I've been trying to dig into the Soft|Image XSi experience package, and I'm wondering exactly what the limitations are for import/export.

So far, I haven't found a way to import any of my models from max... Am I correct in assuming that all materials used must be native to the demo program, or am I missing something?

The program seems spectacular so far, and, hopefully I'll learn it well enough to justify making the investment in the full version, but I would be greatly appreciative if someone could steer me straight on what I can expect to be able to do/not do with the demo.

Cheers!

basically the only limit is the interaction with the outside world (the exception being the capability to load full XSI scenes to check out all the tutorials and scenes around without problems).

this means import/export, scripting and some add-on' .

It's not really that way because Softimage felt it was mandatory to annoy other app users, it's because the exp version, out of respect to whoever invested in the full or even only edu licenses, must be completely non-productive for anything but selfenclosed works.
btw it's SOFTIMAGE|XSI, the pipe goes between the company and the program names :)

Thanks for the clarification!

I'm not terribly annoyed by the lack of import/export functionality, after all, the cost to learn the program for me so far is somewhere in the $5 range, a vast improvement over what its cost me to learn max (a figure I will not revisit due to the apoplexy caused in consideration of class time, license fees, plug-ins, etc.).

Hopefully I can afford the full version sometime soon, but for now, I just couldn't justify the expenditure on a program that I don't have the experience to utilize properly.

Thanks again!
