I'm an XSI and Soft animator learing Maya. These free models are awesome, I was hoping to skip the weighting stage, cuz I would prefer to concentrate on animation. I had a thought that if someone was practising weighting maybe I could hook up with 'em?
These are the models I'm interested in:
midpoly_01
gods_demons_challenge_01
Noodle
Han_Solo
Any takers?

If you have a decent understanding of 3d software and mainly character setup you should know how tedius and time consuming it is so I woudlnt expect too many takers...
on the other hand learning the software means that you should make the time to learn how to set-up now that you have some pretty good models to start with. But if you wanna get some ready to animate models that are already rigged ( like I did) here's a few links..
www.lostpencil.com
(awesome new model, with bone select graph)
www.rigging101.com
(new versions of ikjoe and jane.. sweet troll model)
credit to these models are on the respective pages so I didnt add names here, if you wanna look into rigging there are some rig easy setup systems that I havent personally tried but should be interesting..

I thought this was a great idea for me to practice texturing objects, faces etc. but for some reason I can't open the files. Free models part 6 is in obj. format and My 3ds max 4.3 won't open any of the files. I tried importing but it tells me that its a unknown format. I tried opening normally with no luck.
Part 5 models are the same. I downloaded the 3ds max format files and when I go to open any of them I get a message stating that the file is missing Dlls. I just tried opening Kioku_head01.max and it says ( missing Dlls File Name: ViewportManager.gup. I click open and nothing happens. They're all like this. Some are missing more Dlls than others but the result is the same.
Please someone help.
ah i know what you mean, all the models are Max 5 data, try to import obj or 3ds format, if you want any specific model i could try to export it for you as a script so you can start it in Max4 and work on it, but i definately haven't got the time to translate every model into a script...

Hi everyone,
Great work. It really says something that talented modellers take the time to create models for everybody to look at and learn from.
A question to Neox and Kioku:Can I use some of these models for a free project I'm trying to put together? Here's why I'm asking:
My Project:
Personally, I haven't rendered a model that I created myself in 2 years and haven't learned character modelling. I'm actually part of a different scene: game design and modding.
An interesting development has been going on since John Carmack (the creator of Doom and the Quake games) released the source code of Quake I & II to the public. Now there are a few engines out there that rival the technologies of today's top game companies.
These engines offer features such as:
3000+ poly models,
Normal & Bump mapping,
1024*1024 and above texture sizes
and a lot of other stuff.
Specifically the engines that can do all these features are Tenebrae 2 (http://www.tenebrae2.com) and DarkPlaces (http://icculus.org/twilight/darkplaces) which are modifications of Quake 1 (released in 1996 for DOS).
DarkPlaces (http://icculus.org/twilight/darkplaces) has the added feature of full dynamic lighting(lighting with shadows - like Doom 3).
These engines have such advanced features that they need a whole other level of skills in coding, character, level and game design. Sadly, not a lot of the people still working with Quake 1 have these skills since they are used to modelling 300 poly models, a bit of scripting and a bit of 2d art design. The result is that nobody has created anything that is good enough for these engines (except fora few test levels by the Tenbrae 2 team and 1 image of a concept level from a DarkPlaces user). No areas with amazing architecture and soft lighting, no high poly characters with facial animation, no cinematic effects like depth-of-field, nothing.
I'm trying to help change the situation by bringing together a group of people who are interested in games and want to develop something new and different. You will have the opportunity to develop for a technology that will impose less artistic restraints than current game technologies and will provide new challenges. One is that game characters have to be created both in high poly(30000+) and low poly(3000+) versions and that the high poly version should have the same uv coordinates as the low poly version. Curious? Find info on Doom 3 here (http://www.doom3world.org/phpbb2/index.php) or look at these pics:
Example of a level designed for Tenebrae 2:

I hope this is as exciting to you as what is being shown and discussed here was to me when I first saw it :)

WOW..That Dark Places AND Tenebrae stuff look pretty awesome. I've never messed with Quake editing (only Unreal stuff) but this looks pretty good.
I just may have to do some more researching on this:cool: Thanks for the heads up:thumbsup:

@mashkos: tell us which model you'ld like to use and i guess we'll find a way :)

Neox:
I don't have anything in particular yet but I was asking because some of the high poly models have nice geometric detail and the characters (especially tahoro) have a look that can go with Quake's gothic / post-apocalyptic theme.
I'm thinking up an idea for a mod that will show off the features of DarkPlaces while at the same time having some sort of playability value. A mod with a short story and some dialogue / cut scenes.
I don't want to mess up or end up discontinuing the project so I won't rush things.
If you have any suggestions for something you would have liked to see in a game you played recently (if you play games :p) I'm all ears.

Glad you find this cool
I set up a site which might help you out:
3D models for DarkPlaces & Tenebrea (http://mashakos.50megs.com/q1mdls.html)
Hope this helps!
well taharo is the only case with boundaries in unsabilty by others... a part of the right of tharo will go to stenarts so a comic with him as a maincharacter can be produced...
oh wow! Thanks for your generosity. Am learning, so this will be excellent for me.

just saw this, (sorta new)
In looking at the file, how do you know who created what file in the zip download, looking at the download page, it just states that the meshes were created by two diffrent people, but there is no text file saying who created what.
I.E. Who did each of the files

As a gift to it's users, CGTalk has made 20 more free character models available in multiple formats. 3dsMax users that were having importing problems with .3ds meshes can now rest assure the new .max format will open flawlessly as these models where built and tested in 3dsMax 5.0. As a note to TrueSpace users, you can now partake in the fun with specially formatted .cob files. Hope everyone can find some great uses for them.
a listing of the formats, a link to this thread and

the files with kioku_ in front of the name are made by kioku the rest is done by me...
it should be clear that the models are only free for non commercial use, the copyrights are by me and benjamin (kioku) if you want to use them in your projects for earning money you need to get the permission or the rights to do so...
the copyrights are here with us the use rights are there to be sold :p

How is it that this should be clear, when it states Hope everyone can find some great uses for them.
Guess what I'm trying to say, is that copyright is automatic, when you create something it's automatacly copyrighted, but when you give it away for everyone to use with no restrictions posted, how are they suposed to know what the restrictions are.
ok i thought that this has no need to be said because they are free for learning (as once said befor)... thanks to leonard for adding the disclaimer, now everyone should know that these Models are only for Non-Comercial Use :)

I'd like to use slightly modified versions of these models in a free open source game. I assume this is fine since it's not for commercial use, but what about distribution. Can we distribute these models with our game or do they have to download them from the official website ? I have no problem including a readme giving you credit, an official link, and any license information you want me to include.
Thanks,
