I'm trying to intall a custom mental ray shader (mix20layer) into maya but i'm having a real problem locating the correct folder to place it in. The material i've read says that below is the proper place to intall custom shaders. unfortuneatly, their are no folders past the "maya.app" folder.

/Applications/Alias/maya8.0/Maya.app/Contents/mentalray/include

Since "Maya.app" is only an icon designating the program, who do i get to the last 3 folders "Contents/mentalray/include" if there aren't literally any folders to open?

I've tried uploading the shader directly by going to Window/Rendering Editor/mentalray/shader manager. this will temporarily allow me to use the shader, but as soon as i close and reopen the file, the shader is lost. I also get this warning;

// Warning: couldn't find shader library: mix20layer.so//

Hi,

I too have struggled with this. It feels kind of silly to admit it, but there you go...
Are there no kind OSX users who could help us out with this?

Have you checked in your Library folder? I don't run Maya on my Mac, but I'm guessing that's where you'd put your shaders.

Hello Leigh,

Yep, I have had a good look through both libraries. I cant see the rayrc folder in there.
I suspect they must be hidden folders, I'll fire up Onyx and see what I can find....

EDIT: Using Onyx to show hidden files and folders still didnt help, neither did using the "Go to folder" item built into Finder. Which will normally take you to even a hidden file, for example "aw.dat".
Stumped.

a .app is really just another folder, you can open it by right clicking it and selecting explore/open, forget which I don't have a mac at work :sad:

Oh duh yeah I didn't even think of that. Right click and select Show Package Contents.

That should do the trick!

Bingo!!

Thanks a lot to both of you. That is great news, now I can get on with the more interesting stuff without having to resort to the BootCamp dance.

Cheers fellas,
