View Full Version : ATI with Messiah
I have been having a war with the latest Nvidia drivers. They tend to work with a few apps but not all of them. Wings often gets the shaft.
So. . . I was buying some new machines for my renderfarm and threw in an ATI card. Nothing amazing. X1300 its called. So then I ran 3D Mark on it and. . . it sucked. But I got what I paid for. . . its just a renderfarm machine. . . but THEN! I ran Messiah on it. And it worked! Perfectly! No slowdown or glitches or anything. Wings, Lightwave. . . all worked.
I'm in shock!
My next graphics card is going to have some big honking ATI/AMD card in it.
Cya later Nvidia. . . we had some good times. . . but you lost the plot for me. :-(

I have an ATI X1600 on my laptop and it outperforms my desktop's Nvidia Quadro FX700 for animating in messiah / Maya. So I end up animating on my laptop more than my desktop

That's amazing. I was under the impression that everybod prefers nvidia for
everything. I thought nvidia has the drivers that evrybody is happy with.
Yep that was the old rule. Now things have changed. Wild eh?

I and a few others on this form really pressured ATI and they responded and helped our little program kick butt with all their products. In fact, last I heard it was now among their developers testing program.
I never had an NV card until recently with Messiah, ater seeing it perform.... I went right back to ATI. I have 2, tried and true ATI 9800s *running OSX86 and 1 X1950 pro for my strict XP needs. The 8core Intel Mac I am getting, will have an ATI in it as well.
The real kicker is watching everyone get their Vista drivers in gear...

Thanks crossbones, that's interesting to know.
I'll tell you something interesting on ATI drivers, I'm recently working out on a laptop with a mobility radeon 9700 256mb, and on some projects with many poligons and subdivision surfaces in messiah a warning with unsufficient memory would appear, I changed the original drivers with the omega compatible driver for ATI and the same projects now load with no problem and I can even move the objects fluently!

So, like, for a few days I got enamored of the nvidia 8800 gtx, because who
doesn't want the next greatest thing? But then I figured out that putting
two ati x1950 pro's together would also be pretty darn good, for only $338.
I posted about it on here:
http://tinyurl.com/38uz9x
on the hardware forum on cgsociety.
Now there's this guy who wants to sell me his ati Fire GL V7200
for $300. Oh man, I dunno...

haha i could have told you that myself. i use an older radeon x800 passively cooled. So far its the best performing card on my workstation 3d wise, even better then the super duper quadro at my old job. I hear that it also works much better for macs too. I forgot all about ogl issues since buying that card and this is across lightwave, messiah, maya, realflow, modo and mudbox.

The reason is ATI has put a huge amount of time in listening to the communities. They actively partcipate on rage3d.com and they were very kind to help us out with messiah. Their driver team is dedicated to making sure of compatibility across the board.
The X1950 is a great card as was/is the 9800 pro. The one thing I notice is that there is no reason to buy those high-end quadro cards anymore because your gaming cards have the necessary power.
As far as the Mac's go. I love that ATI and them have teamed up to give us the best support. Modo on the mac is rock solid as is Maya.

yeah, so two x1950 pro's should be plenty good enough for professional work!

I'm happy with pmg messiah on my win xp sp2 + Macbook pro with ATI x1600 mobile than my workstation with gf6800. since the font and gui is more beautiful and speed is very well. So, i'm working on it mostly now.
After several embarrassing/frustrating situations where my nVidia card let me down I went and got an X1950. Very happy with it so far. Not really that much faster. . . but so much more predictable.

What kind of x1950?? How exciting!
I honestly have no idea. I got it at a second hand computer store so it didn't even have packaging. Just the card in a static free bag and an install CD. All I know is that I'm problem free and happy. :scream::bounce::thumbsup:

This is very strange, because I tried Messiah last night on my laptop with a Radeon Mobility Express 200, and it's completely unusuable... even XSI works well on this rig. I even installed their latest drivers.

Thalaxis: Force 16 bit buffer and it will run fine.

I looked for that option... all I found was force 24-bit Z, not 16 bit.
Do you know what driver versions should work, by any chance? I wonder whether maybe the driver installation itself is hosed.
I'll see what I can find tonight, if I have enough energy for it after class.

Just download the latest omega drivers supported by your card. I have the 200m as well and run Messiah just fine. I'm in class at the moment, but as soon as I get home I'll post up the drivers I am running with.

I hunted down and installed the latest Omega drivers... same problem -- and there's still no 16-bit z-buffer option (I don't know what the deal is with that). This is very frustrating.

Take a look at the "3D" tab inside the Advance Display property (from the normal Display Driver"
It has a "Compatibility" button and you can choose the 16bit buffer there.
Mine is Catalyst Omega Driver with x1600 Mobility (Macbook Pro) version 7.04.

Thanks for the pointer. I'll take a look at it tonight, hopefully. I don't remember seeing a button labelled "Compabitility" anywhere, but that might just be because I wasn't looking for it.
