View Full Version : Gnomon and other learning materials
ZippZopp 03-06-2003, 02:01 AM Hello, sorry if this isn't a direct question about maya techniques, but, i've graduated college where i was an art major, i'm shifting my interests to 3d. living at home now, and working, i have some free time to start learning. i plan on goin back to school. but i was wondering what learning materials are good. i'm currrently working my way through Maya 4.5 Fundamentals and its been good, i'm really enjoying it.
i wanna cram in as much info as i possibly can. the two schools i'm thinking of going to in the fall are Gnomon and Full Sail. Full sail is much more convenient for me because i'm the east coast, its less expensive and living expenses are less as well. but i want to get a good head start before attending school so i'll have more time in that environment to do more advanced stuff. How are the Gnomon DVDs or the Gnomon online training? are they good for beginners? or should i just keep goin, get comfortable with maya and then check them out? any other recommendations on resources for learning maya?
i'm sorry if this is redundant, and answered quite often, but any help would be greatly appreciated! thanks

after you get comfortable with maya, and you have decided this is what you do indeed want to do, then i would suggest getting the gnomon dvd's. a|w has some great training dvd's... but they've got some lousy ones as well. at least with gnomon you are pretty much assured to get quality.

I totally agree with Wraith, sometimes I've gotten some busted videos from A|W, but Gnomon has always been really good. The DVDs are great and Alex Alverez is really good at explaining things and teaching the lesson, I've got a couple books that came with CD from other companies where the instructors stutter and just plain can't talk, but with Gnomon you don't have to worry about that stuff.

Also remember Zipp,
That going to Gnomon, though more expensive, can also increase your chances of getting into the industry. They're in Hollywood, surrounded by studios that I'm sure visit gnomon frequently. It's just a better chance for you I think, and with such a small opportunity to get into this industry, you'd want every advantege possible.
Gnomon dvd's : Great if you buy them in packs or more than one of the same category. Example, it's better to get Kinematics 1,2,3 rather than getting Dynamics 1, renderig, organic modeling 1, kinematics 1. I think it's more beneficial if you go one subject at a time, or go all out and get all of them :)
Like Paul mentioned, there's the Animator's Gym if you want to go in the direction of character animation. That's where I want to go, so I have ordered this dvd, and can't wait to check it out. :)
Also, don't forget to check out the tutorials post at the top of this forum, lots of free stuff online.
Hope this helps,
George

nice, thanks for the information everyone. being a total noob i feel like i'm in this whirlwind of information and don't know which direction to go! i'll be sure to check out all those links!
i'd really love to attend gnomon because it is right in the center of things, it would really open up some doors, but like i said, its more expensive, i'm on the east coast so full sail is just a lot more convienient for me. but i'm hoping there is a way i can go to Gnomon, from what i've heard, its a lot better. but again, thanks for the info!

Ive heard some peolple were dissatisfied with a few of the DVDS, but from my experience, Any of them taught by Alex Alverez are REALLY good. They say there are many ways to do each one particular thing in Maya, but their way has always been the most practical and efficient from my experimentation. I got some advanced tapes, I dont know if they have Intro to Maya stuff. If you can learn this way do it, dont go spend 30 times the $ based on a certificate because employers hire you for your portfolio instead( unless maybe for programming)
No i dont own stock in Gnomom, but they helped me so much, I try to spead the word when I can

I also add a vote for "Maya Character Animation" by Jae-jin Choi. I've had a bit more time to look at it and it's quite good.

dude i would suggest the gnomon dvds over the alias ones. i bought facial animation setup and cgi integration -maya live from alias and they really really suck
then at a later stage i bought the gnomon kinematics and skinning dvds and well to say the least they RULE
awesome presentation and that alex alvarez dude is goooood
anyway as previously mentioned in this thread dont buy everything that is out there
c what u r comfortable with i.e modelling, texturing, character setup or animation and then go in for the vids 2 go to the next level
