View Full Version : Character: Animator Guy
Antropus 03-03-2003, 06:57 AM Well, another character for my short movie WIP: The Animator.
No textures yet.
I used 3DSMAX 5.0 with e-light script + 3 omni lights and scanline render.
Like my other characters, he has a "realistic cartoon look".
I hope you enjoy and gimme some feedback. Thanks.

Let me be thirst first to say wow. You might as well start rendering those wireframes because thats what's going to be requested next. I've been in the industry for a while and I'm floored with your work. You're pretty fast too. Do you have any concept sketches for these?

Holy man! That looks great. I love the lines in his face, it's very expressive, I'd love to get my hands on that to animate!
Good work.

I really like the style of your characters. The eyes are so expressive! :thumbsup:
The animator is suprisingly smooth-skinned though compared to the old lady. Are you planning to add age spots and moles with bump maps later?

Hi-
Awesome stuff. I love the non-realistic/realistic look. very original and fun.
So 2 things:
1- you mentioned the lightscript etc...what else is going on in the file? this render looks SO good. Is it a brazil render? If you feel like it, can you maybe delete the head from the file and just throw in a sphere or something and upload the file? I would love to play with your lighting setup. [I know that is a lot to ask, and most folks do not like to do that, so I will understand if the answer is no :)
2- on your Plumber thread, someone asked for to see a map or 2 of yours, because they are so great. Feel like uploading a low rez version of one?
Again- thanks for posting. This is some of the most fun and interesting work that I have seen here!

Can you post some facial animation???

Excellent, I can't wait. It even seems like the ears are translucent. Really well done.
I am psyched to see the animation.
Are you doing this full time or just nights, etc?

Thanks a lot guys.
Because I have to finish the scenery, five characters' modelling, textures and rig settings (and I'm making EVERYTHING alone), the facial expressions, for while, are just references and for fun. Still a lot of work to do...stay tuned!

just a question actually on your plumber, but don't want to dig up an old thread....
the wrinkles in the lips... those really subtle ones. are those texture based? i would imagine so, given their scale... just curious how you pulled that off

Hey man! You say "textures"? :cool:
Well, this is my first attempt with animator textures.
Specularity is a bit over but I like this way (it's a "almost realistic" model, remember? ;) ). Textures are still very symmetrical. It's a WIP.
I hope you enjoy and gimme some replies.

his skin does look a bit more like plastic than it did in the first one you posted.. but other than that: simply breathtaking model..
Stimpy
03-05-2003, 07:57 PM
it looks like you used symmetry on the bump map, which can get a bit irritating when you look at the picture for a longer time.. maybe alternate the left and right sides a bit for a more natural look.

Hey buddy hows the film? Man what can i say very very nice. I want to see some animation man:) let me know!
wow!!! Awesomeness! Only crit, perhaps lower the spec a bit? Other then that, holy sh*t!! :drool:
giantrobot
03-06-2003, 04:42 AM
I dont mind the specularity...i think it is fun. It makes him seem like a greasy animator stuck at his desk for days and not sleeping or showering...but I do not know anyone like that;)
The eyeballs still blow me away, and the subsurface scattering too.
The first image seems to have some funkiness on the bottom eyelids. Is it just the angle or is there some extra renegade skin?
Still would love to see:
- your light setup ( I know, you said soon but I am impatient :) )
- some textures unwrapped
Do these characters have teeth etc.?
Still awesome!
Antropus
03-06-2003, 06:04 AM
Thanks A LOT for your comments guys. You ROCK!
Textures are 100% HAND PAINTED.
My objective is to do a character with "realistic cartoon style", 48-52 years old, however with child's soul, as the animator should be! :p
- First tests with the eyebrows;
- Still without eyelashes, hair in the ear and nose;
- Still without hair;
- Still without textures and bumps on sides of the head.
New details:
- pores in the nose;
- less specularity in nose;
- eyebrows (textures+splines combo WIP);
- asymmetry in the bumps;
Plus, the diffuse map. I hope you enjoy.

Hey Antropus,
These look awesome. One improvment I think with the eyebrows could be to make them more sticky out hairy rather than flat hairy. Alot of old men have huge amounts of eyebrow hair which just sticks out loads! this could be quite an exploited fun area to do for cartoon style :bounce:

03-06-2003, 08:23 AM
everytime i look at it it looks better and better:eek:
i dont know what age u are looking for if u are looking for somone around there 40's its looking good...but if u are aiming for an older look maybe add more bump to the chin and upper lip area...maybe a little more shade...the mouth seems a little too youthful:beer: this shnit rocks:buttrock: :buttrock: :buttrock: :buttrock:
i think this thread diserves to be on the front page:thumbsup:

03-06-2003, 03:02 PM
Great job so far.
I was really surprised to see how simple your map was. Just goes to show how a great model can really carry the weight.
I too like the eyebrow idea (more furriness).
Are you hand generating all of the renderable splines or are you using a script? How are they deforming with the mesh? I have been experimenting with shag fur and hair but the results are not to my liking.
Hope you do not mind the questions...but I just think folks could learn a lot from your techniques.
Thanks
Antropus
03-06-2003, 08:54 PM
m_greenwood and giantrobot,
Thanks guys.
Yep, I made eyebrows with splines (one by one) and with help of textures on his face. I'll do some adjustments in eyebrows today. I think I can get some good results with no plugins for hair and fur.

Some updates on textures, bumps and splines (fake hair on eyebrows).
This work still WIP!
- Textures are 100% HAND PAINTED.
- Eyebrows are splines (one by one setting)+textures+specular
- Original texture size for head: 3000x1500
- Render: 3DSMAX 5.1 scanline with "fakeosity" (custom dome with 96 spot lights + 3 omni/key lights).
I hope you enjoy.

Not that I think this needs improvememnt really...because it is looking really great, but I think that the hair is not as strong as the rest of your work. It looks pretty good, but really looks painted on. Is there any way for you to maybe use a hair plugin to just compliment the painted hair, the way that you did on the eyebrows?
Also- Thanks for the light setup. It is cool that you share. I will post my model with this setup soon just for fun :)
Of course, it did not clue me in on how you did that sub surface scattering on the guy...

Hey Antropus!
I have to say I love the little wispy bit at the top of his head that is perfect. However I think that you don't need the sideburns someone that old simply doesn't have them or it at least looks very strange on an old person having them. Also with eyebrows you need to make the hairs stick out toward the top of the nose. Hang on I will try and find a picture on google...be right back.... ok there are absolutly no pictures on the net I had more faith the internet its full of young people!!!
But old men usually have really hairy ears and big wispy eyebrows that stick out loads.
To be honest its gonna look very impressive whatever you finally finish with though hehe nice m8 :D

First of all, this guy is amazing!!!
A couple things bug me though. The grey hair seems a little out of place with all that dark hair. Especially since there is so much in the brows, but none anywhere else. Maybe mostly grey, with just a hint of dark hair? Also, his nose looks very young compared to the rest of him. Especially in that last picture, it looks like is has no bump or anything. I know that it is there from the begining of your thread, but I can't see it anymore. Hope this helps.

Well, due to the enormous deception with 3DSMAX skin/rig, besides the extremely slow feedback in deformations, I decided to migrate the project INTEGRALLY for Maya, much more suitable for characters animation. Here they are the first tests done with Maya. I used my own domelight (60 lights + 1 omni/key), scanline render and the Human Skin Shader v1.0:: [By Tom Bardwell] for a "little" SSS simulation. NO HAIR YET. With that, my project will still delay, but at least it will be very viable now! The paint effects will help me a lot, mainly in the hair painting. I hope you enjoy this "new stage." To transport the wires for Maya, I used "max2obj" a free plugin for max, in low-poly/all quad and I subdivided in maya. Some texture adjustments (nose) will be easily resolved with powerful Maya Unwrap editor! Uhuuuuuuuu I'm very happy with first results

Thanx A LOT guys.
No tutorials yet... a lot of work guys. Sorry for now...
New attempt in Maya. No hair yet. Just light tests (my own dome light) and some skin tests to fake SSS. Thanks to Julian_J and your great shader work [;)]
I hope you enjoy.

Well I would like to excuse me to all for the problems with my old server.
I believe that from now on won't have more theses problems because I registered my own domain on this week: www.antropus.com :D
As I spoke previously, these are some of my first tests with maya.
I know that still exist many adjustments but I believe that I will manage to do a good transition from max to maya.
No hair yet!
I hope you enjoy.

Great! some of the images are back.
they look excellent. Your maya shaders are even better than the max ones. I especially like the highlights on the lips and the glancing highlight on the side of the head.
I too am about to port a model to maya 4.5, and was wondering where to find the Human Skin Shader v1.0:: [By Tom Bardwell] that you mention? I did a search but could not find it.
let me know if you will please. Thanks.
edit: ok, found it at highend3d :)

Thanks A LOT guys.
giantrobot,
man, I've to use my own shader. Human Skin Shader don't work very well with my lighting settings...
Try to download some scenes from http://www.cg-art.i12.com
Julian have very good skin shaders there ;)
My first tests with eyebrows (a few hair)/eyelashes (all poly! no paint effects)
I hope you enjoy.

That's funny, I checked his stuff out last night. I was playing around a bit, and can not figure out how to get that good glancing highlight off the side of the head. I saw s.stahlberg has the smae thing...but I just cant make it work. I wounder if it is my shader or just my map/light setup.

Antropus, thanks for the help.
I think I might start a WIP thread so folks can give me a hand...I am still having issues with my lighting and mapping.
I duplicated (sortof) your setup. Are those rectangles area lights? or white plane objects ?
Also, would you be interested in showing your specular map for this guy? even a samll one or one that was watermarked like your color map? I am interested in seeing how your specular map deals with the lips and head sides, etc.
I will send you a link of my head WIP when I make it too.
Thanks!

Thanks Troub :thumbsup:

yep, I have 1 area light (with depthmap shadow) and 2 white planes for reflections. I have another frontal light just for specular effect.
Here are some of my WIP maps (original size 3000x1500):

Antropus-
Thanks SO much. I think that will be a big help. The specular is really similar to my original specular map (lips especially). I think that I must be doing something elso wrong, because I just cant get that lip gleam or the glancing highlight on the side of the head.
Here is the link to my WIP like I mentioned. Check it out if you can. I am going to be moving it to the texturing forum i think, to try and get some help:

I am happy with it in general, but really want those few little things. :)

PCollier,
thanks a lot. I'll try to finish one or two characters for Expose Book but I don't know if I have some chances.
giantrobot,
I checked your post. You have done a very good job man. Nice model. With some adjustments in your textures and ilumination, will be an awesome work.
HADES,
Thanks man. This scene are entirely rendered with maya scanline. Incandescence map is just a little part of my shading network. It works well but I think with mental ray it can rocks!
