Hi there. I'm trying to create an effect of the water surface in udnerwater, like images below.
http://content.answers.com/main/content/wp/en-commons/thumb/7/7d/250px-LightningVolt_Deep_Blue_Sea.jpghttp://imagecache2.allposters.com/images/pic/NGSPOD05/111140%7EUnderwater-View-of-Swimmers-and-a-Boat-at-the-Surface-of-the-Ocean-Posters.jpg
Could I please get some hints how to have these kind of effects?

Should I set up a nurbs plane? then environmental fod in software render?
How do I go about the texture of the water surface? ocean shader and tweak it?
In the 2nd image, you see bright lights coming through the surface. How would I achieve that effect?

thank you!

I tried with fractal texture with displacement map on the shader of the water surface then applied ocean shader to a spotlight.. Here are some screenshots. These are still not exactly how I want it to look like.. Help needed.

Cheers.

Why not use ocean shader?
For the light you can use spot light with depth map shadows, add fog light on, and some animating texture on fog light color.

Here is for the light effect:

For the look from the photo really depends which renderer you are planning to use.
Check out luma shaders tutorial. Thet might give you some idea.

If you have maya 8.5 you might check the new shader.
