View Full Version : Quick dust and scratches?
Eman597 03-06-2003, 03:03 AM Hello, I have a model of a helicopter and am UV texturing it with targas made in Photoshop. I want it to look like its been through a couple of years of use, so I need some dust and scratches on it. Is there a quick way to do this? I dont really want to have to figure out excatly where I need to put each individual scratch or hand paint all of that. Thanks

actually, nothing in texturing its quick.
but i have a technique.
get an image of scratch and turn it to gray and add a lot of contrast to it, this will be your mask. then paint the helicopter texture(the shell) and apply the mask to it. then grab a shiny metal or rusty metal and put it bellow the shell layer.
the mask can even be used as specular map.
hope this works for ya.

where is a good place to find (hi-res) scratch and dirt textures?
i've got two, but using them all the time isn't so good ;)...

Hi Phoenix,
Probably the best place is at jeremy englemanns site - http://art.net/~jeremy/photo/public_texture/index.html theres plenty of crap here that you can use. There aren't too many dust images but there are plenty of bits of dirty edges that you can use as masks and ragged edges for your dust colour. Heres a small jpg of a texture I'm doing for a bell jetranger (Which I'll probably never finish cos I'm a lazy ****er.)
