Hey Everyone,

Tonight I had the urge to rework an old model of mine. I fixed some bad geometry and refine the overall shapes. I plan to do some really detailed texturing when I find some time.

Any comments/suggestions are more than welcome.

Really nice raptor :)
How do you texture them? All UVs?
Was planning on making my own (realistic) dinomodel, where do you find good reference on them?
I love your work :)

great looks really cool
is the lower lip (?) perhaps a bit to small for his teeth
hope you know what I mean :)

Hope to see it textured soon

Thanks guys.

Baroba:
Thanks. At this stage, it just has a simple HDRI environment map applied throughout. I will, however, use UV mapping when I do the final texture work. I used my Jurassic Park "traditional plastic" model as my primary reference. I also used Gregory S. Paul's "Predatory Dinosaurs of the World" book to refine the overall look. The book isn't really great reference material though.

Jurrasstoil:
I see what you mean about the lower lip. I'll do some tweaking there. Thanks for the suggestion. It might be some time before I can texture it. I'll be sure and post it here though.

Here's a wireframe if anyone's interested:

Hey hey Rob, great work, excellent polyflow ! Impressive !

Like it alot!
One sugestion though:
There shuldn´t be any teath that far back in his mouth. It looks like it would be vary dangerous to chew anything. Isn´t there a membrane-cheak-thing where the upper and lower jaw meet.
Like the pic from Jurassic park atached here.
Other than that... nothing to comment but to say Exellent job!

Thanks Robin.

Thanks Facial.

Henrik:
Thanks for the comments. I agree about the teeth. I'll work on them a little more. I do have a membrane cheek thing, although it's not really visable in the renders. (You can see it in the wireframes) It's not nearly as large as the one in the JP photo though. Maybe I'll rethink that too. Thanks for taking the time to find and post the reference image.

Okay.

Here's a little texture test with a color & bump map applied. I think the lines in my bump map are too thick. :( I also plan to add some sort of "grime" map and specular map to the model as well. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
-Rob

Alright! Better and better.
I have just a few things to say.
I´ve neer seen a reptile with square "scales". They are more of a rounded hexagonal shape.
Yes, the lines are too thick. Maybe you shuld make them more difuse too, right now he looks somewhat like a bathroom wall. Round of the top edges more.
The ridges around the mouth look good but shuld be larger. If you look at a modern lizard these ridges, (or scales, I don´t know what they are actually. I think they are just bumps), are among the biggest on the head and gradually reducing in size further away from the mouth.
This is just my opinion. I hope you listen to what others say (or look at pictures) first before you change things.
Hope this dosn´t sound too harch but we all just want you to do your best. Hope this helps.
Good luck!
;)

very good.
add some small bumpmap onto the scales and and make them not so shiny. also noise up the bump map that you have right now

good work so far, but to clean, there are no muscles, he doesn't look like a real beast... And the texture is too clean too it looks like plastic, modified with a hot nail (hope you know what i mean ;) )

and if you didn't recognize you have a private mail by me :)

Thanks.

Henrik:
Thanks again for the great suggestions. I still haven't updated the teeth and membrane thingy, but I plan to. I really appreciate all of your great feedback. Don't worry about being too harsh. That's really what I want. :)

Vik3k:
Thank you. Good suggestion.

Neox:
LOL "modified with a hot nail" :) What's weird is that I do know what you're talking about. I sent a reply to your private message and I set my account up so that I receive an e-mail when I get them from now on. Thanks again for your interest.

Hello again,

Here's my new update with several bump layers and some modeling refinements done on the teeth and the mouth membrane thingy per Henrik's advice. Thanks a bunch for all of your superb suggestions. They have really helped out.

Let me know what you all think.

Looks alot better :)
One small detail
Should the bumps be small on soft tissuen, like round the eyes (got that) but also on the nosecavity, and in the mouth corner (lowerlip)
But why that colorscheme?
The brown color scheme is most commonly used.
The tiger stripe scheme is also very well known ( Walking with dinosaurs)
I have no idea how it will look on the whole dino, but it will be different for sure :)
Great work

Now we´re talking!!!
Glad to make a contrebution. I have another sugestion! How about that!
The sugestion is this:
The tounge loks abit flat. I would (if it were my model) retract the tip of the tounge abit and raise the middle of the tounge. Maybe and make the nice tounge texture abit more pink.
The texture dosn´t look like it fits on the corner of the eye. And I think that the skin material is a bit glossy, make it more "difuse".
Great eye!
Keep it up!

This dino is startin to look soo great!

I think one thing taking away from the realizm is the uniformity of the skin texture's bump/deform (whatever) One place for suggestion is around the eyes it should stick out less since the skin is less thick and the wrinkles/scales would be more fine

keep it going!

For anyone interested, I've posted the same previous full sized render (1280 x 1024) at: http://users.chartertn.net/robpauza/raptor/raptor.html
It may be a few days before I have time to update it again.

James:
LOL :)

Baroba:
You're probably right about using smaller bumps in those areas. As far as my color scheme, I wanted to do something a little different than I'd seen before. I was going for a sort of iredescent look. At this point, I'm still not totally committed anything colorwise. I'll probably do some extensive tests after I finish the whole body. Thanks for the comments.

Henrik:
You're suggestions are always welcome. :) Again, I have to agree with you. Thanks again for loaning me your "critical eye" and taking the time to comment.

Adam:
Thank's man. I agree with your critique.
