Alright, I believe u must use Final Gather AND use camera environment setting as influencing the overall ambient look of GI.

Alright...posted. I think MR is pretty powerful..use settings sparingly. Also knotice some radiosity like reflected light in the robots, which I didn't see in the image you've linked. I believe the artist used Brazil.

do you assign the phong to everything in your scene?? and also you have to use a camera, you cant just use the prespective view?

Ed,
Love the design on those 'bots man, that's tight.

I've used phong because I wanted some reflection. You can use regular perspective window to set up environment setting. I have not tried other materials beside phong tho.
Lord Dubu: Thanks...tho I think I wanna build another bot in the near future.

i'm still have problems with the mental ray final gathering. i used all of the spects from your options and part of my object works. but some of the object just renders out black. i'd post a picture but getting under 20,000 bytes seems impossible. so i'm not sure what to do.
any help??
thanks

Did you check Mental Ray under Render>Render Using>Mental Ray.......?.......make sure you have Camera Attribute Editor>Environment.....with these RGB values.....
0.087
0.121
0.207
That's how I have it.
For some reason, your obj doesn't look like it's receving GI, it looks like standard Maya render.

OK, I did few test renders and this one is prb the best of 3 renders I did, and is close to the "GI" look. Don't mind the artifacts here and there, I'd the quality setting low to speed up things. There's contact shadow front of the laptop on the ground plane, and of course the raytraced shadow behind.
I've also uploaded a scene called: laptop2.mb to your ftp server.
You may want to play with the light intensity and environment color so it doesn't look so bright.

It's either through the way you reduced the size of the pix. Is this a screen cap?...In Maya render window you have to hit 1:1 ratio button and the window will dispaly true/full pic. Or it could be the way you resize the pic in PS. Another thing to check is whether you have the sampling quality levels: Min Samples at 1 and Max Samples at 2.
Looking at the pic tho, I think you have to raise the sampling quality like I recommended.
You might also wanna make the light a little brighter....it's starting to go away from the GI look.
