View Full Version : make fire
hi, i have found tutorial online as to how to make a fire here (http://www.prodesignhost.com/tutorials/3d_studio_max_tutorials/3D_Graphics_Creating_An_Animated_Camp_Fire.php) but i am not happy with this that much. are there any better, "more realistic" then this one?

I'd try and find some stock footage that you can place on a plane and then play in a loop....
what i am trying to achieve is create a scene with camp fire and tent. then make video going around it, plane wouldn't give me desired effect.

Hi there, if you need a fire, you can use visible light for it, it is very ease and it looks nice, wait for a while, I will upload a scene file for you (R10)... finished

PS: eye of my avatar is made by visible lights, too....

There is a new and better version with volumetric lights.... It is still very simple.

I've actually had pretty good luck using a ring of cloth, belted/point fixed at the bottom, upping the wind, then playing with the material until I got something pretty close (lots of fresnel/transparency). It's a touch cartoonish, but as long as you're not going for ultra-realism, it gives a really nice look.

The volumetric light approach can look as good or bad as your texturing skills I'm afraid. It's not always an easy task. Failing that you can use a particle simulation using placards, e.g. something like Storm Tracer or a fluids simulation to get a result, for instance in Samirs DPIT.

I wish I could offer some advice but fire is a tricky thing. On a side note, I see that you live in Peoria. That wouldn't be Peoria, Illinois would it?
take a look at the new Dpit V4 (http://www.dpit2.de). It has the ability to create very realistic fire and smoke with the "fluid part of Dpit". If I remember right, there is a sample nwith a campfire in the examples.

For Max. But for particle shots of this nature, you may want to consider
that Max gets a lot more developers attention when it comes to
specific tasks such as this.

Peoria, Arizona friend. I guess i should be more specific :)

PZDM,
Just downloaded and rendered a few seconds of the fire file. Very nice stuff... and fairly quick render.
Thanks much for the file to disect. I always get at least one or two "Ah -HA!" moments while picking apart your files. Thanks again.

Pyrocluster can make some reasonable fire, more your raging inferno type; but, unlike a light, it can be interactive
