I was wondering what technique people use to create natural surfaces like wood grain, marble, granite, etc., without using procedurals or photos. I read Leighs tutorial and what he said confirms what I thought after trying stuff on my own for a few years: procedurals and photos only go so far on surfaces looking natural and non repetative, especially those that are wood or stone, or some other surface from nature.
So, if you had to texture say a wood floor, and you needed the texture to be non-repetative, how would you go about creating it?
