we have two copies of 3dsmax 5.1 on two machines, each running network license. both machines are dell precision dual Xeons (one dual 2.2, and one dual 2.8GHz).

recently an error has been occuring where any maxscript calling up a dialog box will generate a maxscript error. the totally bizzare thing is this only occurs for logged in users, but not for the master system administration account.

and bizzare again, we have a third machine with the same setup, only it's a dual PIII 1GHz, and it does not have the mentioned problem at all.

anyone got any ideas? we're smack bang in some high project load at the moment, so i don't particularly want to rebuild the machine right now, but i don't really have much option at the moment due to this affecting the users' ability to do renders via SFNR. (one user also cannot do a region select due to the same error).

any ideas???

Is it a local user or domain user? If it's a domain user try to add it locally and make it Power User. Do you still get these errors if you make them Administrators?

yeah, i already tried prooting the user to local power user, local administrator and even domain admin, but still no luck. very strange.

it's not profile based however, as the same user can log onto the older PIII-1GHz machine and still do what needs to be done no problems.

i have a feeling it'll be rebuild time shortly.

Is it any dialog box or navigation dialog? Also, maybe reset permissions on max folder and child objects. Maybe you added something lately (like SFNR) with the wrong permissions.

yup, tried all the permissions things too.

it's only a dialog box that's created by a maxscript call. normal dialog boxes that are part of max don't have any problems.

Have you tried to repair?

Other than that you could try Ntfilemon and Ntregmon to see if some file or registry errors stand out at the moment the the problem happens. Make sure to turn them on right before the problematic operation and then right off. That's what I do when I don't have a clue. :)

did a repair of Max, as well as a complete uninstall, delete stray files and registry settings and then reinstall and no luck.

i think when the 3d guys pop out for lunch i'll rebuild the system. i'm at that "no clue" stage myself. :)
