View Full Version : CgTalk Daily Sketch 1004 : NTL: "Fat Man & Little Boy" -HYPER REVIEW
RobertoOrtiz 03-07-2007, 01:49 PM "Fat Man & Little Boy"
What is a HYPER REVIEW topic?
This specific thread has been picked to be an educational thread.
The idea is that artists will be able to get feedback from fellow Artists
and will be able to perfect their technique.
Here are the general rule for this type of topic:
An artist who post their post their images, is expected to give at least ONE feedback on any artists who preceded them.
Artists CAN post revisions to their pieces. But is has to be on the SAME posting
and only the FINAL piece is eligible for voting. You can post up to 7 revisions of your drawing (This is a vbbulleting limitation)
The criteria for review should be along the lines of:
Composition
Theme
Color
Style
Anatomy
Technique
Bulling and smugness are not acceptable behaviors, so please keep the comments positive and informative. If someone steps over the line, please drop me a PM, ill take care of it.
These are the general rules:
You have NO TIME LIMIT for your sketch. IF you go beyond the assigned time limit , you have to post WHATEVER you have done after the time has expired, along with the FINAL drawing.
Post only your FINAL piece on this thread, based on the topic on the thread. (Note this rule is void on a Hyper Review thread)
Only final pieces can be posted on the thread. They must have been done AFTER the topic has been announced. (Note this rule is void on a Hyper Review thread)
RESOLUTION : The image can have any aspect ratio up to 800 x 600
They can be done on any medium.
If you wish, you can add a brief text description about your piece.
Only original compositions. No "tributes" or plagiarizing, unless is it an integral part of the challenge.
You can post an entry at anytime for the topic presented on this thead BEFORE the voting thread for THE WEEK has been posted.
The artist also has to post total length of time it took and program used.
Any piece caught breaking the rules will be taken off the thread.
The topics will be picked at random from the list on the TOPICS thread >>LINK<< (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php/?t=145003)
(The author will be given credit). So guys keep them coming.
You can add multiple entries, but please dont post WIP (Unless you intend to update them).
Good Luck

ok So i bumped up the values some, but also i gave the foreground a redish tone and the city a blueish tone so that it will create depth. I added the red light since it seems like it would fit the scene and also give reason to the red tone in the plane. Improvment?
edit- forgot picture haha

Calisto- thank you, i hope the tone change doesn't mess up the colors ^.~
Codenothing thanks for the Hyper-crit!

Im a bit weary to post now - Ransom's pic was pretty sweet - and I suck when it comes to Values..
Ill probably crit on the next sketch seeing as Codenothing already did such a good job.

@ codenothing Fat man and little boy were the names of the bombs that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the big bomb is fat man, the smaller is little boy.
Thanks once again for the help and the kind words!

don't have time tonight to deal with colours, here's my quick sketch (PS, 45min).
embryotic:
you accomplished alot for 1.3 hrs. My crit would be that the forms could be sharpened up a bit (hard shadows might help). I can see that you went into adding some grain and texture a bit early. Your time would probably be best spent refining the forms first, then detailing after.
Composition wise, you might get better results from a birds-eye view or worms-eye-view considering the subject matter.

Tried something cartoony... may try a more traditional image if I have time. I'm reasonably happy but there is ALOT of room for improvement.

I'm not qualified enough to give crits to other, but at least I'm gonna try...this is such a great thread idea, I jumped in the opportunity!
Well congrats everyone that's quiet great, as everyone already got feedback, except from Kimded and Xodibox, I'll give it a try on both of you.
Xodibox your character stands are really original, so comic, and really dynamic! It would be great to see them in color too, but I really love your work in black and white, it's already so "living", I do hope I'll get some crits from you to improve my work ^^
as for Kimded, I really don't know what was made by purpose and what wasn't so that's kind of hard to give you feedback...maybe you should work on proportions ? you still can exagerate them, to give it a comic-look, but maybe you should try to get a bit closer to a more realistic anatomy. Maybe you could contrast a bit more the skin colors too, It would give more deapth...
well that's just suggestions, don't pay attention to them if you don't think they're constructive enough.
so, here is mine:
that's what came into my mind when I saw the title. It took me about 3 hours (I'm such a slow worker compared to you all...), a bit less maybe. I hope you'll give me lots of crits to help me... I'm not really happy with it, not totally happy whith his expression, not happy with the hands, and above all...I'm not happy with the skin...how do you do to make great skins ?

oh boy I am weak in anatomy, but will give it a shot.
Nawen - Values: I have problems with that myself, but would love to see some darker areas on him so he does not look flat. IE under his chin, shorts, shadow on the gruond area so he does not look so much like he is floating. Round out the limbs a bit.
Anatomy : please forgive me on this area I am not a good one for anatomy crits. His screen left forearm looks a bit short and bent at a not so natural angle. It could just be the position of his hand that gives it that funny bendy look. Screen right arm, looks a bit like it is growing out of his belly, maybe we need to see a touch of the top of the arm. His screen right , guess you could call it breast is a bit larger than the screen left one.
I personally would love to see a little more detail in his hair and I am not even gonna ask about the little boy ha ha.
edit to add the following: I didn't have this at the time of my post , but knew it was out there. This is a post of some links that Frostblade posted in Maladies wip thread

Nice work every one.
Nawen the left hand of your figure is screaming with life, it is rendered really well. His right arm, on the other hand, looks a bit stiff maybe if you put a bend in it it would look a lilte more natural. (Pun totally intended)

Wow, thank you so much Ransom and Ivy00!
I'm a bit stuned by your kind words, that's really encouraging.. :) and your advices are a gold mine! I'll do some touch up on him later, taking consideration of what you both told me.
I really appreciate Ivy that you took the time to fully detail my work, I'll try my best to improve it now. (and glad it gave you a laugh ^^ at least I reached my point)
I really like your image, specially the colors, and that great reptile-like skin!
And Ransom, thank you for the brief tut, I took advantage of it. (and what a great sketch you did !)

Thanks Ransom! - youre right about the defining shapes - anyone know how to define shapes, is that just working your shadows/highlights to greater effect?
Nawen - all this is is just my own technique on what I might do with you image, take what you may... :)

Really cool idea with the Hyper review threads Roberto
I hope over paints are acceptable? anyways here goes
Cute picture calisto, the frog looks really lazy :P
Didn't really have to change it all that much. I think the biggest thing was the background , it looked too saturated. So i started with De-saturating it a bit, and broke it up with some bigger brush strokes. Added some soft shadows here and there, dimmed down the white highlights. Probably should have added some more hard edges and shadows, it's a bit soft in some areas. Lastly I cropped the top off, because i didn't think it added anything to the picture, and it made the composition better.
Wee I think this was my first over paint, it was quite fun to do =)

lol well, yeah, that's the first thing that came up from my perverted mind i guess :D
embryotic that's so cool ! thank you so much, I try and used your technique my way.
Thanks to everyone, you all helped me a lot already.
I got back to him, trying to keep in mind, all the things you told me, so here is the result:
http://www.hacarnan.com/marina/fatman%20copy%20retouches.jpg
He looks less flat I think, so that is already a sort of improvment, but the skin still looks so plastic...I think I'm still a bit too shy with shadows..? I can't get rid of that waxy effect..drives me crazy. (Ivy I tried to work on the hair, but I didn't know how to do, so I tried to improvise something)
gosh i have to go to bed, it's so late up here

Hi,
I'm just begginer and posting my second sketch so it's hard for me to crit your great works. But to be fair I'll give it a try ;)
@ray-noa: I would desaturate and lighten up the backround of the image to give a depth to it :)
@elzilcho: In your image I'll add a shadow also under the figures to ground the. Disturbs me a little bit when they are "floating" :)
And here's mine:
