What redering (just rendering) program is the best suited for Wings3D models? (To import a Wings3D model and render it...)

(I don't want this to become a war of the rendering programs; I just need some guidence, please.)

Since all I have, at the moment, for a 3D modeling program is wings I'm looking to explore what its potential is and what is compatible with it...:D

3delight (http://www.3delight.com/). You will need Ribbit (http://www.midcoast.com.au/~rgcoy/hobbies/wings.html).

Also, check this Plugins forum (http://pub33.ezboard.com/fnendowingsmiraifrm24) for news/updates/discussion.

So, what is ribbit for?

Currently Povray gives the best renders directly from Wings3d... (www.povray.org). Much work is going into Ribbit (the wings Renderman exporter) and when It stabilises a bit I will recommend 3delight.

Thanks for the replies! (sorry for the delay in thanking all of you...):)

If you are intrested in putting you model in a landscape and think $200 is a fair price for that I can recommend Vue dEsprite. It can also do some simple 'flyby' and 'object part' animations.

If you're a total rendering beginner like me I think POVRay and the Renderman renderers are a bit difficult to get to grips with. At least I find they are!
I'd agree with Hellborn and try Vue D'esprit or Bryce which is even cheaper, about £100 in the UK probably about $100 in the US. It's capable of very good images and is easy to use but veeerrrrry slow!
A good temporary measure is the demo of cinema4dR8 which you can download or get off a magazine CD. It's a top quality renderer and you can take a screen grab to save the image. Of course you can't save files or render bigger than your monitor
There's a new free application coming from Daz3d which uses 3Delight as it's renderer, how easy it will be to use depends how they incorporate it into the app but it should be worth a look when it becomes available. I'll post when the download appears! :o)

I think povray is probably the easier of the 2
it has a gui interface and menu options for alot of the options
it plus a front end makes it pretty easy to use

hmmm, rendering software...

PC PLus mag 05/2002 had the full version of C4D v5 on it... this app does not resemble the latest versions in interface design or does it hold near the toolset of the later versions, but... this really is a highly functional app none the less... crisp fast raytracing delivering quality results... as well has other modeling tools if you are so inclined... well worth hunting down a copy . mag cost me 17 bucks... worth every penny.

I am currently working with Wings .98.06.c because it has the set material where it is.

I find the render in Wings to be ok for quick previews. :)

Hi! I tried to visit Povray site but the page didn't load:-(I try several times in different days but I still can't enter!
I'm the only lucky here to have this kind of problem?
Maybe some explorer settings...
Thanks!

more than likely you just visited during a peak
it seams to be loading now
could also have been a communication options somewhere in between

hope you enjoy it, its a great renderer

cheers

I heard quite abit about Art of Illusion as a renderer it's actually a modeler as well but most just use for rendering in it. setup is pretty easy compared to most of these renders and since its a modeler package it has a user interface to it. The documetation is also good. it only imports obj files it has export to povray 3.5 as well.
povray also installs pretty easy but theres not much of a interface the pluggin for wings seems to work pretty good but for some reason on the create material popup menu it was crashing my system so I removed it and no more crashes.

blackthorn try using 3delight and yafray

3delight is awesome tho it still needs some additional options in wings plugin, and support sds

yafray is very nice too tho its documentation is a bit weak
and the tools for it seems to work nicely

my personal preference is 3delight at the momment but I am playing around with both
both will allow you to view the final rendering tho yafray is saved to file then opened

enjoy and cheers

Does anyone have a link to yafray? Also, is it free (yeah, I know...I'm cheap:shrug: )? ( I saw some renders that look really great with yafray)

-off topic-
I have the misfortune of owning WindowsME (sucks, I know). What would be the most compatable windows program that's affordable and new?

Goatfuzz,
I am not sure what it is going for, but you should be able to find a copy of it reasonably priced online.

Thanks for the advice! I think I'll search for it later.

- I'm itching to get into the CG industry, but as of now I'm in no rush only because of the lack of materials and money I have. (I'm only 16 anyways though... :D )

wasamonkey I have tried both 3delight and yafray of the 2 yafray set itself up to run from a command line on install it seems to work ok need to play with it more. 3delight was more of a pain to install it setup absolutely nothing and I had to manually setup paths for it. my test renders from 3delight don't look right probablly just a setting somewhere the images look pretty white even though the object is colored. yayfray and povray test renders looked fine however. It might be I need to adjust the gamma setting or something.
Did some more testing and was able to get the color to look right but it was only showing 1 material so I rechecked the ribbit manual and it said the split by material feature wasn't working so that explains why I was only seeing 1 color on objects that i had more on. so I guess I will try a uv mapped object.

I was wondering if anyone knows of any galleries or pics done with wings and/or 3delight. I've heard about how great 3delight is but I haven't really seen what it can do (the 3delight site gallery doesn't really do it for me). I'd especially like to see some GI rendering. Just like to see if it's worth spending the time to learn some renderman for a free renderer (not that there's anything wrong with that).
