View Full Version : character: space pirate sidekick
Heya all. Here's the continuation of my LOTR challenge, the smork. I didn't have the time to finish within the challenge deadline so I'll just lump the rest in here :D
You can see an explanation and the first steps in this thread
http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=36926
http://home.tiscalinet.ch/cgtalk/pics/lotr_wip/bodyfront01.jpg

The body has been added, and apart from some tweaking should be done. Next up will be the shorts, then the jacket.
hard c&c very welcome!!

Wow! Just an extremely well modeled and interesting character.
But who put his feet in cement blocks?
Just kidding, I can't wait to see it completely finished.
It looks like his calves are thicker than his thighs? Can't really tell with the shorts covering them, but it seem like it would be the other way around.
I like the thin bony arms, but perhaps they get a little too thin just above the elbow?
This is just nitpicky stuff, though.

Hi Wiro!!
I like your style a lot:) The model is comming really nicely. One thing which bother me are eye sockets, I think they are too "planar" i would round them so they conforms to the head shape. Dont know if you will put him eyeballs if no then its probably done on purpose...
Keep updating, man!
P.S. How many hrs were spent on him already??
lurifrax

that´s a cool character you got there! good work..
but is the shorts supposed to be so wide or are you going to tighten them to the body?
hi folks, thanks for your replies
betelgeuse: his thighs are thicker but not by much...I'm still mucking about with proportions so I might tweak the arms and legs a bit still. I wanted him to look both boney but strong.
Libor: I'll have a look at the eyesockets, you are right they might be too planar still. Yes he'll have eyeballs (those blacks are spheres) and its not easy to build around huge balls like that :)
I'm not sure how many hours are spent...I work a bit now and again, half an hour here, some browsing and doing other stuff there...I got no clue really :D
lurifrax: oops you replied while I was typing...yeah I want to give him really big shorts to show off his small size. they are just placeholders right now though.

i like... be good to see some spine and more detail in the torso... although it is wip so i'm not sure if yoru still working on that.
be great to see this guy moving.
Ah, I forgot to mention that I won't be adding much more detail to the back and most of the torso because it'll be covered by his jacket later (see sketch in challenge thread)
Wiro
Okay, since the LOTR challenge is over I decided to totally go over the design again. I'm more of a sci fi fan than fantasy so I'm going over to what I'm better at :)
I decided to make this guy into a companion for the model I made for the pirate challenge as seen here:
http://www.secondreality.ch/gallery/wip/pics/gitest00.jpg
So no more fantasy armor. He'll sport a (flak?) vest, cargoes, utilitybelt and possibly a huge handgun on his back, something like this sketch
http://home.tiscalinet.ch/cgtalk/pics/lotr_wip/pirate_smork.jpg
I've almost finished the pants. They still need thickness around the waist and ankles. Same goes for belt. The shoes are yet unfinished. I'll be adding the jacket soon.
I wanted to keep all folds and seams really big to emphasize his small height, I wonder if this comes over? I'll probably still have to fatten up the seams yet a bit more.

Any idea how to "piratize" him? I'll be adding the usual ear rings etc later on :D

Eyepatch?;) Maybe some funky pirate hat? ooops, hat will be hard to fit on his head, because of the ears ;) Great, as usual:thumbsup:
You're doing a slick job on Smork, Wiro.:buttrock:
If you're open to more pirate suggestions: you can sling one of those buckled belts over a shoulder, diagonally across his body.

Excellent work matey.
You do realise, I am goin to have to come plonk myself down next to you in the office to learn how you do this modelling malarkey so good :)
A few suggestions (well actually just one), as he is a pirate I am sure he would have been in a many fights in his time - leaving him with a few obligatory scars, especially I imagine on them long ears of his, maybe a notch or two of one of his ears or some form of scarring to add more character???
Anyway I will shut up now and get back to work...
:)
Great!:buttrock: I like how you did the arms ,the belt, the trousers..well, evrything. I'm waiting for extra-cool shoes...I'd see him with sport shoes (Air max style..) rather than security boots.
Keep it up! I'm keeping an eye on this thread..

Awesome Wiro!! :buttrock:
The only thing that bothers me is the sharp definition of the arm-muscles.
Cheers!
I love it. I can't wait for it to be finished :)
Grub, JasonA, azazel: Thanks for the suggestions. He'll have a pair of goggles which will be difficult enough to fit around his ears though :D
I was thinking of hanging some strips of cloth from the goggle strap instead of a bandana.
He'll probably have a diagonal belt which will hold the gun he'll carry on his back. It all depends wether it looks too crammed or not.
gareth: yeah, the horns were remnants from the fantasy style. I don't need them any longer so off they are. They were in the way of the goggles anyhow.
m@.: hehehe, thanks man! Yeah, he won't sport heavy boots but rather some light casual ones. You might have noticed that the other pirate also has some "airwalk" style shoes on already ;)
CgMonkey: could you elaborate on exactly what disturbs you about the muscles? I wanted to define them because he is supposed to be very wirey. No fat, only skin, bones and some muscles ;)
Aros: neither can I!! :D
Wiz: lol man! You better bring some glazed donuts if you come upstairs!!!
I'll definately add notches to his ears and also scars to lips at a later stage. I just want to nail down the whole character first and be certain I got all proportions right before I start taking him apart again, hehe.
Next update in 5min...

I've finished the vest. Next I'll add chains to his neck, probably some skull motif. I might also add some pins to the vest. Then I'll get down on the shoes...sigh, I hate modelling shoes!
I've removed the forehead horns and added a goatie. I also changed his features a bit; the nose isn't as skull-like any longer and the mouth bigger and hopefully less animalistic with rounded off teeth as opposed to the old carnivorous ones.
Hope you like it!

QUESTION
when you're pushin/pullin points, do you usually work in a lowrezmode.. looking at the unsmoothed model?
or do you use a mode with a preview of the smoothed model, underneath a seethru wireframe of the lowrez.. or something along those lines?
Thanks.

Maybe make goatie bigger - it adds a lot to his personality.

Hey Arild, I've been admiring your work since I saw your pic in one 3ds max book... (3ds max ver. 3 FX/design i think) and now this char is really amazing and awesome!! Really LIKE IT man! ;)
Well and how to "piratize" him more? How about to add some kind of his "friend" on one of his shoulders? Every pirate has his own parrot on shoulder. This one should have some kind of ET (small ET in fact) sitting on his shoulder. Maybe? Well, what about a small bot instead of ET? Think it could be cool! Don't ya?
Anyways, this is masterpiece! :buttrock:

finished goggles and did some work on shoes. Added a couple of necklaces and knuckle spikes.

Dmonk: don't ask when...never ask when! :D
Tad: I prefer to work almost entirely on the lowpoly mesh, then occasionally see how it looks smoothed. Then in the end I tweak it while displaying both the smoothed and lowpoly cage.
azazel: more goaty? hehehe okay!
m@.: I could add a lose belt but I'm dreading the problems I'll have with rigging the hanging vest as it is :D
loocas: woooah, 3dsmax3...blast from the past! It's funny you mentioned a friend on his shoulder because...he is HIMSELF a friend on the shoulder of the other pirate I made, lol! But it might make for a funny picture...I'll think about it ;)
Thanks to the rest of you for your compliments!

Damn! I didn't know that man ;) so now I look as fool to others who new it! :D But... I think I'll survive that! :p ok, goggles looks perfect! Well another thing how to make him more pirate, what about to make one of his teeth golden? And I think that adding more jewlery (pirates had plenty of golden junk on them) on fingers, neck etc... should be cool? don't ya think so? Well, the jewlery don't have to be necessary golden as it is going about future space pirate, so it can be silver or just steel/titan?
Althought, great!!!
Eye like it!
You are a really good modeler, and because you are so good I just have to say what I immidiately came to think of: that scrawny looking neck could never support that head in a place with gravity as we've got here on earth. You need to beef it up a notch to make it credible. The concept scetch is more "accurate".
However I know that we sometimes want a certain "skinny" look, and you've got that down, but I personally also value believeability and in this case I think your character lacks a bit of the latter. Because the little guy looks so real I think you should consider making his neck and shoulders as real as the rest of him.
But then again: he might have evolved in free fall, 0 gravity, and in that case who needs muscles, right?
Apart from that small anatomical issue, it really is a cool character and I can't w8 to see it textured and finished! Congratulations!:bounce:

After following your creation in the challenge I am very happy to see it evolve here Wiro.:bounce:
I can recall we talked about proportions.I like the new ones. But still I would have exxagerated the leg size even more,(Even more of a squat look)but that's just a taste thing for this particular character,I understand.
The muscle definition and wirey look are very well done,he does have a strong look despite the thin look.*Goggles*,Jacket ( With speacial detailed *ZIPPER*),all are extra sweet details. Love the hands, still I would like to see even more bulbous fingers ( I am a freak for bulbous fingers,it's not your fault),so what you do have is spot on great.
*Pants,Vest, attachments*,all too are very well done, nice style there. The boots are OK,I think they need something more, something maybe like a large Cuff at the top, like the old swashbuckler boots of the bucaneers and pirates.Just tuck the pants into them. Plus the spikes just seem like they are added for the Hell of adding something ( Unless you have something more planned with them?)...I don't think they really add anything, just another taste thing I quess.
I think perhaps an added character or Sidekick for the side-kick is a good idea. Perhaps a mini-Sidekick that lives in the pocket of your sidekick, you can show him peeking out the pocket in a screen sometime down the road..;)
As for *free fall, 0 gravity*.....................Don't you just love Realistic toons,in the World of Wiro, anything is Possible.;) :p
Instead of just jewels as decorations to adorn this character, perhaps you can consider bones weaved into the character, piercings of bones jutting in the characters body, I think that could be a consideration that goes well with the whole Pirate concept, plus something a little more original. Also you mentioned skull motif earlier in this thread. Plus some trinkets of the more common kind.
All in all,I just love him,and am looking forward to more.Keep going it's another very fine creation in the making.Bravo.

WOW he looks awsome! i love looking at your work and this 1 is awsome aswell (i love the zipper)
hehe cant wait to see him finished !!!
shoey: I'd love to know how I'll rig it as well :D
I didn't like the shoes either so I chanced them now.
lildragon, eezie, Edouard, Rotamus: YAY! And there's more to come!
loocas: lol! no not at all! I didn't mention anywhere that he'd be sitting on the other pirate's shoulder, it was just something that's been on my mind.
Eye: hehehe, when I put the head on the torso I also though there is no way that neck can support the head! But it's a stylized character so I think it's ok. There is also no space for a bigger neck...it would have to be thicker than the torso and THAT would look really weird!...hmmm....worth a try? :D
Virtuoso: Yeah, I loved your input and I do take it to heart! I also have a friend at work who pretty much has the same critisizm as you (Heyho Chris!). Just for you guys I've now shortened the legs even more and also enlarged the last joint of each digit...tell me if it's bulbous enough!
I want him to look like a pirate/gun for hire/scavenger type but without going into too period clichees like buckles, eyepatches etc. I guess I just want him to look like the type that gets around and clothes himself with whatever he comes across.
I do like the bones idea though...I'll see if I can add that somewhere!
Ok, here's the next update. Shoes reworked, elbow pads added, legs shortened and fingertips enlarged. I also added some rings but they will have some ornamentation on later.

This is really a good thing that you're gonna finish him as the sidekick of your space pirate !!
The only thing that bother me on this character is his nose....it seems "unfinished" to me.....Except that, I like every thing.
Especially the jacket and the "ZIP tooth"....great details. I find the leg shorter better too......Most of all I wanted to follow this thread really close. Your work is a pleasur to see:thumbsup:

do you plan on texturing this guy?

Thanks for the comments! Yeah I aggree about the elbow spikes not quite fitting in with the rest. I'll either sharpen the other ones or blunt the elbow spikes.
Azazel: I guess you want to see him with goggles on to see how they fit? I did model the goggles around the eyes before I moved them up. I can make a render of it.
Naz: I didn't know I was that short legged :D
I'll be modeling the gun this weekend
Coco: thanks man! I see you're making huge progressions in your stuff. Sorry I don't reply much, I hardly get to reply to any gallery posts nowadays!
Stipen: Cool you like the short legs...I'll stick to them then! I hope to update this weekend.
Scott Harris: I use 3ds max 4 and Meshtools. FinalRender for those skylight renders. Yeah, he'll be textured together with the other space pirate. I think he's nearing completion now so I can get down on textures soon, woot!
Cheers again all!

So much for the "I'll work on the gun this weekend"...
Well, a coupla weeks later, here it is :)
I havent quite figured out how to attach it to the guy yet...I'll work on that later. What do you think about it? I wanted the gun to look really crappy. Like it's put together by whatever scrap he could find, and also a bit customized (the spikes).
The gun is normal size for a human but of course huge for this lil fella. The gun is all SubD except for some tiny parts.

Well, heck! This guy's all over fantastic, I really like imagining him firing the gun by resting the curved knuckle guard on the ground and using it like some big mounted machine gun.
I'd suggest modelling the eyelids half-closed, it may make the wip look sleepy, but it'll help when you move on to rigging.

Hi Wiro...........I quess with me mentioning the word "Bulbous" a million times you got my message.:p
I think the Bulbous ( There's that word again;) ) look is spot on now.It really has that look I was hoping for when looking at your current creation.
As I stated before I really think the musculature is done very well, wirey, but still with that strong look. The clothes from the vest to the Zipper are all top notch as well. The Goggles are just a must on this little guy, great. Also I like the added detail on the boots now, they seem to fit well with the rest.
Oh yes and the elbow pads are some of my favorite objects on all creations. And these you have are top rate. The shortening of the legs too added just what I thought they would, that extra fun "Exxagerated look".
And that weapon...... ...........Is just Fantastic with a capital "F". I love that extra size, that look is to die for.The exxageration for this type "Caricature" toon creation is just the best. Great curves and design,I love it.It totally belongs with him and his Big Pirate Buddy. I also like to work Sub-D and then add those tiny extra parts too.
And now for those ever lovely textures..............What's on your mind? Rusts, worn metals, deep rich wood borders on metal surfaces, leather clothing? Well I'll see what your up to soon I hope. I am off to my Private project, but will keep one eye out for your creation .That you can count on.Great work............One of my favorite CG characters of all time. And when textured..................Off the charts cool,I know that for sure. Oh yes one more thing I have to do.........."Right click save as",and off to my Elite Art folder it goes.

Look'n killer, wiro.
Love the gun. I think the "put-together-from-odd-stuff-look" comes off well. The first thing I thought when I saw it was "My God, that little bugger put that together himself...craftly lil thing, ain't he". :D
Maybe mismatch the screws a bit. You know, one philips head, one flat, one hex headed...Turned in different directions...Could help the effect.
What about a bandoleer of shells to hold the gun to him? That could be kinda cool...would fit teh marauder look he's got going too.
Keep it up, man, it's always fun to watch you work...

can't wait to see it finished
:applause:
Thanks guys! I uploaded the pic at 3am today and I already got some great replies at 10 :D
Wetterschneider: Yeah, that's a good one...I was imagining him straining himself to lift the gun but he could rest it like an MG too. I'll get back to the eyelids...I think I need to give him more expression.
Virtuoso: Hahaha, yeah you had some really good suggestions so bulbous it became! I haven't thought about the color scheme yet but I know I want to go for some nylon, rubber, plastic, maybe mixed with some leather. The spikes, gun, etc will of course be in battered and rusty metal ;)
twitchy: hehe, I've had several people comment on the hair so I might remove it alltogether. But then again it might look good when textured. Ah, i don't know, we'll see
3DZealot: Awesome! If that was your first impression of the gun then I must have done something right :D
The mismatched screws is a great idea! I'll do that next. Maybe make up some alien screws...I'm not sure they have Phillips on their planet...
As for the bandolier...I don't want to clutter him up too much and when you consider the size of the gun (it's actually normal sized, it's him that's small), the shells would be humongous!
Edouard: I don't know yet how to attach the gun to him...a bandolier or belt would push the vest around him but I want to keep a lose, airly look to it. Not to mention the pain of rigging. Argll...I'll try to figure something out...I always seem to paint myself into a corner, lol. Maybe some straps attached to his shoulders only?
Troub: hahaha yeah, he'lll tumble at the first shot!
And thanks to the rest of you too!

Great model wiro (as usual)...By the looks of the character, I'd like to see him 'talk' like Samuel L. Jackson. When you get as far as selecting dialog for test animations, keep that in mind...It'll put a cool/badass attribute that wold definatley work well when rounding out your co-pirate.

There's gotta be a way to attach that gun without having to rig the attachment...
hmmmm...
What are some ways to attach something like that...
Rope
Duct tape
Leather Straps
A paperclip chain :)
Bungie cords
Nylon webbing
A Spring?
Oooh...it could be held on like it was a napsack...that would keep his torso uncluttered...still have to rig that though...damn...
Perhaps some sort of anchor on his vest with a matching attachment on the gun.
Man, Wiro, you have a way of modeling yourself into a corner...hehe...of course, you always manage to pull it off...

First NIIICE!
I think the gun should have a single tripod leg (foldable of coarse) to rest on the ground so he don't get tired.
As for connecting maybe a spring loaded clasp on a back pak, a strap would never work. Or perhaps a little wheel barrow to carry it around in?
I don't really want to crit but the spikes on his feet don't look functional I could see them being really a hinderance running on hard surfaces. Maybe angle them up a little? Just my take.
Nice work.

Yeah!!! AWESOME!!! Really like that cartoonish style of this guy, but hope you'll go to realistic render! :xtreme:
To the color scheme. Well how about to make his trousers orange (ofcourse with dirt, mud etc... details), his vest should be dark (maybe grey), his skin? don't even know! :p well, gun should be metal, really dirty and rusty, coz it looks to be made of some junk he might found somewhere?? ;) oks... the rest is up to you Wiro :scream: (just kidding man!)...
It's really cool! And I hope my suggestions will help you?

Thaks Wiro! :) (thou I've still no clue how you could possibly be able to model like that ;) )
Ok, I've finally managed to read all posts *phew*
.... but there's not much I can say, I love that character...
oh yeah, maybe one thing: He's got very clumsy fingers, doesn't look like he'll be able to use that zipper ( sweet detail) with ease, for example. But maybe you wouldn't even need to change the shape to get rid of that look, maybe a bumpmap would do the job. Hmm... time to go to bed :D

Wiro, this character is truly inspriational sweet job man:) I love watching your modeling methods. Can't wait to see your finished product:)

Wiro, please don't reduce or remove any of the hair! It all looks mighty fine, and if people are commenting, it may be because it's a powerful detail and helps define the character so well.
That gun's huge, Wiro- ya little space guy could fire it from a tripod stand or something. Amazing modelling on the whole piece.:xtreme:

plz texture it master Wiro :xtreme:
Hi all...I just finished these renders and have to shoot off in 5 minutes so here a quick brief:
Added chips and earrings to the ears, enlarged zipper lip, added a safety pin thingymabob to his vest (thanks for the ref ZeroNeuro ;)) and changed his eyelids. I also retracted the shoe spikes. I think I'll leave the gun unattached to him as I can't find a good way for it yet. This will probably be the last update before I texture as I've begun mapping now.

Awsome as always Wiro. you still using FR? If so what are your settings for that bad boy?
BTW, i love the look of the tape around the handle of the gun.

Some wrinkles, age spots, blemishes, moles, skin blotches, some discoloration? In other words will you be living in a Photoshop universe for a long period?:p
Wonderful fully realised modeling.I love it when a model is taken the full length,no short-cuts,no compromises. When originality and intricate details are intermingled. Also I like the fact you keep things un-even just a bit, random. From the bolts/nuts to all the other details in shape and form, that crooked look, with a missing something here and there.
I think for the weapon a nice backpack/with harness would be the answer, along with this you could add compartments for added extras such as maps, med kits, bed roll,a couple blades,etc,etc...You know some way Oversized Thinga-Ma -jig,something that just cannot fit on his back................but somehow does.......exxageration at it's finest.
I look forward to this masterpiece's textures.I love him, bulbous fingers and all. ;)

If you only let the gun unattached to him because you had some work with your Snow-Strapper... snap it on his back with a big press-stud. :insane: :argh:
When this huge gun was flat on his small back, like in your first images, there is no space for anything else anyway.
:bowdown:Wolf
Excellent work... that gun is excellent! I'd like to see him with the glasses on!
looks awesome! in trademark Wiro style :D :applause:
yay!
loocas: yea, sorry about that...I was in a hurry yesterday so I didn't have time to reply. Orange was actually on my mind. I love orange and try to put it into my pics in one way or another ;)
I was thinking of giving him a mottled bluegreen skin with some patterns, orange vest (gotta try to not make it look like a life vest, lol) and possibly dark blue pants. The gun will of course recieve the mandatory battered metal look ;)
azazel: I don't really want to chip his clothes...I want him to look battle worn but not so poor he can't afford to buy some clothes :D
LordShaitan: Yeah, this was rendered in R Stage-1 beta. I just did a brute force render with 20 samples, hence the splotches...I just wanted a quick render. Brute Force is relatively slow but it's the easiest to set up.
Glad you like the tape! It took me a while to wrap it...I copied and detached the polygons of the grip, then moved them about a bit. In reality the tape should spiral around but here it's actually just a bunch of cylindrical shapes...but i don't think it's that obvious
CgMonkey: thanks a lot man, I try to make it appear detailed but without being too cluttered. It's a fine line sometimes :)
Virtuoso: Yes! Photoshop will be my domain for a while as soon as he's mapped, and I'll forget all about how to model, hehe.
I do try not to keep anything aligned. I just like the more chaotic, organic feel of things not being perfectly straight, etc.
As for a backpack...I think that would clutter him up too much with the straps covering most of his front, not to mention that I don't imagine him trekking about much. Being a pirate he and his mate would have a ship they board from.
Right now I think I'll let his larger companion carry his gun when not in use.
Wolf S.: VERY OUCH MAN!! :P
I got some pics in mind where it's not required for him to carry it so I'll keep that for later.
m@: Hehehe ok, I'll do a render with his goggles on
ceql: I didn't know I had a trademark style but glad you like it!! :D
Soooo, tonight....on with mapping and texturing!

I think the gun is a bit gay ;) but the rest is fantastic, i have never been seen such a great character
I think the poor guy has just 3 or 4 bullets in his gun... (there is no place for them..)
And the "handle" of the gun is bigger than his legs (wrong proportions???)
I would make this gun a bit smaller and he should hold it with one hand, and on his back something like a rucksack full of longer guns (like snipers or similar stuff..) or a "string of bullets" (i mean a "Kugel-Gürtel von seinem Rücken bis zur Knarre")

PLEASE!
DUDE!
This little sidekick his awesome! I love him! What can I say about the modeling!!!! WOW! When you do get your computer back could you make us some more shots with the wire frame? I love to study them to see how people work! You did put so much work in the modeling so it's worth seeing the mesh in details! Thanks a lot to make us want to push the limits of modeling Wiro! :buttrock:
Thanks a lot for your interest guys! I'm sorry I've not been able to update lately. My PC didn't survive the move and I've spent the last 2 months trying to figure out what parts to replace.
Well, I finally exchanged the last pieces I hadn't tested yet...the CPUs and it seems to be working. As soon as I've relicensed my software I'll be ready to roll again =)

Dayum Wiro, I have to say that you're one of my major inspirations as far as 3D artists go. I've been following your work for the last year and I love seeing your works in progress. It is those few images of meshes and ortho renders that you post that I find mroe valuable for learning than any finished works (tho they are amazing). keep it up man, judging from the replies, i think you're an inspiration to us all!

Hey lovely character you have going their Wiro,
I love all the stuff i have seen of yours to date!
Uhm, i do agree with Benedikt that the scale of
the gun is a bit weird and even though it might be
funny to see this guy, at some point, trying to fire
a human's gun, i would love to see a different kinda
weapon for him.
When i first checked out the first few renders,
i automatically got the feeling that this guy was going
to be extremely agile and able to run like the dickens!
So in that sense the huge-ass gun is cool, but would hinder
any kind of the lighting fast body manouvers i had imagined.
Sorry this is just what was going through my mind.
I was thinking like an assortment of little magic daggers,
and mini grappling/morninging-star type projectiles that were
easy to carry.
My 2c, but again this character design rocks no matter what
weapon this guy is holding.
Lovely!
Keep up the wickedness Wiro!
