Does anyone know of any software for writing and debugging MEL??I am new to MEL and am finding the script editor very limited and tedious to work in.
thanks in advance

debugging.. hehe..
you are funny :)
serious:
check out shareware tool: ultra edit with MEL syntax highlighting from highend3d..
really a very slim, cool and handsome tool..
dont even think about the script editor.
you will go nuts, when you do infinite loops or maya crashes and all you did was in there.. always copy paste the stuff from an external tool
cheers

I hear UltraEdit is good. I use the ConText editor and it too has a highlighter for Mel:

Oh... and did I mention that it was free? As for debugging... Alexx is right... the trusty 'print' statement is my debugging tool of choice.

It's a good thing print statements work within expressions.
I'd say there's an opportunity here for someone who wants to come up with a MEL debugger... Actually I have an idea or two about how such a thing would work, now that I think about it... :D

Check out a brand spanking new posting (like today) at highend called "ASM" (under Global Tools, W2k only.)
Looks pretty interesting....

emm.. that tool looks a bit strange to me to be honest..
the window opens somewhere on a monitor i dont have and in the one file are the only statements written:
select -all;
delete;
hmm..
anyone got it to run or is it just a virus?
cheers

In the readme the author wrote " Tested on Maya 4.5 under Windows 2000" which is just what I happen to be running, so yeah, I've been able to get it to run :)
Um, other than it opening darn near off screen, I haven't had any problems with it. Though I'm still trying to figure it out.
Oh, be sure Maya is open *before* trying to run it. Or have Task Manager open ready to kill it :hmm:

Emacs in "c-mode" works great for me. Emacs does run on windows, but it might be overkill for what you want. I'm wierd anyways.

Hey Taos! Emacs rules! I forgot all about it. I used to use it all the time. Do you have a quick link to Emacs for Windows? CTL-X-C
Right here.

Hi, was looking at Context, where's the hilighter download for MEL?

Hmmm... it used to be under Tools on Highend3d. The author is Brik Jacobsen. It was free when I downloaded it, I suspect it still is, so just drop me an email and I'll send it to you. I emailed Brik Jacobsen to get permission to post it here, but he hasn't responded yet.

Just got the okay... so here it is. Just unzip it into the highlighters folder (something like: D:\Program Files\ConTEXT\Highlighters):

I use the Boxer text editor for working with MEL scripts and all the coding I do (www.boxersoftware.com). I just added *.mel to the C/C++ syntax highlighting group, and the highlighting works fine for me. UltraEdit is a good editor as well. I don't like Emacs at all, but that's a personal pref. vi was created by satan.
