View Full Version : MechWarrior Movie!
bonecow 03-04-2003, 03:19 AM This could be great (ID4)... or it could suck extremely hard (Godzilla). If there is a God, it won't turn out like Wing Commander. Dean Devlin wants to produce. Could have some great CG.

Hey that doesn't actually sound half bad!
And I liked Robot Jox!!! Hell, that's one of the ONLY movies I've ever seen that actually went through with having no sound in space-- how often does THAT happen? Okay, so that's kinda dumb really.... but those robot fight scenes were just plain awesome!
there is no way that will be good. he already takes the blame for Godzilla and 8legged freaks. Plus mechs are a just a little stupid, especially the american versions.

who cares if it's good or bad, a movie like that is all about the effects. besides, how the **** can you predict how good something will be when it's not even out of the scriptwriting stage? i'm all for it no matter how it turns out. shit man, the effects done by stationX back a few years ago for the game were pretty damn cool by themselves.

Agreed BrettPaton .
Besides any movie with a whole bunch of giant Mecha blowing stuff up has earned my movie ticket.

I hope they use the Mech 2 storyline and put some good actors to work on it. Mercs like Tommy Lee Jones, Sam L Jackson, Linda Hamilton, etc. for the veterans. And Rookies like Angela Jolie, Vin Diesel, .... scratch that....
"It's set 40 years after the 'Mech wars have ended, and introduces a group of young heroes in their early 20s
It's not going to be a MechWarrior movie. They are making, "YoMechMercTV" Realworld for MTV. Why bother?

I would LOVE to see a great mechwarrior movie but if they make it I will only expect another crap game to movie conversion...
I wish Wing Commander could have been good... What great games...

Pulled this off of Yahoo's news site:
He said "Eight Legged Freaks," which he produced for $30 million last year, was an experiment in putting almost all of a film's budget into special effects. Similarly, he said his intention with "Mech Warrior" is to make it look like a $150 million movie while spending less than $100 million.
Hmm.... there is some truth to that, but if you are expecting the plot to be bad (which it will be), then you wan't someone who is going to go all out on the effects. Sorry, but this looks like another D&D/Wing Commander film.

Dean Devlin is a lot of things, but being a bad producer is not one of them.
How quickly we forget.
From Moon 44. ID4, and and Stargate, he has demonstrated that he can make a movie with very cool fx with a low budget.
Hell Godzilla was a lousy movie with some very cool FX.
His writing leaves a lot to be desired, but I would not criticize his strengths.

A few years ago when I was at Foundation Imaging we were told that Ron and Paul had bought the rights to make a MechWarrior TV series. They were going to shoot the live-action in Canada and do the CG at FI. We did some tests but nothing ever came of it.

I love ID4. It was a neat throwback to the scifi flicks of the 50's.

Not very often and I wish directors would apply it more often.
Off the top of my head:
2001: ASO (the movie that started it all)
2010
Firefly (TV series)
Did the Alien quartet implement it, too? (need to check that out...)
Anyway, can't wait to see how Mechwarrior develops. Even if it looks like it might suck it'll still be worth a look as a rental. :p
If they do gonna make it, i hope they gonna use the newer mechs... a lot of the mech designs in the Mechwarrior universe looks 3 decades old...
