Wohoo what a soldier! He really deserves frontpage and 5* and much more :)
Nice detailing, texturing, lighting and shading!

One short question: How long was the production time you had for this excellent guy?

03-22-2007, 12:27 AM
Dito. 5 stars

How did you achieve the style in the illustration? Straight form the render or massive photoshopping?

03-22-2007, 12:35 AM
very nice model,texture,lighting.

cool character.congrats for the frongt page.

03-22-2007, 12:41 AM

btw. is a near futre of london? may i ask how close we are to this moment?? :)

03-22-2007, 12:41 AM

your work is always amazing. this character is SOO COOL!! personally i like your creature work the best. there so clean! which do you prefer doing?

03-22-2007, 12:52 AM
Hi Alessandro,

I have a very minor dispute about the character’s pose in the painting. Unfortunately it’s a pet peeve of mine.

Military professionals generally keep their index finger outside of the trigger guard unless they are actually firing the weapon. By keeping your character’s finger outside the trigger guard, I think you would make him look even more convincing and authentic.

03-22-2007, 01:08 AM
Che te devo dì, Ale, mo su treddì che ci vieni a fare... :D

03-22-2007, 01:17 AM
nice model! love the character design and the style.

i'm going to tentativly step out on a limb here and amidst all the "ooh you blow my minds" and "wow u r so cools" say i'm not actually sure i like the "illustration".

I love the model, love the textures, etc etc..but i find the peice is very tonaly/visually flat, and the character blends into the background, there also isn't enough lighting contrast for my tastes.
the treatment seems to have made it very "soft" looking too, and the texture accross the work seems almost uniform, and for me reduces the impact of the work.

this flat look might have been what you were after, who knows, but its not to my tastes.

*anti flame disclaimer*
i'm not being a grumpy critic, who's pissed cause he can't make stuff as awesome and has to rain on other people's parades. I'm offering this as constructive criticism, because i think the artist is good and deserves my honest feedback and not just another "your so good" post. Which are nice, but dont really aid in development imho..not that people shouldn't express their likes about a work, i just think saying *why* you like/dislike is more valuable in the end.

carry on..

03-22-2007, 01:21 AM
Realy great image. Amazing level of detail and wonderfull output. 5stars - no doubt. Gratz man.

03-22-2007, 05:36 AM
Wow.... This went straight into my inspiration folder..I hope to one day be as good as you, and maybe work at blur.
I love the blur style, always so detailed. Pretty much any cool cinematic/game trailer I have seen lately has come from blur.

Anyways keep up the AMAZING work!

03-22-2007, 06:01 AM
I love the work. Great Piece.

Can you explain something to me about the business of this type of art work. Do you have to be working for a business to produce this?

Meaning if it's commissioned it's already paid for before it's done and the artist is compensated. What about if you don't belong to one of those companies and you do a concept work that can be used in a game?

How can an artist get compensated, or protect it yet display it? Or market his concept out there among game developer? Obviously this work is going to inspire more work, but at least the artist has been compensated before it is adapted into the mainstream.

My apologies if this isn't the right CGtalk forum to ask this question.

03-22-2007, 06:05 AM
Insanely good, could we see some closeups of the final render, especially the head of the hunter?

03-22-2007, 06:17 AM
Well done...Excellent:scream:

03-22-2007, 06:29 AM
Damn! Always impressive, Alessandro! This one's even better than your last piece. I love it!

At GDC, I saw this poster and fell in love w/ it! I wanted a copy but they didn't have any left. =( Freaking awesome modeling. All those little pieces in the armor... whew. That must've been a LOT of work. Beautiful model. Are you working for Massive Black? They seem to be doing alot w/ Hellgate.

03-22-2007, 07:59 AM

prox-emics (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=190658) : Uh...thanks man..well, i love character modelling..well, that`s not totally true...i love modelling in general, and i love to contestualize them in the end...did i answer ?

scrimski (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=48634) : Massive Photoshopping of course...several layers of colour balance, painted stuff ,compositing of painted background elements and stuff like that.

hominid (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=14685) : Ah...really ? i wasn`t aware of that...good to know for next projects, thanks for the appreciation!

cecofuli (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=54400) : Beh, mi fa piacere cmq far vedere le cose in giro...poi su treddi ci sono tante persone simpatiche ^^

Layer 01 (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=58536) : Yeah, i hear you and i agree about some "flatness" of the illustration.
I can tell you that i "tried" to get an illustrative feeling, more than a standard realistic 3d visualization approach, this implies flattening things a bit, speculars are not as neat as they are in reality, lighting is fake in some parts....and yes, contrast tends to be reduced.
Even colour variations has been something to think about, and i agree when you say that probably it`s a little monochromatic. But i want to explain why :

The point is that you generally start in these kind of artworks with models with a given style and texture palette... so putting them togheter into a convincing illustration is sometime a bit "tricky" because part of the colour scheme is already set from the beginning. This is first limitation. Then it comes posing the characters in a way that they doesn`t look stiff and boring....this may sound obvious, but even if you get a nice "correct" pose from a rigging and anatomical point of view...you notice that something from a "comic style" point of view is not working...so you start forcing proportions and perspective...sometime it`s a real pain.

That said, when u get something visualing appealing from an illustrative point of view, you feel very lucky

I appreciate very much your critique man, because i saw myself facing those problems you mentioned... i think that i managed to solve them in part, but probably there is still some things to improve and my workflow needs to be perfectioned even though i really think that 3D is not the best medium to produce this kind of illustrative things....but since i can`t paint in 2D (sigh)...i do my best with it

Hynol (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=202307) : Thanks sir!

ZhengXiQiang (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=272601) : Yes...that has been made in post to flatten things a bit . Thanks!

SheepFactory (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=406) : AH...did u see the cinematic ? If not check blur`s website...i think they made a wonderful job animating it! Thanks for the appreciation!

5 BIG stars , of cours:applause: !

03-22-2007, 01:30 PM
Nicely done. I love your composite picture! Is the clock tower also 3d?

Only critiques:
1. The hands and wrist seem stretched out
2. It doesnt' look like the the speculare layer varies much. It would be nice to see it highlite the bumps and cuts in the metal. Right now ti seems uniform.

03-22-2007, 02:01 PM
that's like way better than your other stuff. Truly amazing! You deserve ur reputation. Seems to me like texturing and illustration are you best skills!

03-22-2007, 02:03 PM
Man I would kill to animate this guy :)

I would kill anyone who asked me to skin him!

Fantastic detail as always... But on your model pose you can see 'SAFELOCK' written backwards on his left arm.

You know, because that's what everyone's going to be looking at!

03-22-2007, 02:07 PM
Love seeing your work - masterful detail. Great work, as usual!

03-22-2007, 02:10 PM
12 days to model?? wow, im assuming though you start from a generic character mesh you already have rather than start from scratch. Is it normal mapped/displaced?

03-22-2007, 02:52 PM
Fantastic. I enjoy looking at your scene/wireframe images as much as the finished piece. Great work as always. :)

03-22-2007, 02:57 PM
Hi Alessandro!

Wow! this is just awesome work:thumbsup: i'll give you *****

03-22-2007, 03:51 PM
Oh my... you're exceeding yourself ! This one I want printed ! Shoot !... d....

Nice to read game storyline too, very interesting.
You translate the spirit of it on that image, incredible artwork !

Impressive composition too, and it's scary to see that you made such massive photoshop work as well. I loved that sky color and overall mood !

This is not only FP material for CGTalk but for any magazine as well the game box !

Congratulations ! And keep inspiring us like that ! cya,

Lincoln Hawk

very great work Alessandro as usual

are u rig this character for illustration or good guys at blur do it?

keep it up dude:thumbsup:

03-22-2007, 04:26 PM
Great stuff man, this is such a different theme than the really great "Gun" poster you had posted a while back. I really love the design, colors, everything. I would have to say that the graininess is my favorite. Really makes it look gritty, and kind of reminiscent of that whole graphic novel to the big-screen type of thing that i've been seeing a bit lately. Great work! Really inspiring!

03-22-2007, 04:34 PM
just delete 2th post

Simply amazing! Just the modeling and texturing alone...perfection. Can't wait to see the cinematic from you amazing artists there at Blur.

03-22-2007, 05:46 PM
Very nice.

03-22-2007, 05:58 PM
Hey there, Ale!

It's great that you finally got permission to publish this illustration. If not it would have been a real waste as it's always upsetting for the artist to not being able to expose his stuff.
As for the subject, his pose truely rocks. He is so sexy even with his helmet on :D

03-22-2007, 07:02 PM
Just watched the cinematic...think I sharted...just a lil bit. Seriously tho...friggin amazing!

03-22-2007, 07:04 PM

Wow! This is truly amazing.

Thanks a lot for posting the wires and the other closeups. That's very kind of you.

03-23-2007, 12:58 AM
That is such a cool illustration. One of my favorites. I was lucky enough to snatch a poster of this at work. :buttrock:

03-23-2007, 01:02 AM
5 star ! . I like .... well done.

03-23-2007, 01:08 AM
so wonderful! I like the gear on the character!

03-23-2007, 02:08 AM
Alessandro this is an amazing piece worth no less than 5*'s. very inspiring. Only thing which i find odd is the shape and function of the shoulder armor. Looks too CG rough sub-D shaped if you know what I mean, particularly the bevel running inside it. Also not sure if intentional but some of the scratches on the armor texture appear to be bumped outward rather than the opposite. But those are very minor things. Keep up the sweet work.

03-23-2007, 02:26 AM
all i keep saying to myself is ...
"this guy's sick"

seriously, that's all i can say.

03-23-2007, 05:40 AM

03-23-2007, 09:28 AM

03-23-2007, 01:16 PM

03-23-2007, 01:29 PM
How do you wear this kind of armor?? Looks exhausting!

Simply insane! I love post-apocalyptic concepts!
The mood here is fantastic!!
Keep it up.

03-23-2007, 01:46 PM
Holy sh... it can be real...

03-23-2007, 03:11 PM
Really awesome job and great modeling and texturing, just like in all of Blur's work on the Hellgate London images/cinematics. Now if only the game looked anything remotely close to this good, we'd have a sweet-ass RPG/FPS on our hands.

03-23-2007, 05:58 PM
Grande artista !! :buttrock:

Impressionante lavoro.

Complimenti :bounce:

03-23-2007, 06:15 PM
wow i think i just shat myself. 5 stars!

03-23-2007, 08:46 PM

Hey Ale!
Grazie! 5 stelle per me ti continuo a seguire.....

In gamba! :scream:

03-23-2007, 09:49 PM
Like others have said that's a great model and textures rock too! you guys from Blur know your stuff :)

03-23-2007, 10:13 PM

03-24-2007, 08:34 AM

03-24-2007, 08:40 AM
I love it! Except for one thing: The desigon of the gun. In my eyes, it looks a bit to old fashoned in comparison with he's very futuristic armor...
But yeah... maybe that is part of the design.
Fantasic work anyway!

03-24-2007, 08:46 AM
really nice work! I like it

03-24-2007, 09:12 AM

03-24-2007, 05:06 PM
great character, great execution!
since the first time i saw your aviator kid on cgtalk, you never disappointed your audience. keep up the good work!

03-24-2007, 07:20 PM
i have only one critic if you care on; monster at the backward was killed by some futuristic harpoon spears... But when i look at the big picture, i can't relate the flamethrowing weapon with the stakes on monster...

The rest... Dude awesome design... Maybe more special force soldier than a futuristic hunter but, like i said, cool design...

03-25-2007, 08:21 AM
just awsome..
amazing design modeling and texture..

finally I have a goal to make my piece like this.
so pls tell me.how long did u take to model and texture.?

03-26-2007, 02:59 PM

Greaaat!!! Fantastic!!!

03-26-2007, 04:43 PM

04-01-2007, 04:02 PM
Damn AWSOME work!

love the renders, any chance of a look at the shaders you used (or a screenshot of them) and mabey a explination of the whole project?

Also what did u use to render the image with, standard scanline??? could you give a little explination on your lighting enviroment that you used.

Would really be cool if you would :D

When you doing another?

04-01-2007, 07:38 PM
To add to the army of comments here.... WOW. That is totally amazing. You are a true master! One of the best CG images I've ever seen, ever.

04-04-2007, 02:42 AM
great work!

Very beatiful model and compositing ;)

You are the best in Italy...

P.S.: fare una sosta di lavoro a queste ore per leggere tutte le pagine e vedere i vari modelli è una delizia per gli occhi rossi sotto stress lavorativo ;) Grande!...

04-04-2007, 11:07 PM

Incredible work. What a devastating scene. 5*.

04-17-2007, 02:23 PM
Dude, as has been mentioned a few times, thats pretty frikken nice !

I think you've done a great job of giving it an illustrative feel. In fact, as someone else said, it already looks like a poster.

On a small side note, the only thing that sticks out to me is that, being a Stealth suit, the little glowing parts on the suit ('cept for the 'eyes') should not be glowing.....
"What ? How did they SEE me ?" *grin*

But that doesn't detract at all from an awesome piece of work.
Nice one!

04-27-2007, 08:18 AM
Great character! THe modeling is simply superb!

05-09-2007, 07:32 AM
amazing work!! Alessandro!!! the best............ the best in Italy...

Title: The Hunter
Name: Alessandro Baldasseroni
Country: Italy
Software: 3ds max, Photoshop, ZBrush

Sometime back i had the chance to make this Hunter cinematic model for the Hellgate London`s game cinematic , realized by Blur Studio.
Later on came this illustration , hope you like it !

I love how you've based the Hunter's weapon on the LSW, the British Army Use's. UK FTW

This give it more of a Post-apoc feeling...even though its in the future. the weapons they use are still just modifications of the old ones :P

05-17-2007, 08:22 AM
wow!so great!

Your work is truly inspiring.

09-24-2007, 03:48 AM
wow!!! way cool man. nice worn armor.

05-30-2008, 01:08 PM
Absolutely awesome work mate, really like the setting and the use of colours really gives it that post-apoc feel.

saying that, only minor gripe, along with the bloke earlier about the guy having his finger in the trigger guard is that the rifle being all that single colour, obviously a very nice model for the LSW however I'd just like to suggest a bit more contrast to the handguard, magazine and optic from the body of the weapon and barrel. (and also bit cheeky having it in the left hand as the LSW is right handed only!)

Besides that, absolutely amazing shot, 5 Stars definatly!

06-18-2008, 12:51 PM
the warrior is so realistic i would like to see the frame for the image.

09-22-2008, 11:26 AM
Wonderful concept and modeling!
I love the gear design!
5 stars!!!
