Is there any info on who is doing the varying clips? This one looks a lot like the guys that did Vampire hunter D.

I agree the first one was better, but this one was still really good.

Oh please, that animation was worse then the original Vampire Hunter D.

Sorry, but this one was really, really, really bad, especially compared to the first.

Yeah, I looked up the information on the production staff back when the first Animatrix clip became downloadable. That info was reposted from the Animatrix website in this previous CGTalk thread: http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=41892&perpage=15&pagenumber=8

To answer your suspicion, you are correct about the Vampire Hunter D connection. Both were directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri, and both were animated by the same studio, Madhouse.

Thanks man. I like this clip alot but, the female in the lead roll really could use a conditioner or a haircut or something. Overall, I thought this was better than the first one. I think the coolest part in my opinion was the character particles that streamed from the bodies like blood near the beginning. Very nice, I'll definately be getting the DVD when it comes out.

Dammit, I was under the impression that all these films were going to somehow tie into each other, like all continue along the same storyline, each one adding it's own piece to the puzzle. Now I'm more confused than ever. Can somebody please tell me what the hell this has to with the first one (other than it the fact that it takes place in the world of "the Matrix")? There are alot of unanswered questions from the first one, and this one left even more. The animation was great (tho I personally liked the first better), but it seemed like just a very small slice of a much larger story. Are they cock-teasing us, or is this all there is? I was really expecting a conclusion to the human-AI war. Bah, maybe it'll be in the film. I'm a bit disgruntled. :annoyed:

The Second Rennassaince Part 2, with the conlusion to the AI war that you refered to, will be coming online May 4.

In between now and then we're getting Detective Story by the guy who did the Cowboy Bebop movie.

I'd wait for the The Second Renaissance part 2 for any tie-ups to the first short GRMac.

Anyway, I'm still downloading :(

Am I the only one that thinks the 2nd episode SUCKED ASS???

I hated the character design, the execution of the idea, the animation, the voice acting--everything.

I've seen all Yoshiaki Kawajiri's previous animations, and I've been a fan of his since 1987 (Beast City, Demon City Shinjuku, Cyber City Oedo 808, Ninja Scroll..etc), and this one SUCKED in comparison.

Just my opinion. :D

@ alias.Mako & belail:

-Whew- Thanx guys, you made my night. Now I can rest easy in knowing that they are going to tie up the loose ends from Episode I.

Still, I can't help but feel like this Episode (II) is so arbitrary. I mean the animation was great, but what the heck is going on here? Can we have some more info please? It's cool to see some well executed battle sequences, but I thought the whole point of these shorts was to give us all the juicy backstory to the Matrix. I don't see how this helps us understand this world any better. It just seemed like a very weak story, especially when compared to the first installment. Some character development would be nice. Bah, maybe there will be a conclusion to this as well? Anyone?

edit: Lunatique, I thought the animation was this short's strongest point. The character design wasn't really doing it for me though, so I agree with you there. I'm not a big fan of that "graphic" style. They went a little nuts on the inking. I felt many of the lines were way too bold and the colors were too muted.

Rob, dude... You're right.

This one was really horrible compared to the first one. It was much more just a little tangental story that happened to be in the matrix - the first one had alot more depth and kind of illuminated the world in which the matrix takes place a little.

The second film contributed nothing to the matrix 'universe'.

Blegh.

Unfortunately I have to go down in the disappointed catagoury. This may have to do with how phenomanal I thought the first episode was but also because my opinion of Kawajiri is falling. I loved his earlier work, Ninja Scroll in particular, but I was very let down by Vampire Hunter D and unfortunately I think he carried many of its short coming over to Program. The characters are lifeless and the dialouge and plot seem to serve no purpose other than to have the characters do something when they are not beating the crap out of each other. The ending in particular seemed to have nothing to do with anything because it failed to answer some of the most basic questions that had sprung up.

The art design and the action were very pretty, though.

Actually I think this episode has been interesting in showing what fans get out of The Matrix. Some people are loving this because the action was more what they were expecting from the first one but others are hating it because it comes across as being shallow and poorly written. I guess there's more of a split between the action and philosophy crowd than I thought.

I personally got a little disturbed by the "Holocaust" scene. The animation wasn't too great, imo. But I'll wait for the second installment to make any more judgements on it.

That hair was INSANE. And there was a bit too much cheese. What story there was got rushed, especially at the end. I also found the end a little realistic, what the armor-guy dude says right before she gets pulled out seems really superfluous to me-- by that time the program was over, no sense just torturing the woman...

Overall, though, I find it um... not bad.

ACFred

huh. well, that was a let down after the first. I realize that the Matrix was inspired by many different anime films & manga books, but I'm kinda bored with this attempt to shoehorn the Matrix into these purely anime creations. For me, one of the best parts of The Matrix was it's use of anime styling but still making it accessible and attractive for all. This last Animatrix is simply a typical anime sword fight, not at all original, with a little bit of Matrix inspired voice-over work. The charm that attracted me to The Matrix movie is nowhere to be found.

And, yes, I'm a tacit fan of anime & manga.

Still, I'm really looking forward to the rest, hoping that this last was just a bad egg.

That's it....it is official......I hate the Wachowski's. They are slowly draining me of all the money I have. I will now have to own this DVD in multiple version just to make sure that I have a back up.

Sweet Budha's Left Nut.....that was cool as hell. I cannot wait for the movie to come out.

The first one was better, BUt it was what it was, a fun "free" couple of minutes. Animation wasn't top notch. None the less I still very much enjoyed it. I guess my expectations weren't as high as some of you guys. Once again though everyone is entitled to their own opinion. As far as it tying into the first one i don't think it was meant to. It was just another story from the matrix, much like the comics on the site that have been released since the website has been up.

hehe imho, the end was a bit of a cop out :o... altho that is the general consensus on this thread too.

I only watched Vampire Hunter D for the first time a few days ago, and whoa, it's incredible how much this episode pales in comparison to it.... and Where's all the freaky video-gamery baddies with their unique freaky powers? (besides that cliche samarai guy... who really had no powers to begin with, anywayz :o)

They need to make this more that 9 episodes and turn it into a series or a mini-series. This is what animation should be like. If you're gonna make a cartoon meant for older people, then BOOM, make it with a combination of 3D and classical animation. I'm looking forward to seeing the last of the online episodes and buying the DVD.

By the way, anyone who likes Samurai Jack, and Star Wars should know that theres a new Clone Wars cartoon. Being animated by the same people who do Samurai Jack. Each, like these Animatrix cartoons, will be about ten minutes long, and tell a back story, specifically, the events of the Clone Wars.

Wow, that was pretty cool. I love all that guys work. Kawajiri rules. Too bad it could not have been longer.

I agree the first episode had a better story, but the action in this one was well done.

Glad to see that all the episodes will provide something a bit different.

(share the love)

Actually I think it was the opposite for me. I went in with no reall expectations. At first I did not like it but the story of this short drew me in so that by the end I was quite into it.

Looks nice, great action, but come on, THAT WAS LAME! Just like the first one. These ideas don't even build on the original concept from the first film. It just flashy animation, with bad plots, corny characters and horrible dialogue. I enjoy anime, and I have watched dozens of excellent work, some of which is by the very artists doing this, and I am just unimpressed. Sorry, two out of a possible four stars from me.

That was great. At least I thought. Now I wonder how many haters are get on this thread and say it sucked.

If you're counting then add one more 'hater' to the tally.

Sucked is an understatement - it was cliché, uninspiring and dull... I thought the notion of these movies would be to 'explore the matrix universe', and the first episode did that IMO, this just repeated elements that have been established in the film and wrapped them up with terrible dialog.

I'm glad it's all free to download, and I enjoyed both episodes, you guys are expecting too much of something thats totally free.

the first one was "wow" material in my opinion. It built upon the matrix story and let us know how they got where they got in the movie. Now this 2nd one was OK, the animation was great stuff overall, but the story was a real letdown after seeing the first. It seems a little bit pointless...right now it just seems to be a similar story to the movie but now with different characters and swords instead of bullets to dodge, no new information revealed, no additional plot.

It'll still be quite a thing to watch when it is all put together, but I would have really prefered a continuation of the story laid out in the first episode, that's what really caught my attention.

Well, carry on, it's still good stuff!

IMO this one was a let down compared to the first one. I've watched the first one over and over and I'm still not sick of it. The dialogue in this one was predictable and corny and the Matrix effects like the time slice were mis-used weren't really necessary. Some nice animation though and very enjoyable to watch.

i've downoalded it 3 times, because the file was always corrupted..200mb for nothing especially when i tried just to save the light version.

I join Lunatique, very poor however character's design doesn't disturb me :). I'm a big fan of Yoshiaki Kawajiri and i have the bigger respect for him, especially he's an excellent director, screenplayer, a genious but there...!

Matrix and matrix's trend have confirmed my opinion, it sucks..oh sorry it's really, really boring :) The first Animatrix was almost the last chance...
it's what happens when there is hollywood's influence (simple exemple: Final Fantasy). Hollywood has killed many styles, they have exhausted all without originality. I hate them!

Funniest it's that all ONLY occurs to the United States.Ok it's realistic because it seems to be like that in true life (ironic).

anyway it moves Great but is it enough? fortunetly it's free.

Personally 200mb  Big downloads are nice for those who have the bandwidth, or for those that downloaded the little one, liked it, and then wanted to see it in top-notch quality. At 200MB nothing is obscured by compression artifacting.

Plus, it was only 160MB :)

my god, what a waste of time.. I didnt find the animation, nor the style any good. The way the characters was painted was (for the lack of a better word) piss poor, definately not what I expected. And the story was just boring. It could have been done in less than half the time, looked to me like it was stretched to fit those 10 minutes.
Everything just looked very "blank" and unfinished. I give it 2 out of 5

If the 2D animation was shot better and if it was smooth as hell, And if the action was a reminder of Disney's Tarzan, Then it would probably have been a more selective episode.

I think if this episode was the Animatrix's first presentation, then it would have either been more cherrishable, Or It would have demoted the entire project to less enthusiests.

Then again if this was the first presentation, I don't think i would have been so quick to download another presentation.

Hahaha, yeah the arrows...

When they came flying towards the girl I was thinking "heh heh, if this was a generic boring manga she'd start spinning that staff to deflect the arrows. WTF??? SHE JUST SPUN HER STAFF TO DEFLECT THE ARROWS???"

It was so cliche and predictable. Bah.
I loved the first short though.
