i have a quick question, the 30" monitors i've been looking at (dell and samsung) have DVI-D (Dual link) listed as their "input Connectors". This may sound stupid, but does this mean i would have to use both monitor outputs from my gfx card? i'm planning on getting a Gforce 8800GTX so it should be up to scratch for the display :) but i'd like to be able to ultimatly run a second smaller monitor as well, so thought i should check.

atm i'm leaning towards the samsung (http://www.samsung.com/PressCenter/PressRelease/PressRelease.asp?seq=20061010_0000293416)
anyone got an opinion on it?

also as a quick secondary question (since your already here :p ) can someone tell me if there is some way to get the Xbox 360 VGA cable addon (http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/x/xbox360vgahdcable/) to work with either of these monitors? I have a digital to analogue converter that came with my old Gforce that i use to plug my second monitor's VGA into the DVI output, would something like this work here?
thanks

ah ha!
so shortly after posting this question i found the answer :p
here (http://www.ubergizmo.com/15/archives/2006/02/dell_3007wfp_on_dell_2001fp_action_8_megapixel_desktop.html)
But i am still looking to see if i could run a 360 through this monster
and btw the display setup in the linked article blew me away, i now have a new goal lol.

Dell 30" is the best monitor I used , I love it. But you wont be able to connect your 360 or anything to it , It just has dual dvi connection thats it.

i just came across an article that said

You can’t hijack the DVI ports to plug VGA connectors into the monitor (or for that matter any DVI plug on any monitor) with an adapter either, because the DVI standard doesn’t allow it. The little pins around the flat connector of a DVI connector on video cards that carry the red, green, blue and horizontal synchronisation signals for VGA backwards compatibility are blocked off on the DVI connectors of monitors. You can use HDMI connectors with a converter, but as a rule you’re limited to digital connections.

so that answers my VGA question.
ah well thats ok, it was more of an added bouns than anything else.
but now if the rumored HDMI 360 comes out... :p

You might like to check out HP's 30'er: HP LP3065
Has 3 inputs, and according to reviews, better colour rendition than the Dell.

yeah i came accross it in my searches, but one question, what on earth would i use three DVI inputs for??
right now i think i might go with the samsung, but it depends on wether i can get something else cheaper on ebay or something.
samsung atm seem to be the best price vs quality. We'll see, got a month to decide ;)

I agree, it would be nice instead to have component, and other analogue inputs, which don't seem to appear on these 30'er beasts.
You can always want to hook 3 pc's on one big 30' mon though...

After a quick read at a monster thread in hardforums, (http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1110847) I think they mention that the Samsung has relatively low brightness, and that its recomended use is with a hood (Samsung itself suggests the use of hood:sad:)...

I saw that HP 30" display at GDC this year. INCREDIBLE.

You could do no wrong picking that up.

But also take a good look at something like this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16889234001). Not as fancy, but good and cheap. If it carried a DELL logo it would probably have its own forum.

aii, the plot thickens..

well looking at all 3 monitors side by side (spec wise)
Samsung (http://www.samsung.com/PressCenter/PressRelease/PressRelease.asp?seq=20061010_0000293416)
Dell (http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/3007wfp_hc?c=au&cs=aubsd1&l=en&s=bsd)
HP (http://www.hothardware.com/viewarticle.aspx?articleid=936)

it seems that samsung is the brightest, at 400cd/m2 as opposed to 300cd/m2 for the hp and dell.
i think that hood being talked about in the forum you linked is for their new LED backlit monitor, but even then the idea was it was included only for gfx pro's who needed it.

in fact the samsung has the fastest response time too 6ms GTG as opposed to 8ms for the others.

And seeing as i have yet to see any onf these HP monitors in online stores over here (australia) i think the samsung is looking the best.

Do any of these 30'ers pivot 90 degrees to portrait mode like the smaller 20' ones do?
So in the future one could have two of them side to side sitting upright with a total desktop of 3200x2560 ( a squarish one, but Big)

cooperunionstud: nah i've rulled out apple, seems to be basically the same as the others (in fact not quite as good) for about $1000 more.

evanfotis: no you can't, the stands are not high enough. you could probably wall mount them side by side, but i dont think it would really make a great window size/layout for up close PC work imho. too tall, for display purposes (at conventions or meetings etc) it would be fine.

Those screens look great. I wonder if the contrast is enough though.

It would be interesting to see some photos of them in use. :)

I got this in my feed:
"Now to the main question. Anyone have any home shots of these badboys in use? :) "
I bet plenty of cgtalker do have these beasts.
I know of a few first hand.
Why don't you check out the the photo of workstation/rig threads?

well the marketing buzz says they have a contrast ratio of 1000:1 :eek::eek:
whatever that means...but damn i'm sold :D

do a search for any of the monitor's names followed by "review" in google. should turn up pleanty of pics of them working.
