View Full Version : Character: Young Girl
phoenix2k 03-05-2003, 12:11 PM Well, this is my first Head, and also my first organic model...
It was originally an elven girl, but one, the ears don't show, and 2 the hair is too messy for an elf, so i'll mark her as a human girl instead :)...

hey, thx for the comment :)
the hair was done in shag hair...
the eyes being to far apart probably comes from my trying to achieve an elvish look... :)...

The nose and mouth look pretty good, but the jaw has some strange depressions on either side of the mouth.
Elvish or not, there's something strange about the eyes. Generally, you should have more of the top of the iris covered and the bottom visible. This helps prevent that "deer in the headlights" look.
Also, I can't tell but it looks like the ear is not attached? You'll need to post some other views (without hair) to get more specific replies.

Here are some simpler, untextured renders of her...
The ear is quite flat thats why it probably seems detached, but it isn't (picture 3)...

hey, thx for the reply :)...
i have to admit, its not my first try on a head, but the first one which actually went past the "box with nose ears and moth glued on" stage ;)... and i have read a lot of tutorials before doing this, so its not all my work :D

It's not the flatness of the ear that's making it look detached; it's the sharp ridge/line where the front part connects to the head. You can try to have it smoothly flow into the side of the head. You also might see how it looks to pull the back part of the ear a little more away from the head.
I also think the forehead slopes too smoothly down into the eye socket. I'd pull that out a little more.
I really like the modeling on the lips, but I can't figure out what's causing the rippling depression below and to the side of the mouth.
Keep working on it and it will be an awesome head:)

I like her messy hair, it looks pretty rad :buttrock:
It would be cool if you could give her some facial expressions. :)

hehe, i'm quite new to 3d and stuff, so i'll probably leave her as she is, and move on to another technique or another max section... ;)..

one question: how do you guys do your uvw unwrapping? i'm asking because i did the front of my head (the back isn't textured) with a planar uvwmap and it worked quite well for a first try, but isn't this a bit too simple? i found lots of tutorials on the net with procedurs that could take hours, and i did this in less than 1 hour. What is the disadvantage of doing 2 planar maps, one for the front and one for the back?
i'm quite new to texturing and modeling, so i hope im not talking nonsense here :)...

hi pheonix,
the problem with using two planar maps is that the bitmaps will stretch at the sides, which looks kinda nasty. with this example, you'll probably get away with the single planar map as the rest of the head is disguised by that wild hair :)
the best way to texture a head is with cylindrical mapping, although you'll need to assign different material IDs to the ears, cos they'll give you a right headache otherwise. the best (most straightforward) tutorial i've seen on this is at
http://www.3dtotal.com/team/Tutorials/makingofshark2/makingofshark2_1.asp
i'm fairly new at all this too and i found it a real godsend. let me know if i can help further!

to texture it....in case ur using max....u can use the modifier called uvwunwrap which gives u a template to work with.....but u cant export this template....for exporting the template to work in an image editor like photoshop or something u can use the freeware plugin called texporter.......this should make it very easy to texture faces and such models.
