View Full Version : WIP - Weight Lifting
SamuraiSimon 03-12-2007, 03:36 AM Hello all,
I have attached a link for an animation that I have been working on today. All crits welcome, especially on the timing.
The clip was done using a biped with Character Studio in 3DS Max.

He should lift with his legs, not with his arms. Watch some reference stuff or act it out and take note. There's lots of that type of lift in youtube videos (people trying to impress, but unknowingly making good animation references)
As it is, this doesn't look like a weight lift at all, just...a lift. Figure out what people's bodys do when they're trying to lift something heavy. They pull up with their upper body and then the lifting comes from the legs, and the arms stay straight as the weight is coming up (they might not in real life but in animation, it makes it read better that it's a heavy object).
Once the weight is off the ground, it should rest at the chest level until he can gather himself up and throw the weight up. When he comes to rest with the weight, maybe take a step back to show that taking that much weight quickly will affect his center of gravity.
I do like everything up to the actual lift though. Keep at 'er.

Kevin - thanks for the crit.
I went back and redid the animation from the lift onwards. Most of the tweaking was done using the curve editor along with changing some of the key frames.
I know there is still more to be done but I think I am getting closer.

You need to watch some video references, it's still too missing of weight.
He lifts the bar in two time and it's unbelievable (not realistic) I speak french ... sorry..
Also you can put a frame counter on your vids it's easier to tell you exactly where you should change things.
Watch this and try to analize.

I have reworked the lift of the animation, link is below. I have a problem with the biped jumping up at around frame 190, I haven't figured out how to stop this - if anyone has a suggestion it would be appreciated.

Timing, man. Timing need attention, definately. There are fast parts and really slow parts. The slow parts are where the character is trying to affect the weight, and the fast parts where the weight affects the character.
Look at that reference video that was posted. As he lifts the weight over his head, he gets under it so quickly and his arms are extended right away.
Weight lift is a tough thing to animate. I think you should work on more basic things for the time being, until you get your sense of timing down. Just animate a character jumping, something simple. It looks like you're just starting out and honestly, weight lift is too advanced for a new animator.

oh, and your problem with the character "jumping" is coming from you pulling your cog control too high for the legs to extend so it lifts the character off the ground. Lower the key at the top of the translateY curve at that point.

Hi, I think also you need to try some more simple action, cause this one ask a lot of work and understanding of timing, balance, anticipation, acceleration etc..., in fact it's a super good resume of all the animation principles.
But you need to explore these one by one first...
So I'll try to point a few of your mistakes.
Between 12 and 20 his pelvis don't try to balance his body ...
Frame 72 his arms are bend, and if it's so heavy they must be straight.his back is also straight , you need to curve it to show the weight, then come to a straighter pose...
Around 97 the action must be faster .
And the main is that your timing is completly off.
try to decompose the video reference and put a frame number on each action (extreme)
You'll get an idea of the timing.
And just take the time to read this (http://www.keithlango.com/wordpress/?page_id=226)
Keep going ;-)

thanks or all the tips so far. :)
I know the timing is way off, for some reason I have taught myself to get the poses correct to begin with and then fix the timing up once I know that the key poses are close to being correct. It's probably not the correct way to animate but then again I am still learning.
Hopefully by the weekend I will have some that is looking more realistic, both in the timing and in the poses.
Here is my latest attempt : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBdo4HmDX7A
