I am at a total loss as to how I can rig this. Each chainsaw has the ability to be held and move independently from the other, out to the maximum length of the connecting chain. Neither one is dominant, so I can't just create a simple FK chain with one at the top.
It seems like I should be using a LookAt constraint in some way, but I'm not sure how. The whole thing reminds me of trying to rig a train car to follow a path realistically... except that the space between the wheels changes, they spin, they aren't on a path at all, and they're actually a pair of chainsaw nunchuks.
Oh, and I'm using 3ds max, for what it's worth. The rig is expanded from Paul Neale's really nice tutorials to have FK/IK switch and a collection of IK targets besides the original one.
Thanks for any ideas! I have a feeling this is actually really, really simple - I like rigging to a point, but I've been trying to focus on other things.
