:thumbsup:nice how does this renderer compare btw to mental ray ?

It does multi-pass, so straight away I respect it more than Maya's mR.

The free version of Gelato 2.1 can be hooked up to Blender using this script

Where did you get the notion it didn't? Multipass in Mentalray has been around forever.

Hi folks, lets please not start renderer wars.

Ohhh.. if only it worked for the mac.

<sigh>

I will cast 1 whole vote in favor of a mac release! ;)

It's gotta start somewhere. :)

Not render wars but it would be nice to have some info why i should try this.. for example easier to learn, faster, better results whatever :)

I guess hardware acceleration by the GPU should make it faster than using only the main CPU's cycles for the rendering. Hoping it is atleast ....
Unfortunately it is for quadroFX only and here I am stuck with my Geforce :(

Would it work with a soft-Quadro?

The free version runs fine on GeForce cards. I'm running it on a 7900 GT without a problem.

where do people get their info, beats me ( Unfortunately it is for quadroFX only and here I am stuck with my Geforce)
ive been using it for more than 6 months already on a....brace urselves: geforce 6600
and it runs GREAT. im sure it would run better on a quadro...but from here to NOT RUNS on geforce..is a long way.

So you guys use the normal geforce driver, didn't turn your card into a soft-quadro?

The free version of Gelato 2.1 runs fine with a regular GeForce/GeForce driver

don't know about the 'Pro' version. That one might be locked to Quadro cards.

I have/had Pro and it worked fine on my Geforce 7800GT with regular drivers. Pro was *significantly* faster than the free version.

I thought it was a pretty good renderer, but what turned me off was the slowness of the raytracing. However that's exactly what they've sped up for this release so hopefully it's great now! Some features are really cool for sure. Its custom frame viewer has tons of little features I've never seen anywhere before that can be really useful.

I'd say it's an easy to moderately complex renderer to use. Some of its terminology and workflow etc is unique.

:) I've run it on a 5200. For simple scenes it's really not any slower than my 7x card on my other machine. I haven't the wherewithal to put together any complicated scenes, but that is supposed to be where it really starts to shine.

Free version of course.

Gelato's shading language, GSL, is very closely related to PRMan's RSL. No surprises there as Larry Gritz had a lot to do with the both of them. That being said, I'd imagine that Gelato would support AOVs on the shader level, giving you a lot more power and flexability than what you're seeing in the video demo, even.

mentalray supports a similar functionality through its user frambuffers, and yes, it's right there in mentalray for Maya. No production renderer would deny you access to the pre-comp framebuffer data.

His complaint i think is it can't be accessed by simply ticking some checkboxes... Which i would have to support..

The pro version will actually run in multiple threads. I wonder if that's the difference.
