she's one of the most ( what I consider ) beauiful woman in the acting business....I hope I can capture that beauty in my model.....this is more of a placeHolder since I don't have anything to show just yet...and I'm trying to makeTime for the challenge......I'm still deciding on Alien 3 or Alien: Resurrection Ripley.....

Hi Binder, looks like Maya, when I have tried poly to poly in the past - my normals and vertices get all tangled up, and it seemed like I could never get it to smooth properly.....can't wait to see the final after your "David" model - this is going to be top notch.

hey Fess, sup man?!....here's another small upDate...I'm having problems finding good references for her....the ones I did find are from different periods in her life.....so it looks like I'll have to rent or buy the movie to compensate...

...sideView looks like herHead is too big...or ears are too small...even tho sideView matches the reference I'm using....likeNess coming soon, lol...

:D.....thank you myFriend...I use to do everything boxModeling style...but about a year ago...( for the David challenge actually :) ) ...I decided to try planar modeling... ( which is how I did hisHair ) and everSince, I have not look back....:)


your right about the skimpy stuff...:D ...that's exactly what I was thinking about putting her in ( the one she had on at the end in the first Alien ) .....but that's if I get the time to do a fullBody.....:shrug:

don't think I'll be doing anyAlien character tho....not that I don't want too...time is just something I don't have much of these days.....

How are you planning on doing hair?

Ears are good. I alway have trouble doing the minutia ear detail.
Man, with studying & work, I wish I had the time to participate in a challange. :sad:

Hey Binder, typology is looking good so far! My model also had the frankenstein type forehead at the base mesh stage... are you going to be doing some sculpting on this one? Look forward to ur updates.

Binder, you have a very nice organized mesh here, but I cannot say much about the form yet, I need to see some shaded views without the wires, to see if the likeness is going well

I have a tip though, try to model more from what you see, from the form, and not the wires, in xsi I work with two perspective cameras, one for editing, and another without wires for preview, and no ortographic view at all, I don't even use a background picture when I'm modeling, I work entirely from observation, perhaps I do this because I use the box method but I have a reason for not doing so, the photo has lens distortion, thus your model will carry this distortion and it will not look right in the perspective view, no matter how hard you try to place things over a photo, lens distortion is the first enemy of a 3d artist when sculpting heads

Another tip is to check your model by some rules, most rules are made to be broken, but this one just works most of the time for me: the eye line is on the center of the head (on an adult)

I can agree somewhat with what "whileYouWereArt" says .
But to me what's bother is the area around the ear . it's look a little messy
could we see a shaded pic of the face cus it's hard to tell the likeness like that .

thank you veryMuch whileYouWereArt...to tell you the truth...I know this rule...:) ...but the reference I was using said otherWise....but as you've said::

lens distortion is the first enemy of a 3d artist when sculpting heads hearing that, some things makes sense now.....I'll try yourMethod to only model via observation and w/out any orthoView to see if it gets anyBetter....I'm in the process of trying out the likeNess, where as until this point, I've only been trying to get the forms down....much appreication goes out to you for the tips my friend....I'll put them to goodUse....soon I'll post some shaded only views for C&Cs.....

I haven't posted an upDate for awhile, so here's one.....she's a tough one man, but everyTime I work on her, I find new ways to get closer to her ( her likeNess that is )

C&C are always welcome and appreicated.....things I know off hand are the chin, foreHead, and herFace looks alil tooSharp.....I hope Roberto doesn't kill me since I'm using refs from A3 and not from A2...:D....but I'm hoping to convert it back to her youngerSelf somehow.....as for the hair, I think I might go the poly and apply texture/opacity route....I don't have much knowHow on Maya's built in hair or fur....so I'm not sure if I would have the time to figure it out to produce something worth posting....

looks like its gettin closer a couple of things i noticed were

- nose is a little sharp
- eyes seem to be open a tad too wide
- and the area between the nose and the mouth needs to be longer

here's a MB pass...this is about 4hrs from my last upDate.....I haven't really touched the side too much...but I decided to post it anyway...:) ....that's the reference I'm going by for the front...having a lil trouble with the eyes...but I think it's closer than my last post...so that's good....:)

Binder,

I did some painting over your model, but those lines are not correct either, it is just a way to show you the areas I'm talking about

first, there is something wrong with the whole eye socket area, especially in the side view, I recommend that you take some time to study the bone structure of this area, try to find some skull references to understand what is going on underneath the skin there, the same goes to the cheekbones, those shapes are very complex, so you need to be very careful, you need do get the shape correct for all angles, I recommend modeling mainly from the 3/4 view, and always looking for the silhouette from all angles, because when you match the shape from one angle alone... sometimes this destroys the silhouette from other angles.. that's why anatomy knowledge is important, you don't copy the model, you reconstruct the model, from the inside to the outside


In the side view, the shape of the head is wrong, and there is something wrong with the placement of the nose and eyes, also the neck muscle should be straight

excellent advice WhileYouWereArt, I'll do that...this upDate was done over the weekEnd ( before I read yourPost ) ....but the next one will have what you've mentioned.....

it's a goodLooking head, but it just doesn't look like ripley :sad:........notYet...:) .....

but maybe part of that is b/c bothSides are still symmetrical and no imperfections have been added....so who knows....

hey binder, here is the crit you asked for :)

first, i think you have the eye really off. the bone around the eye socket makes a distinct shape no matter whos head it is. instead of trying to follow her perticular face i would say that you should first look up more references for female eyes. also the eye lids should have a visible consistent thickness. after you have a basic anatomy of the face down then you can change proportion to match her face. also becareful how you judge the shape from a photo since many features can be misleading due to lighting and SSS that occurs in real life. so its best to get lot more references of her even thought they are not from that movie or time.

the area i marked blue should be sticking out little more to make out the shape of the eye socket.

the second feature that looks really off is the lower lip and the area between it and the chin. there is actually not that much dent between the lower lip and the chin in her face. the chin also looks a little too wide.
finally, you asked about the eye placement. i took one of my models and tweaked it close to segourney's face. HERE is the screenshot. (http://www.fx81.com/cgtalk/fm1.jpg) hope this will demonstrate better what i mean. also in this screenshot you can see what i meant about the lower lip and the area between it and the chin. hope this helps and keep at it.:thumbsup:

I hate to say this, but I'm throwing in the towel on this one...:sad:.....this challenge has made me realized that I know obsolutely nothing about the humanFigure...( not to mention my lack of time ).....but it has raised my level of understanding for the humanForm, so I didn't come out emptyHanded..:)..mostLikely I'll finish it afterwards....

....much love goes out to all those that are still running the race...I'll be there to vote....

This is the main reason why I don't particapate in these challanges. I know the fustration of being stuck in the middle of a project.

Good idea to take your time & try to slowly finish, its a great learning experience.
