View Full Version : Spaceship: Battleship Yamato
JeffPatton 03-05-2003, 08:47 PM I've decided to actually try and model somthing complex....atleast for me! Anybody else remember this cartoon from back in tha' day? I plan on taking my time on this and I want to put alot of detail into this model. Here are my first shots after a nights work. The smoothing of the hull is killing me, but I will get it...one way or another.
I dread the texturing phase, but hey, thats a LONG ways out.

Aaaaah the ol Argo if I remember correctly.... boy that cartoon sure brings back some memories ... 1981 wow so long ago now. Thats was a cool show with alot of neat design ideas. If i remember correctly, the US release was altered from the original Japanese original because of the references to nuclear war... anyways, old starblazers trivia for ya :p
not a bad start so far, although you might want to find better blueprints. Looks like you're gonna have a hell of a time with the details with that for reference. I think Haylcon made a scale model of this ship which was pretty good, should see if you can get it.
The hull looks kinda lumpy so far, are you boxmodeling this or doing it with surfacing? Anyways keep going, it'll be fun to watch..
PS A guy named Don Gaiser made a similair model (although stylized), you should try and get in touch with him about reference material, he could probably help you out :)

small update. Managed to get the lumps out. Now I have to figure out how to cut circles into my mesh for some of the details....back to work.

Is it just me or does that thing look SUSPICIOUSLY darn like the Soyokaze from the Irresponsible Captain Tylor series? :curious: Been wondering that for a while.

Huh? Never heard of that one....but I will research that as well because the images I'm using as references to model this thing leave alot of detail to the imagination. But then again, I have found SOOOO many different Yamato's I dont know which one to model! Some have wings, some dont....geezzzz.

you can go here for some other blue prints of the yamato as well as ships from that series.

Very nice start and the above blueprint ref is a good one for Star Blazers craft. The type 17 was designed by Syd Mead and there is a hard to find plastic kit of it. The standard version you are doing is still found in hobby stores and on places like ebay.
Look forward to seeing it come along.

This second one shows a back view of the ship (it's in the foreground.... that bigass thing it's facing off with in the background is Ru Baraba Dom's Raalgon battleship... :D )
And here's her.. um... distinguished captain.... being fed a pink banana!
