View Full Version : Matte Painting: Wrecked, Christianhaley (2D)

I have a couple of matte paintings from an animated short I'm working on that I figured I'd post here to try & get some feedback. They're pretty much completed, but I know I'll add little refinements further down the road once they've been off my desk for a while.
Here they are:

wow!! that is really some outstanding work! how long did each of these take? what is the actual size of these paintings?
Someone spared no skill in making these beauties! I love the first and third ones... they seem to have a grunge/futuristic feel to them which works very well with the colors.
The second reminds me of some deserted city street corner...

hhmmm, i love your work splendid:drool:

How were these done? They really do look incredible.
If you could post some of the 'in progress' or sketch images... :)
Of course, we'd all LOVE to see the animation when it is done..... possible?

Outstanding sense of light, atmosphere and depth.
My only question is, each of these paintings look as though they are from very different settings, so what kind of short would contain all of them? Please update!
Oh, man this is truly amazing. I also checked your website, there is some of the most beautiful work I've seen in a long time.
Would you care to elaborate a bit on how you did these ?
I really love the 1st two, but my only crit would be that the rock texture on the 3rd one doesn't give it the right scale. A little fog like on the 1st one would also probably help making it more gigantic.
But awesome overall.

WOW.....those are gorgeous
I like all 3, but for some reason that initially escaped me I liked the third one more....then I realised it reminds me of a Quake or UT CTF level :D
As for the animated short, can you tell us anything about it, characters etc? Having seen these I can't wait to see the animation!

Thanks for the feedback guys. ...I'm keeping the story under wraps until it has been developed a bit more. There are a couple ideas I may save for future projects, so I'm trying to keep this one a secret until it' s complete. I hate to do this, but it'll be cooler in the end I assure you.
Oh, & the mattes typically take about three weeks to complete. I only get to spend about 3 hours a day to work on them unfortunately. My wife & son go to bed & then I get my time on the box.

I'm curious... as matte painting are used as backdrop, why would you put an element like a rippling flag in one? Wouldn't that be instead composited?
Gorgeous work, by the way, and you don't need me to tell you that.

Yes...i've heard about Matte Paintings...it looks like a new generation of 3D art. (by mixing 3D model and handy paint)...

christian, your work (here and on your site) is phenominal, as if you didnt already know though.
trully great to look at.
i love all the mattes youve done, they are just so inviting.
"HI, im an addiction come look at me for 15minutes"
great work man.
Hi, great work. My only crit is that the wreckage in the first matte looks a lot like the world trade centers 9/11 wreckage. You might not want to reference that unless that's your intention.

Each one of those mattes portrays something very unique. The first has a beautiful sky on picture of a wasteland which I think you capture very well.
The second has amazing lighting with those signs, what did you use for reference. It reminds me of the old Role playing game "Shadowrun."
The third one just feels very majestic. Those flags flapping in the wind, a storm in the background brewing.. Reminds me of a stage in Unreal. Overall, beautiful work!
:buttrock: :buttrock: :buttrock:
I wish I could do that...
Just checked out your website.. More amazing work I love your style. Can't wait to see more!

I haven't posted on this message board forever, but I just logged back in to tell you I just crapped my pants looking at those.
Splendid word, whatever you do, do not stop.

wow i would love to know the process of how these were done? excellent work, they are amazing.

...Agian, thanks everybody for the feedback. Yea, the Matte with the flags has the composited flags already in place. The back plate is the clouds so I can move them slowly in the distance... There is a faint fog layer over the bottom of the clouds moving a bit slower... There is the landscape layer on top of that ...& the mountains in the foreground. The topmost layer is the flag animation & there will be a character plate running across the bridge.
...The 911 similarities are inescapable I'm afraid. I ran into others from a different forum that made comments to that effect as well. I think it will be hard / impossible for us to look at an image of a destructed city & not think of that horrific disaster.
...To answer about the apps: I use Lightwave 7.5 for my 3d, Photoshop for the painting, & After Effects to combine the plates.
WONDERFUL WORK :buttrock: :buttrock: :buttrock:

I love the detail and quality in the first one. The third one is not bad, theres something about the texture on the rocks on the left that gets me.
The second. WOW I love the realism and neon lighting you created in that one. Bravo.
03-06-2003, 08:29 PM
