View Full Version : Hope this time someone will actually look at it ;)
Hi there! No question this time, i just wanted to show a WIP that got a little "snowed in" in the normal wip forum. Since its made with cinema 4d i thought id post it here, perhaps there r more people who will like it in here ;) I have updated it a bit since my post in the other forum.
Anyway, its a 3d version of Blackarts cool Fangs painting. Its not done yet, so i was hoping that some of my fellow c4d users could give me some nice tips on how to improve. The background isnt done by a llongshot btw :)
So what u think?

yup works fine here.
for those using ie ya can right click and open in new window and works fine.
looks ok man...whats it for? personal or work etc
unfortunately don't know anything about Blackarts cool Fangs painting...so can't use as a reference....
hopefully someone can give crits comments....
it opens up just fine for me. Looks nice kinda reminds me of Squids gargoyle. Is it going to be animated? If i were you i would work on the textures adding noise and all that kinda thing to give it a real worn out look.

sorry just thought...not sure if you can do this on a mac version...sorry guys might need to copy/paste link.:wip:
I dont know about animating it, since i wouldnt have a clue of how to animate the cloth and how to make sure all the "ornaments" move along with it ncely..perhaps u could give me some advice on how to do this? The lack of noise is also a bit because the painting has a rather clean look as well.
Btw, blackarts "Fangs" painting is in the 2d section :)

worked for me. I think it is looking great! I green "rays" are still in progress. That would probably be easier and have more control in after effects or as a seperate pass but you probably already thought of that. How far along are the textures. They are looking a little plastic. If you still working on them then you know that. If not I would at least put some grundge in the diffuse channels. Can you post the painting? It is looking great.

looks pretty cool, but mabye you shouldn't copy it exactly, and instead put something from yourself in it ;)
just a thought
The ray thingie, after doing it in c4d i indeed see that it would look better as a post effect. The plastic look..i know..the problem is, im not really good at texturing, UVs never worked for me, so i tried to do it all with shaders..but they indeed turnedc out rather plastic.. Ill try messing with some noise etc, create a more worn out look, or at least make it less plastic looking.
tnx for the comments u guys!
Btw, link to Blackarts "fangs" thread!
Here (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=47013)
the plastic looks is reather simple to fix its really all in the specular. change the specular and the plastic looks should disapear.
true, but the thing is, on Blackarts painting, the armor pads were rather shiny, so i thought, upping the specular would give it a nice shine..but it also gave it that plastic look, which of course wasnt intended..
Ill be giving it a try tho!
Btw: Joost81: ive thought of that, but didnt do it, since i wasnt quite sure how Blackarts would feel about that.

SLA 2d noise shader in the diffuse channel and pic FBM. Turn up the gobal scale and in the diffuse mix turn it down to about 35 %. This may get you started.

cool thanks for the link xeno.
i would like to be able to see his fangs better.
also did you use the bolt plugin for that...just out of interest:thumbsup:
Ill post a closeup when i get home, but i havent used any plugin !
(im afraid i dont even know what bolt does exactly at the moment... )
Ok, here is a link to a closeup, im gonna post a couple of "improvements" as well, as soon as theyre finished, if thats ok ;)

Ok, ive tweaked the materials a bit, roughened things up.. Also played around with the lighting a little. I hope at least some of the plastic look is gone now :) Also worked a tiny bit more on the background!

only one sugestion from me.
CELL SHADE IT!!! CELL SHADE IT!!! CELL SHADE IT!!!
Looks Cool:thumbsup:
tnx! Ive tried a cellrender, but i didnt really like it, but perhaps ill post it later :D
Ok, since i like a good laugh, here is a cellrender..but i told ya i didnt like it!
http://www15.brinkster.com/sgtech/jpg/cellrender.jpg
Are you using C4ds Defalt cell renderer? Because after looking at the work of guys who really love to do toon shaders, it apperas that they dont really use the defalt renderer.
yea, thats why i didnt like it, im not using any cellshaders or something like that!
But do u all think the plastic look is a bit less now?

If you want to dive deeper into the fields of toonshading, here are two links. The first is a tutorial by Naam:
http://www.xs4all.nl/~naam/cartoonrender.html
The second one is to mdme_sadie's Cinema page. There you can find a tutorial as well as 'shades of cell', a SMA based toonshader:

hope that helps!

xeno: fangtweak2 is cool and certainly an improvement....i think the cell render as you mention would take more time to sus out...but not out of the question.
Alright, here is yet another update, (u guys must be pretty tired of me by now :P) I started with the background, but i dont really like it, even tho of course its far from finished. On the original painting, in the background there were al kinds of fog like flames and fireeffects going on, but i cant get them to work for me realistically. Ive tried some pyrocluster stuff, but i dont really know that so its not helping me..volumetric lights also dont really do the trick.. Am i missing something perhaps?
All crits will be eagerly awaited :D

looking better just work work work on your textures thats all that is holding this pic from being totally totally cool
- i see -
so the link is a model done by you after the black arts "fang" image right?
looks like you did a really good job xenon :) - i bet you could draw a figure as good as that and then make a model after it no? - i hope you try that, it would be really interesting to see!
noen
Im glad u like it so far! Well, even though i can draw some stuff, im not at blackarts level by far at this point, but i have no doubt that i will do one of my own drawings soon!
I have a question aagain tho.. I think that i also need to do some DOF in my render, but i have no idea how to get the right settings. Would anyone know a good setting for this? I have tried it a couple of times and adjusted some settings, but i hardly noticed any differences. Are there any specific setttings i need to keep in my mind?
Tnx in advance!

try using photoshop ( if you have it ) to blur out sections to give the illusion of DOF if you find that c4d's settings are a bit weird. thats what I tend to do as I find it gives more control.. well for stills anyway :)
As always check out
http://www.peranders.com/c4d8/
there is a good tutorial on DOF there
tnx for the link! Im gonna check that one out!
Alrighty, another (of course :P) update from me! Ive done some work on background, i just dont know, its almost like its "impossible" to capture the feel of the painting..what do u think?
http://www15.brinkster.com/sgtech/jpg/fangalmost.jpg
btw: since i still didnt quite get the right result from using DOF, i blurred the background manually, and now i notice that i havent been precise enough when blurring out the background, sorry for that!
whoa i think that this guy is floating man.
the blurred background is only between his wings leading to a really really weird look.
the wingss and the back ground are almost the same color which makes the whole thing stick together so you cant really focus on the dude himself. try changing the background pic so it doesnt only appear between his wings
Thanx for the comment! The thing is, in the original painting, there is a wall behind him, thats what the " not blurred" part of the background is, the wall thats behind him in the original image.. Even apart from that, do u think that perhaps my lighting is (completely) wrong?
