View Full Version : 'The Host' on release
PaulHellard 03-16-2007, 01:01 AM Hi all,
South Korea's 'The Host' is on release in the US at the moment and is causing quite a stir. So we thought we would repost the story we had online in July last year.
This feature describes the work done by The Orphanage on the CG monster terrorizing the city. Click the image to go to the story.

Watched this at the weekend.. movie wise it's kind of weird, I wasn't sure if it was supposed to be funny (I suspect it *was*) at points. I really liked that allot of the CG monster was in direct daylight, something that doesn't seem to happen all that much.

Saw this movie on HK DVD a month ago, and after watching it I immediately bought the Korean 3Disc DVD Edition. I liked it a lot. I was a monster film with comedy mixed on there. Plus some drama as well. The Orphanage and Weta worke on the VFX. Too bad it had a limited release here on the U.S. I hope they release the 3 Disc Limited Edition DVD here though.

I saw this movie a few days ago with English subs and I really enojoyed it.
The creature is Very cool. It has freaking little feet with toes at the end of its toes! Tons of detail was put into it and it just looks cool. It even swings around doing backflips using its tail to grab on to things like a monkey. It grabs people, eats some and regurgitates others...and there was this one scene that reminded me of Half-life where the creature spews out a ton of bones and chunks of meat.
The movie itself is very nice too. It made me think of Little Miss Sunshine at times because it has some funny moments but overall it's a serious movie and follows a disfunctional family around. The plot is very good and it's not a typical predictable Hollywood story...it has more sub plots and I really enjoyed it. I think you should all see it if you get a chance to.

It's a neat trick that they shot the chrome spheres with real film to eliminate the problems arising when there's a relative difference between the way the film cameras and digital cameras 'see' the scene.
This seems like basic common sense. Is this the first film to ever synch their real/cg lighting like this?
(now I really want to see this movie so I can check out whether this lighting technique will affect how well the cg creature integrates into the live action environments)

Hehe chance would be a fine thing... it's not really a big deal if you've got a decent colour pipeline. What's more important is actually being able to get the HDRI for the correct lighting setup. Normally film crews are incredibly unhelpful when it comes to this stuff.
It was great to work on and to be on set for this show. Director Bong and the crew were a real pleasure to work with and the end result is something that I know we are all proud of.
And Yep it was a good call to shoot the HDRs in cam It was really only possible as the camera crew was so helpful and Director Bong understood the importance of giving us a bit of time to record all the data that we needed. We also shot a bunch of Stills for some really good env recreation.
Lots of fun,

It was Brazil 1, as vfx work was completed on the show about a year or so ago.
