View Full Version : Penciled SpaceVixen: Looking for something to color? art by SEL
Hey guys and gals!
Now that I had some time to post here, I decided to throw up one of my originals done for a client awile back. Its a pretty big file, so I compressed it the most possible without losing any detail. Just thought I could show you some of the work I do, also since I havent had the time to color latelly, thought I would put this up incase you guys want to give it a chance, and color it! If you do, please put your posts up with a smaller compressed file, so this thread doesnt slow down the server... Alright all..GL,,
BTW! You 2d artists should check out the 2d challenge section and vote for your favorite piece, a lot of great entries and not many people voting in that section, I think Kirt was trying to remind people that there is a 2d challenge and animation challenge etc. to vote for on another thread! Help out your fellow 2d artists people, and vote! :)
Oh yeah, almost forgot, if your going to use this image somewhere else, please give me credit for the original piece, thanks!

Heh, i know for a fact im going to make many, many mistakes, but oh well, like i said, this is my first time doing anything like this..
C&C welcome of course :)
Hope you don't mind, but i edited the collar so it was more of a soft rubber texture, imo it looks a bit better.

Another update? (http://fx.hostmb.com/spacegirl_sel-FX-8.jpg)
Nice image SEL. Lots of little details in there which are nice. The thing that bugs me though is it looks like she's ready to fall over. You could fix that by moving her right leg out more so that it lines up with where her elbow is (vertically). The side view of the chair looks kinda wierd too. It needs some perspective to make it more interesting.
.FX. - Nice start on the colors for a first time job. My only suggestion at this point is to loose the lens flare. 1) It looks tacky & 2) it conflicts with your light source on the character. The shadow under her chin suggest the light is in front and to her left (our right).
Ok i fixed the sky, hope you like it:

hey all,
I had some time this morning to work on it, here is just a quick update on where I stand, just blocking in my color, highlights and shadows last!
Snowfly- you have a great choice of colors, would love to see you finish it for youve got such a great start!
FX - its coming along, Kirts tips were helpful, Keep em coming, looking forward for another update from you..
SEL
P.S. Kirt, btw, I agree on the chair in the spacecraft, it needs more depth and her right leg may move out a bit, but the pose was exactly from a human reference, was trying to show more of a quick look right rather then pose her in position for a picture. Thanks for the C&C!

Do most of you use a mouse or a tablet?
I decided to redo a lot of mine, hope its not worse now.
::99%:: (http://fx.hostmb.com/spacegirl_sel-FX.jpg)
SEL - I didn't get a sense of motion from the image at all. It looks like a pose. Hard to capture movement in a static image, but you can indicate that she's moving by using these tricks from animators.
Secondary action - When a character moves there are parts of their bodies or items of their costume that will trail behind the leading object that is in motion. For example, if you move your arm upwards, you can indicate the movement in a still frame by having the sleeve droop in the opposite direction of the movement.
In your image I would have indicated head movement by drawing strands of hair going the opposite direction, or adding a chin strap to her costume that can follow the direction of her head turn.
If her right arm is in movement away from her body, I would angle the forearm inward and have the gun following the direction last (the gun should be heavy, therefore it will be the last object to catch up to the movement of the arm). You have the gun pointing in the opposite direction of her head turn.
Balance - Generally when standing still a character's head will be centered over their feet. While in motion this balance can be greatly offset depending on the speed of motion.
In this case where there is only a quick head turn you can expect the head to be a little off the center point, but since her lower torso seems stationary you would need something to counter balance that upper body movement (or she'd fall over when the head came to it's resting postition). By moving her left arm and the helmet out a bit from the side of her body you could balance the pose and communicate the motion more effectively.
:argh: That was a long post ... hope something in there helps. I still like the illustration, just needs a little bit of work to make it "superb!" Nice coloring job there too Snowfly!
Hey Kirt,
I agree with everything you stated, sometimes the obvious is not always the approach to take for I had a live model in that exact position actually holding a ruler for the gun. Its hard to show the motion you stated since she has really tight clothing and short hair. In retrospect, I should have altered the pose a little more to get the feeling you are talking about rather than going straight from the model, for the model in a way is still motionless in that position. Thats why its good to have a second eye to look at the drawing incase of these mistakes. Thanks for taking the time..

ok... second pass.
Im now starting to mess with the shapes and details a little, so its not really just a straight color.
Im just going to focus on this smaller area of the pic for now.

I really loved what youve done to the piece KingofDaveness!
I love the choice of colors and everything... The only thing I see that needs adjusting is the eyes though. We were trying to figure out what it was about the face that was off. If you cover one eye. everything fits, if you cover the other, the same thing. Try putting the farther eye farther away from the other, I think they are too close, and too slanted downward. other than that, its comig out beautiful!!! :applause: , keep it coming!

i didnt realise there was so much potential in this image, awesome coloring KingofDaveness :applause:

yeah that eyes been bugging me too, but I didnt want to start shifting the picture around *TOO* much at this stage.
I had a look through your work SEL, and the only bad thing I can find is the planar nature of them... do you have any deep perspective work?
Does anyone else think shes starting to look Aussie actress Raylee Hill? (shizoku from Farscape).
