View Full Version : Indoor lighting with Daylight system?

Hi

I am creating an enclosed neolithic monument that is lit through a 200" hole in the roof, like a skylight. I have to show the outside of this building as well as the inside. For the outside I've used a daylight system in max 9 which works great.

For the inside the daylight system doesn't light it enough through the hole in the roof, I thought this would be possible but can't figure out what I need to change without drastically increasing render times. Final Gather and Indirect Illumination are used but on low settings. Any ideas?

The other option is to have a separate light rig for the interior.

Thanks for any advice.

The first thing that I would try is adjusting the exposure control. And I would not check "daylight". If that doesnt work you can supplement the daylight system with a mental ray omni
light just outside the opening.

Hi there,

Good advice. Boosting exposure control is tricky as this scene shows an animation of the sun position based on the time of the day. Early morning shots look fantastic outside the building but inside its pitch black still (with exterior daylight off).

Through trial and error I found that reducing the GI decay from 2.0 to 1.75 really made a big difference and light was spilling in through the skylight so that is my first point of tweaking.

Hopefully today I will have the lighting nailed and if it comes to it, will add extra Omni's if GI isn't coping.

Cheers

Actually your right. I thought I had tried turning of "Daylight" in exposure but must have missed it. Just tested again to be certain and its working nicly.

Thanks

MmikeE,

I have a new problem, wonder if you could help?

The building i have is cone shaped. Light coming in through the skylight seems to be gathering very strongly at the bottom at the far edge causing bright blooming.

Is this because the lighting is simply bouncing back and forth more due to the sloping roof and flat floor? If so is there any way I can reduce it to more natural levels? The rest of the room is ok though.

Thanks

Are you using Photons ?

Yes, GI and FG are both on. I will test with just FG and see how it comes out.

Hey Anim,

Turning off the 'exterior' flag with the daylight system
is not generally a recomended practice. At some point
the sheer intensities of the light values will come back
to bite. Better working with it on and work to get your
photons reaching down into your scene.

Have you tried animating your exposure control?
