some soft selection on and then move them around a bit. Am I missing an easier way of making expressions or is that it?...lol

So yeah a little help there would be good..

I've forgotten the rest of what I was going to talk about now...so I'll stop this post...

morphius-ms
04-08-2007, 08:40 AM
hey paul, lookin good... but the skin on your screen cap, looks more oily than sweaty (the specular anyway)

about the model ( it is close) though it looks a little too round to be bruce but like I said it is really really close. here is a couple of things I saw... sorry about borrowing your pic...http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m28/morphius_ms/038lq5.jpg

the things that I am pointing to:
- the forehead is too round
- the jaw line doesn't have the angle
- and though it isn't in the pic I think that the cheek is too round too but you would have to look at it for yourself.

those are the things that I see right now...

But the skin looks really good... much better... and like I said the model looks really really close.

thanks matt, i've had a go at addressing those things you mentioned and hopefully they'll be noticeable when I update tomorrow, going to work on getting the body more developed while i watch the cricket tonight, so i'll have plenty of time

beetz15s

One thing that might help it come to life. Is making the eye aera more relaxed and organic. Right now its still a bit blocky. You have come a long way. GJ

robo3687
04-09-2007, 07:21 AM
thanks peter, i had started to notice that about the eyes as well, they're a tough nut to crack....

now i started modeling away last night during the cricket but unfortunately fell asleep...so there isn't really an update at the moment...lol....

i'm going to go do a little bit now so there might be something in a few hours

robo3687
04-10-2007, 04:10 AM
Update details: righto I again didn't get around to doing the body because I noticed a few things that were off with the head again...lol..I also reworked the neck a bit

I've also abandoned using hairfx for the hair due to mentalray's incompatibility with it (and turning the hair to geo killed my pc...lol)..and i couldn't get the control I wanted...so I've decided to try and get it with good ol' geometry (it is a modeling challenge after all) what you see in the pic below is just the "skull cap" separated and shaped like the hair then with shell and turbosmooth modifiers on it. Obviously its not the final hair and is really only the base that I will build from.

robo3687
04-11-2007, 06:08 AM
okay, again with the entry revisions....i'm scaling down again

I'll now be doing just a chest up bust in this pose

http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/8104/ndvd141li1.jpg

http://www.c7nema.net/canais/filmes/bruce/mclane.jpg

this is because I felt I was getting ahead of myself planning the rest of that out and it was stressing me (on top of other work I have) to a point where I couldn't work on it.

Another reason for this is that I hope to have it done the next week or so because I would like to start a second entry for the challenge, more on that later.

I will still aim to complete Mr McClane after the challenge is over but for now its just going to be the single bust.

robo3687
04-12-2007, 05:48 AM
okay heres a rough idea of what I'm going for as far as the final model is concerned

http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/9431/044ho7.jpg

but obviously clothed, textured, with hair and lit properly....oh and a finished stand complete with engraved name. I won't be including the MP5 because with the way I have the model it would just be hanging in space and looking out of place...so its out...

morphius-ms
04-12-2007, 07:14 AM
why not just do a close up of him... just wondering...

AndreKling
04-12-2007, 07:34 AM
I like the idea, but i think the base itself could hv more work on it, its too basic right now, i would try to model something that resembles a litle bit the movie, perhaps the shape of the base could be as it was the building, i dont know, and i really think he need his cigars and some facial expression, maybe a litle body twist would help aswell, so he isnt looking straight ahead in a symetrical way.
Keep it up, looing good.
Andre

robo3687
04-12-2007, 07:57 AM
matt: I'm not doing a closeup because the challenge is to create a bust or statue of the character, which is what this is

andre: I actually like the idea of using the building from the movie as the base...i might look into that.....as for the pose there's nothing posed at the moment. It will be twisted, with cigarettes and facial expressions and everything...so don't worry...it won't stay like this...

this isn't the final angle I'll be using either, its just a bit of an overview of the setup...

robo3687
04-12-2007, 09:32 AM
okay a minor update....

- has his shirt (untextured)
- skin shader on body is just the shader, no colour/spec/bump maps, which is why it doesn't match the head
- cigarette stand in, will model the proper one later on
- has the beginnings of an expression on his face...nothing too major though...
- base has new textures

http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/921/045to8.jpg

and i was just thinking about the base and while I'm still going to try out having the building as the base I was also thinking that simple might be better...because I don't want a base that takes the attention away from the model....we'll see i guess...

I've got several ideas rolling around in my head on how to tackle the hair, I'll try one out tonight and see how it goes.

robo3687
04-13-2007, 04:29 AM
okay i played around with some hair last night and went with the opacity mapped planes method....about 180 of them to be precise.....

it looks okay i guess...but I think i need to work on it a bit more.....

okay...now I'm happy to call the model finalled after this....it is to a point where I'm happy with it....just need to fine tune the render a bit now...my idea behind doing this is to set it up as though it were in some sort of Movie Icon museum or something...

I abandoned the planes for the hair and did it in Mudbox as well....I quite like how it came out...

Hi good work so far.

There are just some minor issues that will improve the likeness a lot when you will fix them.

1. the lips for bruce are a littlebit more fleshy ... espeachially the lower lip.

2. the eye area can be improved ... the lower eye area is hanging a littlebit more down.

3. the area betwheen the lips and the chin can be pulled down ... this area also got some "wrinkles"

I don't think I'm going to work on this one anymore for the challenge, it's not perfect but I wanna get Han finished and then start on my new project. I'm cutting things down majorly cos I have to get rid of all the stress in my life, it's driving me crazy.

So for the next few months I'll be doing 1 3D image, 1 2D image, finishing off a movie and some smaller work I have to do....not the piles of "pre-planned" stuff i had in mind...lol

You have a very good model that meets the requirements of the challenge.
If you have not done so already, you should post it on the voting thread:
