Well, this is my first daily sketch, although I've been eying these forums thoughtfully for the past few weeks. I just never really had the time. Oh, by the way - I thought this was a very good topic, I'm sad that no one else has done it.

Nice Sketch Stormchylde I like the loosenes of that big brush but still getting that 'epicness' in there! - perhaps the colours could desaturate to push the depth in the image
welcome :)

I replaced it with a less saturated version, and I do think it looks betteer. I originally meant for it to be a lot more red overall, but it didn't work out.

stormchylde - nah like - I liked your foreground saturated reds that was hot
check out this M@ concept piece (http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/8669/mathiasverhasseltmyj0.jpg) you can see how the environment eats into elements in the distance, thats what I meant - but im not telling you to change it man :)
I ripped on your idea but I couldnt keep my strokes loose and I didnt have time to do any other spartans... T.T

Oooh, I get it! Okay, yeah. I really like yours - that armor looks great, so does the cloak. I hope my sketches improve with each daily sketch I do. ;__; Although I can't say painting sweaty Spartans is one of my favorite things.

Photoshop... 70 min (but I had to talk in between so probably around 65 min though...)
My objective was to make it look convincing real... with correct values and color contrast at the same time, make it look beautiful.
I think I failed though. :( Any suggestions, criqitues, etc. would be very helpful (overpainting is even welcome. ;))

Edited: Okay, I played with gamma, overlay, and contrast... softening it somehow. Which do you prefer?

wow Cyanid! That is one really cool sketch! I tried to do something dynamic but I didn't achieve it the way you did! great colors too.
DreamMaster I don't think you've failed, values and overall composition are really convincing, great ambiance.
Embryotic, we sort of had the same idea, I like your background!
Stormchylde welcome ! (I'm pretty new too here ^^ ) great first daily sketch!
well here's my take:
I've only had the character at the 65 minutes, it took me another hour, for the "accessories" and the backgrond"
I think he looks flat (seems to be my problem -_-) and I don't believe the pose and expression to be as dynamic as I would' ve liked

Nawen: it looks good, for more dramatic pose, try curved spine! It makes a huge difference for me.
Cyanid: I like the vibrant colors you got in there. Nice styled artwork! Very dramatic! I wish I could do an artwork as dramatic as that one. :)
embryotic: I like the gold armor and the sky! They mix well for a stable feeling, mood.
Stormchylde: Nice loose brush use! I liked the original one, the red colored one better though. Still good! ;)
Anyways for me... I redid mine.. because I am bored and got a lot of time... and I'm allowed to enter more than one sketch here (yup I do read the rules!). Also, I wasn't satisfied with my other sketch so I did a thumbnail sketches (which I almost never do) to find a better composition and better idea and used black and white to color approach (wanted to see if that helped with values/colors issue that I'm having).
Photoshop ... 65ish? min (a lot of breaks in between).

Danielh68 - Yo that's very nice. Not surprised to see you're a graphic designer - Most people would try to fill up that white space. ...Just spent the last half hour looking at your sketch thread... inspired by what you were saying about making a crappy brush then forcing yourself to use it! I'm off to give it a shot. :)

Oh dear - tricky approaching this when a certain Mr Miller was there first! Below is my efforts at an hour, still miles away from a finish really. Skimming the Wikipedia article, the treacherous Ephialtes character caught my attention, revealing the hidden mountain path to the Persians - I wanted to capture his moment of enlightenment but I was beaten by the clock. Ah well....

Dreammaster - Thanks - I dig your light treatment on you 1st sketch - really added alot to your picture - and your 2nd picture is cool to - colours make it look ghostly (green myst and under lighting)
I dont usually do thumbnails or value study either - I think that thumbnails should be small and in black and white .... apparently if you can read a small picture well - it will work bigger too. maybe I will try it out ...
Specialbrew - cool character and shadows too - I like his fingernails!
Cyanid - DAMN! thats brutal! - great gestural style and energetic strokes!
Daniel68 - man that rocks! ... but that guy is about to get Pwned BIGTIME...
Nice sketching everyone.
Cyanid, great action, very nice. Could use some Greek (or Persian) elements though.
Daniel, great sketch mate. Looks like they're squeezed by those rocks, ouch. :)
Specialbrew, very nice, great expression on the character. He looks distressed or upset, crazy even, don't know if that what you were aiming for.
Photoshop, little over an hour. I started with 2 guys fighting, but ended up with just one :hmm:. Pose is a bit weird maybe...

wow great one Art2!
Thanks Dreammaster for the tip, I'll try to work on him again if I find some time, he's a bit too stif and the colors are just boring. I really like yours, the colors specially, and the work on ligthning is really great both on the "fight scene" and on your character. The tones are really convincing on the second fight sktech.
