Im having a few problems with my GRAPHIC DESIGN PORTFOLIO. I was hoping maybe someone on here could give me some pointers and advice.

I have to do 6 required pieces.

1. Compositional Still Life. A kitchen still life with wide variety of objects of different textures. Arange for a sence of depth. Try get a focal point, keep grouping tight and fill entire frame of reference.
Here is what I have: The plate of grapes is the focal point.

2. Crumpled Paper Bag. Use 4b pencil, lighting from behind and to the left large in frame of reference.
Here is what I have:

3.Typographic Composition. Choose two meaningful words and set up one graphic element to go with it and stregnthen the meaning.
Here is what I have:

4.Interior Perspective Drawing. Pencil Crayon, choose a local public place, where various planes meet. Dynamic angle or veiwpoint.
Here is what I have: It is the local post office.

5. Design Analysis. I picked two ads out of a magazine and explained why one was effective and the other was not.

6. Self Portrait. Do self portrait in an environment indicative of some aspect of your character, lifestyle or interests. Use entire frame of reference and visually balance with other meaningful elements.
Heres what I have: To explain: Im a fairly shy person, so at first glance, you see me and only a part of what is behind the 'foggy window', but in reality, what is behind there is bright and warm, the 'foggy window of shyness' blocks it out. I dunno...

I can also submit 4-5 of my own personal pieces. (which I haven't picked out yet)

I then also have to submitt a resume (easy) and statement of purpose (also easy) BUT then also this:
"Prepare a breif but comperhensive type written research paper on the graphic design communications industry (i.e. advertising agencies, graphic design studios, website/internet design firms etc.)"
Ummm.... so what are they trying to say? What about these things, and where could I find soild information on them for the 'research'?

THANK YOU SO MUCH to anyone who can take the time to look through my stuff and give me a push in the right direction.

in the still life, the focal point for me is the wineglass with the eggs, the grapes seem to lead to that. I am not sure where the light is coming from on the whole thing ( I stink at lighting though and will repeat that in this post I am sure )

the paper bag, maybe need to work on the lighting a little more? It doesn't seem to come from any certain place at the moment. If it is coming from the left and behind I think the right front of it should be a bit darker. I suck at lighting though so this may not be correct.

I love the typographic composition :)

Perspective I can't comment on because I am weak there also ha ha, I like the colors

The self portrait, looking at it I did not know why the name was right on the face. After I read the explanation I knew. Thing I feel is the image should explain itself, so maybe if you bring up a hand with a finger writing on the window and even possibly frame the window so we know what it is, might make the image more self explanatory. Even though you are shy I think you should show more facial features. The excercise is probably to make sure you can line up human facial features, but I am not sure on that or what the prospective employer may be looking for .

Fantastic portfolio!

I agree that the wine glass, not the plate was the focal point of the first drawing. If you had wanted it to stand out, i don't think you should have placed so many objects around it. Isolation is an effective way of getting objects to stand out from the crowd.

The paper bag has a nice texture to it, nd I could tell it was paper, but i wouldn't have known it was a bag without reading the explanation. Perhaps a bit more distance from the subject would have made it clearer.

The typographic composition is great. I like the concept and the simplicity of it all.

The perspective of the crayon piece, too, is great. So are the colors. I just can't tell what that is on the far right; the blue tiles. Is it a door of somesort? Either way, you've shown you have perspective mastered.

I think if you inlclude an explanation with the self-portrait piece, it's great. But like the above poster said, I wouldn't know that you meant that without reading something.

As of right now (my junior year in high school), I intend on majoring in Graphic Design. I know I have some work to do If I intend on achieving the mastery that you have. Best of luck to landing the job!

Thanks for the tips and replys. The self portrait is still a work in progress... I'll def. keep in mind what you have said.
Looking at the still life, I agree. The wine glass is the focal point. Maybe I should add more bright highlights to emphasis the lighting direction and focal point.
I will ad some darker areas to the bag as well. (I honestly can't tell its a bag either!)
And for the perspective... Those are just mail boxes. Its the local post office. Part of it is done in realistic colors and the other part is crazy ones. (My post office isn't actually painted like that!)
Im applying to get into college, not for a job though. Then I will learn to actually do some good professional graphic design. I really am excited. (and hope i get in)
Here are two other for sure pieces that will be entered, Im still thinking on some others.

Which horse one should I do? Both? (but printed on the same page?... sneaky sneaky...)
Thanks again for the comments.
