What are these swatches folders that pop up in my scene folders all the time?

I think, the swatches are for the previews of the shaders, the little pics in the AttrEd and HyperShade

But I´m not sure

I think, it´s nt possible to avoid them

well I haven't had them for a long time, then all of a sudden I'm getting them all the time. They are soo annoying. Anyone know if webster is right? Makes sense to me but I'm still curious as to how or why they are created. Thanks webster.
