Title: The Metrocanyon
Name: Lui Fontillas
Country: Philippines
Software: Painter
In this piece, i was trying to show a futuristic city established in a canyon set during a sun down. I am always fond of cityscape concepts and i always view feng zhu's and ryan church's works as inspirations. I pretty much enjoyed doing this one though angling the dome right & limiting my colour palette for this piece are quite challenging for me as a beginner.
this is the first piece i submitted here at cgtalk and I would really appreciate any form of help (crits, suggestions, tips) to improve on my future works.
Thanks
Lui

Hi Lui
It is a nice image. you certainly have got a 'mood' in the piece which I like. The thing that first hits me is that the perspective looks odd.
There appears to be a few different vanishing points which are close but not the same. I think the dome edge is what's disrupting the eye the most. You have us looking down on it, but when you consider it's scale and distance from us the curve should be the other way to almost flat. it's a tricky shape to get right at that angle.
if you cover that area of the monitor with your hand and then remove you can see that when covered everything else works well. remove your hand and it looks strange. the other problem is that the same dome edge is fighting with the persective of the platform on the far right.
one way of helping would be to draw perspective lines on your first layer in painter. I do this in PS all the time. At the first sign that Im not sure on my persectives I'll draw lines everywhere. I dont knowif you can do this in painter, but in PS you can also create a 2d grid and then distort it to your perpective lines which will give you depth information. Im sure you could do it in painter.
You can check you own work this way by using all the strong perspective lines as a route, and on a new layer follow them along to your vanishing point. Do this regualrly with new work as a foundation (and then delete the layer ar the end) and you'll soon develop a stronger sense of persective in your images.
Sorry I took a bit too long to explain!
thanks for showing us your work. Good stuff!
