Adobe Photoshop, Body paint 3d and Zbrush. My liking is Photoshop, ease to use, and cool features.Just a great application to use.

#1 Photoshop, cause I know it the best.
#2 BodyPaint, Mostly for quickly fixing seams and odd edges.
If you can hold on for a bit you should look at Zbrush 3. The painting methods they seem to have added look like the will have a new 3D paint champ.

here's a plug in for photoshop that allows you to paint in 3D but the model must already have UVs http://www.electriciris.com/
Thanks, I just heard about it too. I wonder how "robust" it really is? I mean, I used Bodypaint and Deeppaint, it it seems to me a 3D paint package is some seriously serious stuff (difficult to bring to life I guess) - Maya's paint tools for example are total crap compared to the abovementioned software. I love Bodypaint for example, and I have a hard time imagining a tool that could top it. even if Photoshop is fantastic, I can only imagine this Enzo as a clumsy... slow... weird thing, right there, inside Photoshop :D ok, so are there any Enzo users out there who can share some of the Enzo experience?

blender 3d has 3d texture painting in it, but it's not quite at the level that I'm looking for. Does anyone know any other free software with good quality 3d texturing - preferably with brush shapes (for doing hair).

All mentioned so far are great. You cant beat Photoshop or Painter. The new release of CS has the abilitiy to have models right in there, BodyPaint style. Like others have mentioned the new ZBrush is going to rock.
Just get out there and work :). U just starting out dodgy?
