View Full Version : texture or material database for C4D?
Check out this thread. does anybody think this would be a good idea to put some thing like this together for C4d? I mean we already have Deepshade. do you guys think that deepshade is complete enough for of our C4D needs? Or would some thing like this compliation be useful.

This is a very good idea!
The question is: Who can manage such a project?

Since December 2001 no new textures/shader were added there. I think deepshade is "rather dead".

I would happily manage it but the only problem is that I have almost no knowledge of WebPages and stuff. So someone else would have to put them up.

Why making another materials database if we already have Deepshade? We should give it life again, not create another archive. My 2 cents.

i agree w/ThirdEye. Great idea, but why re-invent the wheel, let's just invest into DeepShade.
yeah that probibly makes the most sense. Did deepshade just stop getting submissions? or was there some other reason it stopped listing new things? does anyone know?

Who runs deepshade...just out of curiosity?
can we get something going here on cgtalk....possibly peoples ideas....techniques...or actual files....
if anybody has ideas for relaunch or more impetus...please suggest stuff....i'm sure given the will we can get something underway....hence the question who runs deepshade.

Deepshade is going through a major overhaul right now. That's why nothing has been done with the site for a while.:D
I bet srek or or someone who works for maxon would know. seeing as it is based at maxon-computer.com/deepshade

Here is a quote from Paul Taylor, the guy who runs Deepshade.
Yes, the site is under review for a rebuild, but I just havn't been able to get the time away from work and family to finish it. That said, I have been working on the new look and a database and talking to potential partners as I'd like to expand the site into something bigger.

sounds promising.
has anybody got any ideas about how cgtalk can go about injecting some sort of momentum into such a potentially (more)valuable resource?

maybe we just have to wait a little time. When i came over cinema first, deepshade was a pretty good help to learn shading. if it is easier for maxon to keep the site and database up to date the maybe just need to integrate it in their own resource database on maxon.net. would be easier to find for new users. it would also better integrate in a website and knowledge-database for the users. i personally find it a bit "strange" to search for the shaders on a different website. am i right deepshade is a maxon website?

Hi Folks,
well, lets put the record straight.
Deepshade is alive and well (hibernating). It became so big that adding new content was becoming time very time consuming, and other things got in the way - like, being self employed, with a partner, who is a full time mum to my boy Joseph - basically, supporting the family financially, getting time to play with Joseph etc. (if you are a dad - you'll know, you only get one chance to do this - then its gone forever) anyhow, he's now starting school, life is a little less frantic. Other things are happening.
I started working on an ASP database, this essentaily worked but did need populating with the data aready on deepshade. Then in December I started talking to a web developer who is interested in becoming a partner in the project - this will enable deepshade to become what I always wanted it to be, and amongst other things you will be able to post your materials directly to the database (no more hand coding for me :).
Both of us will be doing this project in our spare time, but I hope to have some concrete information this month. Hang in there, the project is back on the burner.

Hey Paul....welcome to cgtalk good to have ya here and responding....sounds good...can't wait for the re-design...good luck with it....do you want any input from cgtalk or are you fine and dandy?
did you have any ideas for tutorials on texturing...eg settings for sla to achieve a general look....we are forever having discussions on here about say...."How do i make snow"....etc...responses can be varied and very useful...after all i think eskimos have about 40 different names/types of snow....so general settings/tips for achieving a look can also be useful. It would also be useful for people to post setting info.
hope this helps...thanks for the info about deepshade.

Hi again
yes, input for the new site would be welcome, so feel free to post ideas. Remember this is a "free time" project and still being done out of my own pocket - so commercial features such as, on the fly zip compression MAY not be possible, but I'll try to keep everyone happy. The old deepshade had a discussion forum but it was never used - is that still required?. A tutorial section can be added as a database - so if that gets enough votes, then well put that in.
btw - is there any interest from other application users for similar texture only databases dedicated specific applications - I had a quick look around ther web - there are a few - but most seem to have less that 100 items?

I think that there is a demand from users of other apps, but the question is... does Maxon want the maya / max / lw users using deepshade. I mean they are in competition with the companys that make these products. but it all sounds good. do you have a rough time line for when this will be updated? six months three months or a year?

the other apps would be a separate project to deepshade
I would not do anything to upset Maxon - they've been VERY supportive
the database - hope to get running this month
it may be a case of getting a bare bones site going to populate the database - over the next 4-8 weeks
then doing a cosmetic update over the next month or two
(if users don't mind looking at purely functional pages)

I certinly dont mind using a bare bones infetface. fact is we 56kers might even prefer it.

paul glad to see youre open to input....and yes i understand this is in your own time and expense so i hope people will appreciate this when troubling you for things.
my feelings on another forum are forget it...there are plenty out there....an one more isn't really needed.
the database bit tutorial sounds good.....you may have noticed on here if someone posts a thread about how to achieve a particular look....users post a range of settings...and techniques and i think this is the useful part really...cos you can download a shader and get little info...but trial an error on advice is the best learning method and enables users to get the look they originally intended without just loading a shader. Add to the fact you can come back and do a search on say SNOW and get a range of settings and techniques to experiment with...would inho make the site very sticky.
good luck with your efforts.
