This is a quick 2-second animation I started yesterday. I want to get some action scenes in my reel and thought this short one would get the ball rolling. I have started adding breakdowns and playing with the arcs and so forth. I used a video reference but only as a jumping off point. This still has a way to go. I would really appreciate any critiques! Thanks

hey thats pretty cool just some stuff that looks funny to me:

-seems like when ur punching u would be twisting more, the torso seems really stiff
-the punches it self seems too linear everything seems to move at the same time, maybe play around with the keyframes a little there

thats all i got lol see if thats any help, btw those models urs? they look awesome :D

my humble 2cent-n00b opinion if i may:

like noobie allready pointed out that fight looks a lot too stiff
or even staged. in real life action you'd definately have to stage
something like that, but since it's 3d you can just let them punch
the s** out of each other, no?

i'm not too sure if the green ninja dodges the first punch or not.
if not, than you'd have broken a serious law in action lines. to
make the punch carry weight the ninja would definately have to
go the other way, i.e. his body has to counter the weight of
the punch.
when the green ninja tries to strike his first punch
his hand freezes in midair for a frame until the blue counters
it. that makes it look as if he intentionally stopped his punch.
..but i guess the major problems lie in the overall staging. for example,
the last punch of the blue ninja. why would he punch in middair,
when the other guy has been dodging since his last punch?
i mean, he's a ninja he should be able to respond (in this case
not even so rapid) actions.
also the body mechanics seem not very clean. for
example in the first 15 frames, what is the torso of the blue
ninja doing? is he danciN' the boogy?

i would recommend trying to animate something less complex
to start off with. but either way - nice going! keep it up!

Hey Chiodo,
Those are great points. Thanks a lot. The green ninja does actually dodge the first punch and I was wondering if that was clear. Good to know it is not so I can go in and make it more obvious. A lot to do on this one but I wanted to get feedback early. Great comments on the rest. I do need to go in and fix those back arcs on the blue on at the start. But perhaps I am onto another fine ninja boogie woogie musical.

I almost did not post this because it is so early - one day of work - but it is good to get feedback from the get go.

Thanks
Chris

Hey looking good:

The first punch, not sure if it makes contact or not, and looking at the other throws, its too fast. Seems like toward the end, you are going for realizm versus a snappier type animation. I would go with either one or the other, and seems you have more of a natural feel to it then stylized =) I think its coming along well, focus on timing more like when to slow down the action and when to speed it up, that will help break up any unintended rhythem...

Um, no offense, but are these boxers or ninjas? They need to be Kung-Fu'ing it out with martial arts and katanas man, not throwing generic punches at each other! But I digress, it's your project. As for C&C, it seemed to me that none of the punches landed home, it looked like every one was dodged to me.

Thanks a lot for the comments moose2k1 and CaptainBarbosa - and the earlier ones

I could not agree with you more. I think I have had a chance to add in some contrast in speed and I think it is working better. Hopefully all looks to be in the same style now. Still a ways to go. CaptainBarbosa- you are correct - I have ninjas fighting in a Bar room brawl. My main concern was to show some action and I did not want to use a generi or lowman rig. I wanted something with some meat on its bones. I agree that would make since to have them NINJA but that was not the over-all goal on this one.

Thanks a lot for your comments they really helped out.

I would really appreciate some more comments on my update.

The way they throw their weight around is much better, but it still looks like every blow is evaded.

hey wilson its looking better but i almost feel like the green ninja should be attacking back in a few places cause the blue guy pretty much leaves himself open to attack when he anticipates back before the big swing forward and then after the upercut he basically has his whole side wide open but the green guys just still dodging no retailation

btw, u mind posting the files for that rig up? or the links to it anyway? wanna do some test animations with that model it looks fun

Thanks again for the comments.

CaptainBarbosa
The green ninja actually never does get hit he dodges them all. May not of been the best choice but at this point I am sticking with it. Thanks for your input because it is important to make sure it is clear what ever is happening.

noobie
I finally had a sec to track down the rig. Check out:
http://www.3dfiggins.com
They have a huge rig section. The Ninja is in Rig Sest 3

I actually with I had used a more generic rig because I did not go with Ninja style fighting. I still hope in my reel in a 3 second clip mixed in with the rest it will get the point across that I can animate this style and not that they are not fighting like ninjas.

Thanks for the comments.
