Hello everybody

This is a great challenge, and this appends very well cause I started to model Bruce Willis
some days ago to make a tribute to Die Hard ! This is (in my opinion :)) the best action
film ever made...

I decided to make this very intense scene from the film, that resume very well the John
McClane Character :

http://www.studiohardwork.com/nico/DieHard1.jpg

It will be a really simple environment, as you can see, that will focus on the head.

I've already began the head as I explained, so don't be nervous on the fact that the Bruce
head is a little advanced yet, I will post later the WIP screenshots to legalize my entry
:rolleyes::)

Hey mate, i dont want to be an ass, but i think you will hv to start over and redo everything from zero, dont think u can use any material you did b4 the comp starts, since we cant even use a base mesh, i donno if i were you, i would check that with roberto first.
looking foward to your entry cuz bruce willis kicks ass, and die hard 1 rocks.

well he said he started a few days ago.... and I think the challenge started a few days ago...so I guess it really depends on how far he's gotten....and how far "a few days ago" really is.....

Well, I started 2 weeks ago, in my free times, and I haven't planed to put so soon my WIP, but when I saw that John McClane was one of the Icons selected, I thought that it could be a good idea to put here my steps of my project. And this challenge will be closed in more than 1 month, and I have a lot of work to do, so... Just wanted to be honest with the other entries (great starts everybody :)).
So here is a panorama of my WIP on the modelisation of the head :
http://www.studiohardwork.com/nico/WIP1.jpg

And here is where I am now
http://www.studiohardwork.com/nico/WIP2.jpg

Comments welcome !

Must go throught Zbrush now to precise the model and get normal/displacement Map.
And I althought have to deal with the fact that Bruce had lot more hairs on his scalp in 1988
:D

--PS-- References were found on Google Image on a site related by a little thumbnail that I clicked, and found great rez images on it but I didn't saved the address ...

And the Wire

Will start the Zippo, don't have the time for now to start the body, just want to have fun for the moment.... :)

Awesome, dude. Nice work.

There's something a bit off with his nose. For me, that's his trademark. It seems a little skinny and the corner (is that what you call it?) half way down the bridge seems a bit low. Could be the angle though.

The Zippo Wire

Thanks a lot for the crits.
I think that you're right on the fact that is nose is too skinny, but I thought that was enought for now, because I have to make is facial expression, and it will affect the nose, so the principal thing is to have a good wire to be free with modification.

Have fun with your entry too.

Ok, now starting the body shape :

http://www.studiohardwork.com/nico/WIP3.jpg

I'll just have to concentrate on the arms, hands, fingers, the rest can be much less detailled.
I wil certainly try the new nCloth of Maya to make the "marcel" shirt

The head right now seems a bit narrow, also the top of the head has the strange bulge to it at the front, maybe work on that a bit more? Looking forward to your updates :)

Hello world !

I've nearly achieved the head of John McClane, in the final expression that made me really crazy :banghead: ... He does some kind of distorted face in this scene, and I moved a LOT of point of my basic neutral shape to obtain something like that :

http://www.studiohardwork.com/nico/WIP5.jpg
And the wire :

http://www.studiohardwork.com/nico/WIP6.jpg

Rewired the forehead to add the wrinkles of his expression.

Also made a texture work in Photoshop, handpainted map, and did a little bit of sculpting on the neutral mesh in Zbrush for the skin aspect, to get a NormalMap :

http://www.studiohardwork.com/nico/WIP4.jpg

So, I hope you like it, critics are welcome, cause my eyes are bleeding for now... :argh:

In your test-composition he looks like he's screaming, but in the movie it's more like physical strain that makes his mouth open a bit. Don't take it wrong, just trying to help :)

Thank you for posting, all advices are welcome, and you're right, I think that I should move up the upper lips, like an expression of something disgusting, I think it's more like this that I'll catch the good facial look.
Will post soon more updates.

Hello everybody,

Here is an update, made the top of the body, didn't detaillled the lower parts (this image is a quick copy/paste of my work area, if you want me to post a closeup of some part, ask for it :) ) :

http://www.studiohardwork.com/nico/WIP7.jpg

I'll pose the character for the next step... Hands will be a nightmare....

yo dude your moving alot faster than me, your producing some good stuff but i think the head still needs some more work, i think your loosing the likeness slightly in the new facial pose! If i get round to actually completing his head i will probably rig it so that i can pose his face nicely using blend shapes but we shall see how much time I have! Keep working at it though dude, you still got plenty of time to get it spot on :P :D

I totally agree with you when you say that I loosed the likeness, that's why I prefer for now finding the final pose of the total character, to get it back to Zbrush and have a better look on the general result. thank you for the comments.

"come out to the coast, we'll get together, have a few laughs."

sorry, no real crit. Chris already gave his about the expression. like you said, the upper lip just needs a slight snarl.

i dig the lighting on the duct. spot on.

I've posed the character today, and now, I've got this in my work area :

http://www.studiohardwork.com/nico/WIP8.jpg

http://www.studiohardwork.com/nico/WIP9.jpg

I saw on other threads some guys who made the hair in polymesh, and I thought that could be a good idea to do that too, but I'm not so sure now... I made him some kind of "banana" hair cut ...

The rendering crashes for the moment, I didn't cleaned enought my scene... I'll post render tests as soon as possible :wip:

Thank you robo3687 :wavey:
I did the rigging of the full model first, but that was a real nightmare to get a good shape with the total rig. So I did rigs for little parts (hands, arms, body), posed them, and then reconnect them. If you have to do an as deformed position as mine, I give you that advise. If not, do a simple rig with just bones, no need to add Ik controls, FBIK, or whatever, you'll get a better control of the shape with just bones (if you do not plan to animate of course)

AndreKling
03-30-2007, 12:35 PM
you got me curious, what is FBIK? and how do u set and use it?
Andre

Youplaboum
03-30-2007, 03:07 PM
FBIK is the shortcut for Full Body IK, it's the control generator of maya who creates the controllers for a skeleton. It's very simple to use and to create : see the maya docs (type FBIK in the search section), it's very well explained. First label your joints, and then create the controllers, it's really simple.
It works very well for posing a character, but I don't use it for animation, it's too much constrained...

AndreKling
03-30-2007, 03:27 PM
ah thnks man, i heard that maya has this kind of ik solution, since im new to maya, i havent tried yet.
Your model is looking great, keep it up, want to see it rendered.

Hi !

Sorry for the long time before this update, I had some work to do, and I had to find some free time to advance...
So, here, I've remade the overall shape of the head to get a best look like of bruce willis (it's not enought, but it's a little better). I also made some SSS material test on it, and worked the light of the scene. There's no final gather, no GI, no HDRI, just MR raytracing and 6 lights with attenuation.

http://www.studiohardwork.com/nico/WIP11.jpg

Now I'll have to work on textures a lot more (the shirt is horrible, yes  ), make a little bit of sculpting, and find a way to make the hair much more nice (really, I don't know how :hmm: ...)

Little update on the head :
-Lowered it
-scaled it
-reshaped it (again) for the likeness

I'd like to know what you think of it, see you soon :buttrock:
