Hi. I am a research psychologist studying children with autism and I need to convert some .MAX files to .3DS or other more flexible format. These files are a series of objects called "greebles" used in various kinds of memory research. The following is a link to the original author of this work, Dr. Tarr. His work and a stuffit archive containing the .MAX files of the greebles and various renderings in TIFF format can be found here.

I have emailed Dr. Tarr and he is currently unable to do the conversion.

The group I work with is trying to better understand how people with autism process the visual information presented by faces. These greebles serve as control stimuli that are novel but have some features that are similar to faces.

Can anyone help me extract the objects embedded in this archive and save them as .3ds or other file format that can be transferred to different applications?

I would really appreciate help.

Thanks,

If you have the original MAX files and 3DS Max, then:
File > Export (Selected)
choose 3DS from the drop-down box

Export and Export Selected are slightly different. One exports the majority of the scene, and the other exports only what is currently selected in the scene.

It's a bit unclear from your post if you have access to 3DS Max. If you have the MAX files, but don't have 3DS Max, then you'll have to find somebody with 3DS Max to do it for you.
How many MAX files/greebles are you looking to convert?
Also, there might be a demo of 3DS Max beyond GMax, but I'm not entirely sure.

Sorry. I forgot to mention that I only have access to Lightwave and I need a file format that I can convert to a Lightwave object.

How many MAX files/greebles you talking about?
Post some numbers, like numbers of files and file sizes (a quick average or guesstimate).
If the numbers aren't too big, I'll volunteer to do it for you.

Thanks so much for inquiring about this.

File sizes are between 300-400K on average.
There are 5 "families" of these things that are broken down into 2 genders. The # of each type is displayed below.

Family# # of Male # of Female
1 10 6
2 10 6
3 6 10
4 10 6
5 6 10

That is a total of 80.

I know that is a lot, but I would appreciate anything you could do. Even just one of the cells in the table above would be great.

Here is a picture of one of these objects:

Let me know if this is something you want to do. Again, thanks for your interest.
