Keep it up ;)

thanks for all the replies. i´ve been a bit slow on the update since i cant find any DECENT reference pics for the side window. i dont REALLY have a clue what they look like which makes modelling a bit of guess work.
still i hope to update that stuff soon....... yeah....

Very nice. Are you using nurbs or polys?
Stimpy
03-11-2003, 10:20 AM
its all poly done poly-by-poly too.. :0
started out with one single polygon and have been extruding and subdiving my way around...
i guess the next time around i will use some splines for the basic shape and later on convert to polys for the details...
but like alanis morissette also used to tell us.. "you live you learn" ;)

Great job so far but doesn't the roof have some grooves in it running from front to back? maybe you are planning to put them in using a texture bump map, but I just thought you looked like you were modelling all the bumps... maybe I'm wrong though... Looks really good either way!
Stimpy
03-11-2003, 02:04 PM
you are right. didnt notice those groves in my reference pics, since most of them dont show the roof too well. will try to put them in. somehow. :P

This is a really cool looking car. I'm sure you are planning on doing this some time but the car body needs depth. Its quite aparant when looking through the windows that the body is only one poly wide. Or are you going to make the windshield so refelective that you can't notice this? That would alright too.
Either way, good work.
PS: I really like your Robo Girl. I'm modeling a character from BubbleGum Crisis as well. Yours is much farther along than mine however.

yeah i havent yet decided how to do the interior. i was thinking of combination of reflective windows and simple geometry interior to make it seem full..
we will see.. if i can EVER get to update this damn thing. i´m low on reference pics which make some area a bit poopy to get right.

Nice model so far  can't wait to see some updates...
if you need some reference pics here's a good site!

pretty slow page loading but they have shots of nearly every car you can get!

thanks for all the replies...
did some more work on it (finally) and tried a first quick (....) rendering of it. bunch of stuff to fix, not quite happy with the headlights yet, and i should finally try to get the windows done...

the sharp cut in the middle of the hood is due to the two halves not being merged yet... btw. :D

hey... cool!
what kind of material have you used at the gray part ?
look my model.. still in wip.. that white object will be the brake

if by grey part you mean the part in the middle, just some silver reflectionmap and a white grid for reflection. i think.
Stimpy

quick render of the full thingy. still lots to do on material and lighting. and i spent SO long getting those dumb window edges right and now you cant even see them. ah well.
windows are black for now since theres no interior

Great...it´s good!
i like you car material..
im trouble to do mine... i think its too strange...
seems that the reflections are wrong...
can you give me a tip?
if you have some time.. give a look at
http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=53153&highlight=escort
look at the picture that the car is without the tire(its the picture before the last image)..
see how the reflection is strange?
if you can give a help...
thanks!

That's a great work man.
The shader is cool, but it seems that the antialiasing level of the raytracing is too low. The reflections of the ground on the car is sad or maybe the ground texture is not enough high res...
Keep it up !
I can't wait to see the environnement :bounce:

small update.. tried another shader for the paint.
on my to do list:
desaturate tires some more
work on headlights (too bright)
interior
work on the environment. this is just a quick test setting to check the overall feeling

 keep up the good work man!!

cheers

maybe you should rotate the tires like if that car was jusk parking... it could give a more natural effect :)
Stimpy
04-16-2003, 07:25 PM
thanks for all the comments...
re: shinyness = i actually like it the way it is right now. dont think its TOO shiny, just... brand new or so. if other thing its too shiny i will look into that again
re: glass = actually i wasnt happy with the old glass at all, cause of the weird way xsi handles high reflections + refraction, making the interior all black. i tried a different shader now
re: tire position = good idea. i rotated the front one now a little bit, not much tho. depends on the final position of the car i guess. but its a nice way of showing off the tire treads i made. after all the time i spent on em, i wouldnt want them to disappear in the shadows...
ok, hers a smallish update.
- new glass shader - started on interior - added brake disc and side blinker thingy - played around with the floor texture a bit...
things still to do
- dashboard - rearview mirror.. hmmmmmmmm.. and others.

It's looking nice.
I think the area around the windows looks slightly flat though.. you know the part between the front and back window etc.
The area to the left of the stearing whell looks a bit empty as well, isn't there normally some sort of shelf there with like the stereo and glove compartment under it?

Looking good. Are the doors seperate objects, or are they part of the overall car mesh? Just curious.

looking good stimpy. only thing that is bothering me is the strong hihglight on the drivers seat. it looks like the car has a sunroof. does it?
Stimpy
04-20-2003, 06:46 PM
dont know what happened with the seats actually. since the car was only lit by a white grid above the car the seats didnt get any light at all, so i set up a light only to illuminate them, but for some reason it always looked backwards...
anyway, i did a new environment today, totally got rid of the hdr map and the final gathering, and am rendering happily (and very very slowly) away to something that looks close to being finished. and i am being surprised myself at how good it looks (i think / hope).
so stay tuned. :D
