thanks guys i still have a long way to go, as the base model is only simple at the moment, im gunna detail more in zb which will be a challenge as im still only learning zb.

but should be great fun, im gunna try and put a slight smile on him, as this is the pose im going to try and go for

hey guys, anybody know how to go from 2.5d to 3d... ie zb to max

renders from both packages

zb being the best likeness

It looks like displacement map, try to create a displacement and normal map, it might give u a better result than a pure difuse map.

In the tools menu you will find a sub heading for makeing Normal or Displacement maps. I've only done normal maps myself.

1. The basic idea being that you have a base mesh that you Model and UV and then export as an OBJ. You could also model something and export a lower sub-divison it and UV it. You can do the UVing in Zbrush but it makes it impossible to do the clean up in Photoshop.

2. In zBrush crank the divsions and model.

3. Set the divisions back to the lowest settings and then create a map. After its made you export it (from the texture swatch choose xport)

4. Use it like a bump map but set it to Tangenal Space Normals

Hope that helps out some.

its the prospective issue im having trouble with, as its the same mesh rendered in too different packages, i think the prolem is that i modelled in ortho views, but the photos are prospective,,, which i why its looks so much better in ZB.... ive tried fixing

did alittle more today, i think i nearly sorted the prospective problem out
still lots todo, ive only done a nump at the mo, so lots of sculpting todo, plus those damn eye's, which i know will let the whole image down, coz i just cant seem todo them in max

hi eddie

really nice work so far!

bout the eyes: theres a really good tutorial on the gnomonworkshop (http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/tutorials.html) website about creating realistic eyes... maybe that can help you.

thanks mate, but that ones for maya, and i use max, the problem i have are the shaders, ive never been good at eyes, but no one seems to want to give up there secrets when it comes to max

MrJames

The likeness is good, the shader needs a bit of work, are you going to put a spec map on it? That will make it look tonnes better in my opinion. Keep up the good work :)

eddieellis
03-25-2007, 03:29 PM
hey James, its does have a spec map on at the moment, but im still tinkering with the shader... i really should get on with the model in zb, but all in good time i guess

Oh yes forgot to mention, I've seen part of this tutorial and although its for Maya I'm pretty sure you can apply the same principles to Max, give it a watch, you never know it still might help :)

Those eyes are MUCH better. Well done. However, do start to look indepth at the reference for the rest of the head. Your effort will pay off.

Thanks mate, yer i still have along way to go, its still not quite right,

i think more attention to detail, plus the fact that its alittle too semetrical at the moment, but its getting there :)

i think the textures are very very misleading. the eyes also look like they are cut out of a reference image. photoprojection a real image can make your model look good but you will see the difference when you take off the texture or change your camera angle.

if you want to make a better judgement of the actual model then remove all textures and compare the grey shaded model.

totallyAgree!...textures shouldn't be added until you're completely happy with yourModel....yourModel should look like the person even in shadedMode...if you're having a hard time seeing what needs to be changed...then take a day or two away from it...when you comeBack...you'll see what needs to be worked on.....also ( if you haven't already ) take a look at more ref images of him from different angles...sometimes you'll see something in one image that you missed/didn't see in another.....

excellent....now I'm sure you can see what needs work and where right....:) ( like the pic with the blood on his mouth, notice that your mouth is tooWide...face is a tad bit wide as well......the brow.....lowerRight image, you can see that his nose actually comes out alil more than what you have...etc.. )

when it does comeDown to texturing time...it'll look evenBetter....

yes mate your right, i can see things allot better now... the mouth thought is really tricky, the smile anyway, wouldn't that spread the mouth alittle ?

actually yes, it is alittle too wide

Boone

No - the mouth now sticks out like a sore thumb. You need to work on it. On the first two(looking at the camera) pictures - the upper lip. Its slightly different. The middle part seems to be flat rather than pointing up slightly. Though on the other hand( the picture with blood over his chops) his lips follow a more straight in the reference whereas yours is more curved. And the one where hes looking up, the reference lips is like a boomerang whereas yours is less so. The different pictures are all saying that its wrong, but they conflict with each other...hmmm.

The other thing - his nose! Examine the tip on the reference, its long and elegant - a predators nose! Yours seem more bullish somehow...

Still, keep going as this will turn out to be a cracking work.

hi eddie

nice work so far , i'm planning to get into this hannibal but i couldn't find a good profile Ref.

can you please send me those pics, or even give me the link to those last pics you posted ?

now you are on the right track. all you need to do now is keep comparing and contrasting.

however, some of the images have slight facial expressions which is distorting some shape. so take that into consideration as well.

at first look i would say the jaw needs to be narrower. the eye lids are off aswell. the tip of his nose is also slightly bent towards his left.

thanks for the tips guys, im gunna have a couple of days off, i may do the upperbosy and mask, when come back to it with fresh eyes...

cyfer : i got the ref's some BZ central, heres the link http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=38982&page=2&highlight=hopkins

Yo eddiie,

This is really good! Very recognizable as Hopkins with or without texture! Yeah there are tweaks you can do to get it closer, but you've basically nailed it! Go man go!
